Chapter 35 - Nobles

Turning back to the gathered officials, she spoke with an air of authority. "We must thoroughly investigate the breach caused by the Bonebeard mercenaries entering our territory. We must take decisive measures to prevent similar armies from encroaching upon our realm again."

Lady Brynna's expression was resolute as she responded, "I'll assemble our intelligence network, Your Majesty. We will uncover the details swiftly."

Queen Calista's eyes narrowed once more, her voice cold and commanding. "Further, we will establish stricter regulations governing the mercenaries operating within our borders." Her conviction resonated in the room, a promise of safety for her people.

The grand doors of the council chamber swung open with a resonant creak, and Queen Calista stepped into the expansive room, exuding an air of regal authority. Her piercing blue eyes, reminiscent of the summer sky, surveyed the assembly with a discerning gaze, acknowledging the presence of her trusted advisers seated around the imposing table. The council chamber was a masterpiece of architecture, with its high, vaulted ceiling adorned with intricate frescoes that depicted the storied history of the realm in vibrant hues, intertwining the past with the present.

At the center of this majestic room stood a long table with a surface crafted from a single slab of rich, dark wood that gleamed under the soft glow of chandeliers hanging above. The table was a work of art with complex carvings, and the golden lion showcased strength and nobility. Behind the table lay a magnificent throne.

The throne was upholstered in lush, crimson velvet that caught the eye, inviting yet formidable, while the arms were lavishly adorned with gleaming silver wood that glinted in the faint light.

Flanking the throne were rows of high-backed chairs, each representing the noble houses of the kingdom, their emblems emblazoned on the rich fabric. The seats were filled with the closest advisers, their faces reflecting a mix of anxiety and resolve as they awaited her words.

To the Queen's right sat the Chancellor, Lord Menas, his expression stern and focused, the lines on his forehead etched as he absorbed the gravity of the unfolding situation. Beside him, General Stodge exuded confidence born from years of military service, his posture straight and attentive, ready to respond to the challenges ahead. The Treasurer, Lord Kreel, completed this trinity, his sharp eyes flicking around the room, constantly calculating the implications of their discussions.

To the Queen's left, the Guildmaster, Aria, leaned forward, her hands clasped in front of her, a portrait of quiet determination. Lady Brynna sat with a quill poised over the parchment, ready to diligently record every significant detail of the meeting.

At the far end of the chamber, a large map of the realm was propped on an easel, its once vibrant colors now muted by the weight of despair marking the territories affected by the recent turmoil. Strategic plans, laden with urgency, sprawled across a nearby table, their edges held down by silver paperweights shaped like royal seals, symbols of authority and command.

As the heavy wooden doors creaked closed behind the final attendee, Queen Calista gracefully took her place at the head of the grand oak table. The advisers were keenly attuned to the moment.

Her expression was grave, the weight of her responsibilities evident as she prepared to address the gathered officials.

"Gentlemen," she began, her voice steady yet filled with the gravity of the situation, "the unprovoked attack on the Sanctuary has wrought devastating consequences upon our people. Our foremost priority now is to lead the charge in rebuilding and ensuring the safety of those entrusted to our care."

General Stodge hardened his face further, his brow furrowing. "Our military response was inadequate; the mercenaries caught us completely off guard, exploiting our moment of vulnerability."

Lord Menas nodded solemnly, his voice low and serious. "The people demand justice, Your Majesty. We must hold the mercenaries accountable for this heinous act."

Lord Kreel furrowed his brow, the weight of recent events heavy on his shoulders. "The attack has severely disrupted our vital trade routes and commerce," he said, his tone laced with concern.

With unwavering resolve, Queen Calista rang out like a clarion call. "Rebuilding the Sanctuary is our foremost priority. We must learn from our past failures and construct a fortress." Her eyes gleamed with determination, reflecting her commitment to her people.

Aria, a passionate advocate for the artisans of the realm, spoke up, her voice infused with enthusiasm. "The artisans are eager to contribute, Your Majesty. We possess the skills and materials necessary for a robust rebuilding effort." She glanced around, gauging the support of those present.

General Stodge, the trusted military advisor, interjected, his voice a blend of urgency and authority. "Your Majesty, I strongly advise reinforcing the walls. Higher and thicker walls are essential to prevent breaches like the one we so painfully suffered." His expression conveyed the seriousness of the matter.

Aria nodded in agreement, her mind racing with ideas. "I propose a completely redesigned wall system, Your Majesty. Raising the height from 20 feet to 30 feet and thickening the walls from 5 feet to 10 feet. Additionally, we should reinforce the gates with iron cladding and implement double layers for added security."

Lord Kreel interjected, his tone cautious. "However, the added expenses will significantly strain our treasury, Your Majesty." He looked around, concern etched on his face.

Yet her resolve remained unshaken. "We will allocate the necessary funds. Our safety is paramount, and we shall not compromise that."

Aria smiled reassuringly, "Rest assured. We shall preserve the former essence while seamlessly incorporating modern security features. The modifications will enhance its safety and functionality."

Queen Calista narrowed her eyes, her mind sharp and focused. "I require comprehensive rebuilding plans detailing security enhancements and strategies for economic recovery," she demanded, her vision for the future solidifying.

With a deep breath, Lord Kreel cleared his throat, the room falling silent as he prepared to address the financial implications of their ambitious reconstruction plans. "Your Majesty, the costs associated with the restoration will undoubtedly put a significant strain upon our treasury," he reported solemnly. "We allocate 30% of our annual budget solely for this endeavor."

Queen Calista, concern etching her features. "What are the exact figures, Treasurer?"

"An estimated cost of 100,000 gold pieces, Your Majesty," he replied, his voice steady but laced with apprehension.

General Stodge, unwavering in his commitment to security, spoke up decisively. "The increased security measures are well worth the expense, Your Majesty. We cannot afford to overlook the safety of our people."

Aria added passionately, "The artisans are prepared to work tirelessly to ensure the project is completed on time, Your Majesty."

Lady Brynna considered the situation carefully, then inquired, "What measures can we implement to replenish the treasury and support this vital project?" Her query hung in the air, urging the council to consider the means to secure their future.

Lord Kreel proposed with a calculating glint, "Perhaps we should consider levying temporary taxes on luxury goods or raising our trade tariffs to boost our coffers." His tone suggested a keen understanding of the economic landscape.

In contrast, Lord Menas interjected with caution, "While revenue generation is undeniably important, we must remain vigilant in balancing it with the economic well-being of our people. Their welfare should not be sacrificed for monetary gains."
