Chapter 23 - The Day the Walls Came Down

The next morning began with a sound nobody had ever heard inside Moonbean Café before.

BANG!

Ren nearly dropped his coffee.

BANG!

Lina sat upright instantly.

"The café is under attack!"

"It is not."

"The walls disagree."

Outside, workers carrying lumber and tools filled the street.

Hugo stood at the center of the chaos like a general preparing for war.

The old carpenter held a rolled blueprint in one hand and a mug of coffee in the other.

He looked completely unstoppable.

"Coffee boy!"

Ren walked outside.

"Please stop calling me that."

"No."

"Fair enough."

Hugo pointed toward the café.

"We start today."

Several workers nodded.

The old carpenter then took another sip of coffee.

"Hm."

"What?"

"Still good."

Ren smiled.

Coming from Hugo, that was practically a five-star review.

Unfortunately—

Construction meant Moonbean Café could not operate normally.

The realization devastated half the town.

One merchant looked close to tears.

"What do you mean half the dining area is closed?"

"Construction."

"But where will I drink my coffee?"

"At one of the remaining tables."

"But I like that table."

The merchant pointed dramatically.

Unfortunately, his favorite table currently had a carpenter standing on it.

"That seems difficult."

The merchant sighed heavily.

"This is the darkest day in town history."

Lina nodded.

"I agree."

"You still have coffee."

"That's not the point."

Inside the café, workers began removing furniture from the rear section.

Tables disappeared.

Chairs vanished.

Decorations were carefully relocated.

The place already looked strange.

Fina stood near the counter watching everything.

Her eyes followed every movement.

"Is it okay?" she asked quietly.

Ren smiled.

"It'll look better afterward."

The little girl nodded.

Still—

She looked worried.

Moonbean Café was her home now.

Seeing it dismantled probably felt unsettling.

Theo noticed too.

The musician crouched beside her.

"Have you ever seen a caterpillar?"

Fina blinked.

"A caterpillar?"

Theo nodded.

"It wraps itself up."

"Okay."

"Then everything changes."

Fina tilted her head.

"And?"

"And eventually it becomes something better."

Lina pointed dramatically.

"That was surprisingly wise."

Theo looked offended.

"I can be wise."

"You play music for a living."

"Those aren't related."

"They feel related."

Around noon—

The first wall came down.

Or more specifically—

The first section of wall.

The sound echoed throughout the building.

Dust floated through sunlight.

Wood cracked.

Workers moved quickly.

Customers immediately gathered to watch.

Because apparently construction was entertainment now.

Mira even brought a notebook.

"Why are you taking notes?"

"History."

"History?"

"This is the Moonbean Expansion Arc."

Ren stared.

"You named it?"

"Obviously."

As the day continued, the true size of the project became visible.

The rear wall opened into an empty lot behind the café.

Ren had never paid much attention to the area before.

Now he realized how much space existed.

Enough for:

Additional tables

A larger kitchen

Storage rooms

A dedicated stage for Theo

Maybe even more.

The possibilities felt exciting.

Then—

A familiar system notification appeared.

[Expansion Progress: 10%]

New Future Features Detected

Private Meeting Room

Outdoor Seating Area

Premium Customer Services

Ren blinked.

"...Outdoor seating?"

"What?" Lina asked instantly.

"Nothing."

Everyone groaned.

Even Hugo.

"One day somebody's gonna find out what you're hiding."

"Probably."

Later that afternoon, Hugo gathered everyone near the construction area.

The old carpenter unrolled a large blueprint.

"Listen up."

The café immediately became quiet.

Mostly because Hugo sounded like he could bench-press buildings.

The blueprint revealed the future Moonbean Café.

The room grew silent.

Even Lina stopped talking.

The new design looked incredible.

The dining area nearly doubled in size.

Large windows would allow more sunlight.

Theo's stage would occupy a comfortable corner near the front.

The kitchen would become significantly larger.

Additional storage rooms would prevent future overcrowding.

And near the back—

A small garden courtyard.

Ren stared.

"...A garden?"

Hugo grunted.

"Customers like pretty things."

The carpenter pointed toward the blueprint.

"Tables outside."

Another point.

"Flowers."

Another point.

"Shade."

Then he looked directly at Ren.

"Coffee tastes better in gardens."

Several customers immediately nodded.

Apparently that was common knowledge.

That evening, construction finally stopped for the day.

Workers packed their tools.

The street became quiet again.

Moonbean Café looked strange now.

Half-finished.

Messy.

Incomplete.

Yet somehow—

Promising.

The familiar group gathered around the remaining tables.

Coffee cups steamed gently beneath lantern light.

Everyone looked tired.

Even Lina.

Which felt historically significant.

Theo glanced toward the construction area.

"It's weird."

Ren nodded.

"Yeah."

"The café feels smaller."

"That's because half of it is missing."

"I know."

Theo smiled.

"But somehow it also feels bigger."

The group fell silent.

Because they understood exactly what he meant.

The dream was growing.

What started as one man's wish for a peaceful coffee shop was becoming something much larger.

Not because of money.

Not because of fame.

But because people believed in it.

People wanted it to succeed.

People wanted to be part of it.

Fina looked toward the unfinished café and smiled softly.

"It's going to be beautiful."

Ren followed her gaze.

Broken walls.

Stacks of lumber.

Construction dust.

An unfinished dream.

And somehow—

He could already see the future.

A larger café.

More laughter.

More music.

More memories.

A place where even more people could find comfort.

Outside, the stars slowly appeared above the town.

Inside the half-finished Moonbean Café—

The dream continued to grow.
