The office was quiet, as usual, but something was different about Katherine today.
She sat at her desk, her fingers lightly resting on her keyboard, her screen displaying the same blank document that had been open for over ten minutes. Her eyes, unfocused and distant, remained glued to the center of the screen, but her thoughts were miles away.
Nathan's voice echoed in her head like a question left hanging in an empty room.
"How come we don't have a dad?"
It hadn't just been a question—it was the beginning of something. The beginning of awareness, of understanding. It was the kind of question children only asked once they'd started noticing the differences between themselves and others.
And for so long, she had done everything to keep them from asking it.
