Chapter 19 - 18. The Reality Check

The air felt lighter that morning. Ruby moved through the staff corridor of the Ocean Odyssey with something close to relief settling into her chest. Not confidence, not yet, but the suffocating grip of shame had finally loosened.

The cultural showcase had been a success. The video, a carefully crafted celebration of Taiwanese heritage, had gone live overnight. Positive comments streamed in: praise from guests, reposts by influencers, and a rare, diplomatic nod of approval from Mr. Wen himself.

Carla had found her in the staff break room, clapped a hand on her shoulder, and said with a quiet smile:

~ Carla: "You pulled it off, Walker. Nice work."

It wasn't fanfare. It wasn't flowers. But it meant the world.

Ruby had returned to her cabin and sat still for a full minute, just breathing. Not panicking. Not second-guessing. Just breathing. For the first time in weeks, she felt like she might belong here. That she wasn't just surviving but maybe, finally, earning her place.

She was halfway down the corridor toward the crew lounge, already thinking of her next idea: maybe something on Caribbean folklore; when a voice cracked through the hallway like a whip.

~ Evander: "Walker. In my office. Now."

Ruby froze. Her stomach flipped. She turned slowly to see Evander standing near the staff elevator, arms crossed, eyes unreadable. Not furious. Not pleased. Just flat.

~ Ruby: "Captain?"

~ Evander: "I don't repeat myself."

Ruby stood stiffly near the door, her hands folded behind her back. Evander didn't look up from his tablet for a solid ten seconds. The silence twisted itself into a noose.

Finally, he spoke.

~ Evander: "I saw the video."

Her heart leapt.

~ Evander: "You did your job."

The words landed like a slap. Ruby blinked.

~ Ruby: "I… I'm sorry?"

~ Evander: "You cleaned up your mess. You didn't do anything exceptional. You simply mitigated the fallout from your own incompetence."

He stood and stepped around his desk, setting the tablet down with calm precision.

~ Evander: "You embarrassed this ship, Miss Walker. You insulted one of our most important donors. You endangered our reputation in two international markets. And now, because you did what was necessary to stop the bleeding, you expect what, praise?"

~ Ruby: "No, sir. I just..."

~ Evander: "You are still here because Mr. Wen believes firing a young woman after she publicly apologized would look bad for him. Not for me. If this decision had been mine alone, you would be packing your things already."

Ruby's breath hitched. Her throat burned, but she held her ground.

~ Evander: "You're not here because you earned another chance. You're here because you were granted one. Don't confuse the two."

His gaze didn't waver.

~ Evander: "You have one job now, Miss Walker: do not make me regret tolerating your presence."

She nodded, her voice barely above a whisper.

~ Ruby: "Understood."

~ Evander: "That's all."

In the hallway, she didn't cry. Not yet. Not there. But inside, something collapsed. That fragile thread of hope, of maybe, finally, turning things around, snapped under the weight of his words.

She had survived. But she hadn't been forgiven

The corridor outside Evander Langston's office was sterile and silent. She stood motionless, the weight of his words pressing down on her. The brief flicker of pride she'd felt earlier was extinguished, replaced by a familiar knot of self-doubt.

She turned and walked, each step heavy, her surroundings a blur. The vibrant posters she'd once admired now seemed mocking. The cheerful chatter of guests felt distant, as if from another world.

In her cabin, she closed the door and leaned against it, the cool metal grounding her. She slid down to the floor, knees drawn to her chest, and let the tears come. Silent, but relentless.

Memories of her efforts flooded her mind: the meticulous planning, the emotional toll. All seemingly dismissed with a few cold words.

But amidst the despair, a spark ignited. A quiet, defiant voice whispered: "You are more than one mistake."

She wiped her tears, stood up, and faced the mirror. Her reflection showed red eyes and a weary expression, but also determination.

"I will not let this define me." she whispered.

The road ahead would be challenging, but she was ready to walk it on her terms.

She grabbed her phone and hit Natalie's name.

~ Natalie: "Ruby?" jer sister's voice was warm, always soft around the edges.

Ruby broke the silence with a sharp inhale, and then it all spilled out.

~ Ruby: "He humiliated me. Again."

~ Natalie: "The Captain?"

~ Ruby: "Yes! I worked my ass off to fix everything. I made that video, I planned every detail, I stayed up night after night trying to make sure I didn't screw it up again. And when it actually worked, when guests were happy, when Mr. Wen said it was good, Evander called me in just to tell me I was barely doing what I was supposed to."

She could hear the anger in her own voice now, louder than the pain.

~ Ruby: "He looked at me like I was still some clueless intern. Like nothing I did mattered. Like the only reason I'm still here is because it was convenient politically. Like I'm a liability."

Natalie was quiet, listening in that way she always did, letting Ruby unravel.

~ Natalie: "That's not fair. You didn't just fix it, Ruby. You did more than most people would've even tried to."

~ Ruby: "Yeah, well, tell that to Mr. Ice Cube in a suit. God, Nat, I know I messed up at first. I know. But I owned it. I did everything they asked and then some."

She ran a hand through her red hair, breathing hard.

~ Ruby: "I thought I was starting to prove something to them, to myself. But it's like none of it counts. Like I'll never be good enough for someone like him."

~ Natalie: "You don't need to be good enough for him. You already are good enough, Rubes. You made a mistake and then you handled it with more guts than half the people I work with would've."

~ Ruby: "Then why does it still feel like I failed? Why does it feel like I'm just waiting to get shoved out the airlock?"

~ Natalie: "Because he's not the one who gets to decide your worth. You've come too far to let one asshole with a power complex make you forget that."

There was a pause. She wiped at her eyes.

~ Ruby: "I just… I don't want to go through it again. The quitting. The crashing. The feeling like I don't belong anywhere."

~ Natalie: "Then don't. Stay. But not for him. Stay because you've earned this. You're stronger than he thinks and I think, deep down, you know that too."

Ruby took a long breath. The rage had dulled, leaving something else in its wake. Resolve. Steady. Quiet. But real.

~ Ruby: "Yeah. I do."
