Chapter 61 - UA University's Entrance Exam: The Fist of a Hero (2)

["GRASS-CUTTING SWORD!!"]

["METAL BLASTER!"]

Izuku had summoned two of his personal arsenals, brandishing the sharp green sword in his right hand and the cybernetic metallic gun in his left...!

And then—

"Target acquired."

A swarm of faux villain robots approached him without a shred of hesitation—!

"I'LL KILL YOU!" one of them—the 1-pointer bot—announced its intention with faux glee!

"Hmm... so they programmed these things to act like villains too, huh."

The 1-pointer bot rushed toward Izuku with its revved-up monowheel, then pulled back one of its massive metallic 'arms' to strike him—!

"And... they're also very predictable too."

When the robot tried to punch Izuku's head clean off, he easily dodged the massive metal haymaker with a simple sidestep—! Before then—

SLASH—!

He counterattacked with another simple yet clean slash of his sword arsenal—! The robot was cleanly bisected from its torso, falling down into a lifeless heap of scrap metal.

"That's a one point," Izuku muttered nonchalantly, setting his sights on the incoming swarm of robots—!

"YOU'RE DEAD—!"

"SHOULDN'T HAVE MESSED WITH US—!"

"...What a cheesy villainous dialogue."

Multitudes of the 1-pointer bots voiced their hostility toward Izuku as they charged toward him, acting as if they were about to avenge their fallen brother...!

But—

SLASH—! SLASH—!

Izuku went past the two monowheel bots charging at him, along with another clean two swings of his grass-cutting sword—!

CRASH—!

And soon enough, the two 1-pointer bots had joined their "brother" in the lifeless metal heap of failure and disappointment.

"Another two one-pointers... that makes it three points for me, right?"

But before he could confirm the result of his conquest—

CLANG—CLANG—CLANG—!

"Target acquired."

A sudden tremor rumbled across the cracked road...!

"...No hesitation built into them, huh."

The next faux villain bot had already charged toward him—!

A two-pointer bot skittered forward! A grotesque fusion of scorpion and machine, its metallic claw-legs clanking against the pavement…!

Its long, segmented tail raised high, ending in a hollow stinger that clicked open—!

SHUNK—!

The actual 'stinger' of the scorpion came out from its hollow-point tail! The sharp harpoon-like metal gleamed dangerously beneath the noon sun...!

"I'LL SHANK YOU!" it screeched in faux glee similar to its 'brother', and then... it lunged toward Izuku—!

But he simply sidestepped—!

STAB—!

—and let the sharp stinger plant itself on the ground! Missing Izuku by merely a few centimeters...!

"A bit too slow, honestly."

However, the scorpion machine did not give up! It quickly retracted its stinger out from the ground... before it then lashed back at Izuku once more—!

But again, Izuku simply sidestepped them.

STAB—! STAB—! STAB—!

He kept dodging the deadly stinger by a hair's breadth, with minimum effort no less. No matter how much the robot scorpion tried, it could never harm the examinee before it...

And eventually—

STAB—!

The large stinger once more missed Izuku, barely grazing him, but then—

"Enough of that."

SLASH—!

—He slashed the grounded stinger off from its base!

The robot scorpion panicked and scrambled away after losing its stinger, but—

"It was a nice try though."

He pulled his left arm up and quickly pulled the trigger—

BANG—!

A precise shot launched from the barrel, landing straight between the scorpion-bot's glowing eyes—!

BOOM—!

Its head exploded—! Then its whole body convulsed, crumpling into a smoking heap.

"That's two points for me."

But there was no time to rest.

CLUNK—! CLUNK—! CLUNK—!

"Target acquired."

Another bot had already entered the fray—this one bigger… bulkier…!

A large tank-like behemoth robot, stomping forward like a gorilla, with each of its shoulders mounted with missile pods...!

"A three-pointer, huh," Izuku raised his eyebrow in interest.

"PREPARE FOR A WORLD OF PAIN!"

The gorilla-tank roared in digitized rage, then charged with wheels spinning, ready to bulldoze through him—!

But Izuku dashed forward towards it! No hesitation on him, not even a flinch against the behemoth that was ready to crush him...!

However—

"Let's test your armor."

—as soon as he was about to crash against the gorilla-tank... he leapt up—!

He soared just above the beast's head, twisting in mid-air—

SLASH—SLASH—!

He struck once—twice—then flipped back and fired mid-air—!

BANG—! BANG—! BANG—!

Multiple blast shots peppered the bot's thick metal hide!

And as soon as the large tank robot passed Izuku, it skidded on its wheels!

Then—

BOOM—!

A burst of flame erupted from its chest. The machine staggered, then fell over, its wheels spinning helplessly.

"Three points acquired~."

But he wasn't done.

Another wave approached—

One-pointers with machine guns, rattling their barrels—

Two-pointers with charged stingers glowing red—

And in the back, three-pointers locking in their missile targets.

"Target locked."

"Hmm... already giving up on close-range combat?"

Izuku watched with cool detachment as the lineup of faux villain bots readied their personal arsenal...!

And eventually...

"FIRING—!"

All of them unleashed hell—!

Gunfire—! Missiles—! Even spears—!

The sky lit up with smoke trails and red tracers—all aimed toward the lone figure of Izuku...!

But Izuku himself…?

He weaved through them like water—!

Sliding, flipping, twirling between the chaos with ease…!

Not a single scratch… not a speck of dirt marred his green jersey.

"...Time to end this!"

He then rushed toward the swarm of faux villain robots, his own arsenals brandished in both hands—

SLASH—BANG—BOOM—!

And one by one, the bots fell! He slashed through the thick of them, blasting them away with each devastating blow...! None of the bots stood a chance, as their own counterattack had yet to grace the green-haired examinee.

Their twisted metal wreckage soon littered the streets, steam and smoke rising from their cores...

And finally—

CLANG—! CLANG—!

The last bot dropped, cleaved clean through from the middle...!

Izuku stood still for a moment.

His breath steady. His hands lowering his weapons.

He glanced around at the destruction… then counted under his breath.

"...Thirty-five points... I think? Would that be enough? Hmm..."

Izuku pondered for a moment. He wondered if he should try to hunt more of these bots or if the points that he'd gained were more than enough as a passing score...

But then... someone finally reached him.

A gust of wind swept the smoke aside… revealing a blur of blue and white rushing into the scene.

SLIDE—!

With sharp control, the bespectacled examinee skidded to a halt, his stance readied upon witnessing the first sign of the faux villain robots—

"—!"

But... all he found was carnage...!

"W-what...?!"

The twisted remains of robots were scattered like broken toys...! Many of them were cut into pieces, as if they had gone through a shredder, and many of them were riddled with gunfire...!

It was as if a war had swept through this part of the exam site's faux urban jungle...!

"How in the world...?"

He was confused; bewildered even. He didn't expect this many robots to have already been destroyed in what could've been a short amount of time.

And yet, the one standing right in the middle of it—

"Wait, is that... h-him...?!"

His breath hitched at the sight of the man...!

The nonchalant green-haired man.

The guy that he'd scolded before for his seemingly lackluster ambition.

"...Impossible…" he muttered in disbelief.

But the scene of carnage had spoken for itself, and the green-haired man was the only one standing in it.

After all, Izuku was the one that had rushed past him and everyone else with a head start...

Which solidified his presence even more as someone that he shouldn't have underestimated...!

But then—the bespectacled man noticed the glint under the bright daylight.

Two glints, in fact.

His gaze dropped lower... and found the two arsenals that the green-haired man was holding on to.

The green sword and a metallic gun...!

"—! Wait... aren't those—!?"

He then marched forward; voice raised with authority...!

"You—! What is the meaning of this?!"

"Hmm...? Oh, it's you. Yo~," Izuku waved cheerfully with his sword hand, "what's up?"

"Do not play dumb with me!" the bespectacled man snapped, then pointed toward the two arsenals in Izuku's hands. "Are those weapons?!"

Izuku blinked, surprised by the sudden question.

"...Huh? Yeah, they are."

"That's outrageous!" he barked back in disbelief. "To wield something so dangerous for the exam! It is entirely unbecoming of an aspiring hero!"

Izuku gave a short shrug.

"Don't see a rule that says I can't bring gear to help me pass."

"Support items are only allowed when relevant to one's quirk!" he snapped, eyes fierce behind his glasses, before he pointed an accusatory finger. "So, please kindly elaborate—what kind of quirk justifies a sharp blade and a firearm?!"

"Eh...?"

Izuku tilted his head in mild confusion, somewhat taken aback by how serious the man before him was. He pondered for a moment about what to say back to the bespectacled enforcer before him.

But then... his pondering slowly turned into a sly smirk.

"...Sorry. That's a secret."

The bespectacled man froze, greatly taken aback himself by Izuku's refusal to answer. But, with a vein throbbed on his forehead—!

"Why you—!"

"Hey, now. Relax, will you?" Izuku cut him off, gesturing toward something behind the frustrated bespectacled man. "You sure you want to waste your time on me? You might wanna focus on yourself first."

"...Huh?"

And lo and behold, the distant sounds of rushing footsteps...!

The crowd was catching up...!

"Unless you wanna spend this whole exam lecturing me while everyone else steals your points?"

"Tch…!"

The bespectacled examinee clenched his teeth, frustrated. But Izuku was right—he could not waste any more time, especially with this many faux villain bots already destroyed by the source of his irritation.

Then... he quickly spun around and bolted off without another word, gears whirring at his calves!

Izuku... exhaled lazily.

"...Man. Uptight much?"

And not long after, more footsteps echoed in... before gasps filled the air as examinees came pouring into the zone, only to be met with the demolished scene...!

"...Wha—!?!"

"What the hell happened here?!"

"Did someone already clean this area?!"

Izuku, still standing at the center, smiled faintly, but both arsenals had already vanished from his person.

He'd realized it would've been a hassle if this many people saw him brandishing weapons during the exam, considering how the bespectacled guy had reacted.

So... not wanting the same headache twice, he tucked his hands into his pockets and turned away from the gawking crowd.

Though... the crowd had already moved past wondering who caused the destruction... as panic settled in!

Frenzy overtook their awe, and soon, everyone was dashing past him, desperate not to fall behind...!

"Move, move!"

"Go west! I still hear some bots!"

Izuku simply chuckled at the sight of panicking examinees rushing past, feeling glad he didn't have to scramble for points like the rest.

However, amid the crowd, a familiar voice caught his ear—

"Hah—! There's still more ahead!"

He glanced just in time to spot a familiar brunette girl pushing forward through the crowd.

"Oh, that's Uraraka-san."

"A-ah! M-Midoriya-kun—?!"

She too noticed him, but... she couldn't stop herself—she was also in need of points, just like the rest of their fellow rivals...

But... Izuku gave her a quick thumbs-up.

"Good luck, Uraraka-san~!" he called out cheerfully.

"E-eh?"

She blinked at him mid-run—startled—but smiled back with a small tint of blush on her cheeks.

"...Thanks!"

And then—she was gone with the crowd.

Izuku watched as the examinees dispersed to every corner of the exam site, searching for more still-active robot villains to beat.

Though while his smile lingered... he couldn't help but wonder, and somewhat worry about something, which was...

The threat of the 4th faux villain.

"...Looks like I still need to stay on my toes."

And so... he followed slowly after his fellow examinees... with a sliver of hope that things wouldn't spiral into chaos too soon.
