Lucian nearly collapsed from exhaustion. He'd saved the lives of nearly a hundred people now, single-handedly.
And yet, there were still so many others who were either dead or dying.
I'm only one man, he thought miserably. There's only so much I can do.
They were out of the sewers now, at least. But Lucian was still nauseous from the stench, and it seemed to follow him around everywhere he went.
And it was even worse here, near the Iron Gate.
Lucian saw the creature's carcass, sprawled across the ruined plaza mid-crawl. Its blackened limbs stretched down alleys and streets, tangled in lamp posts and broken carts.
Its stomach was torn open from where Kael had made his escape. Guts like melted tar spilled across the cobblestones.
People were already tearing into its flesh.
They didn't care what it had been or where it had come from. All they saw was meat. A way to fill their empty stomachs after so many years of starvation. Maybe even a lifetime of it.
