Such occurrences often happen within the genetic fabric of a species, just as human societies occasionally have individuals who are extremely tall, a result of genetic mutations that break the constraints of their original genetic coding. Of course, such natural genetic mutations don't bestow superpowers like those seen in science fiction movies.
