BENEDETTI SOON SAW a car coming down the street and stopped in front of him. The driver, frightened by seeing him with a revolver in his hand, ended up stopping in fear, thinking it was a robbery. Clooney and he pulled Martin into the back seat of the car and both got in wherever they could, to escape.
— Go, go, go! — Benedetti shouted angrily.
Two armed men appeared near the sidewalk, shooting in his direction. With a sudden acceleration, the poor driver sped off in the direction he could go, following a curving path on the street.
Even without strength, Martin remained with the roll of papers firmly in his hand. Those documents were worth the lives of his friend and so many others, as well as the farewell to his past that imprisoned him for so many years. To let them go would mean that he had lived all that in vain.
