Chapter 87 - Chapter 86: The Embers of Rebellion

Smoke still billowed in serpentine tendrils above the ruins of Belthar-9. Ash fell like a dark rain, cloaking the fledgling greenery in a ghostly veil. Mayu and Subject 45 stood motionless on a cliff's edge overlooking the valley, taking in the apocalyptic silhouette with new gravity. Around them, dawn painted the sky in orange hues—the promise of a day to rebuild.

> "It's over," Mayu murmured, her voice thick with emotion.

Subject 45 did not answer at once. He joined her at the precipice and placed a hand on her shoulder.

> "For now, yes. But we've only cleared a path. The real trial begins now."

She turned to him, intrigued.

> "What trial?"

He gazed into the horizon.

> "The Rebellion. Human clans, clones, villages, refugees… they must unite—and I am not sure everyone will welcome this freedom."

Mayu drew a deep breath, clutching her coat's edges.

> "Then we must show them the power of our alliance. Prove that humans and clones can coexist."

He nodded, admiring her boldness.

> "We head to the Silver City. It's where the first uprisings erupted—where the scout bands still hold out."

She squared her shoulders.

> "Lead the way."

---

They descended into the valley by a narrow, rubble-strewn path. Figures lurked amid the wreckage: former Organization soldiers, villagers wielding sharpened stakes, exhausted clones. Some nodded, others remained wary.

Lia and Seth—who had rejoined them—waited beside an improvised transport convoy: battered trucks and sleds pulled by exoskeletons. Behind them, wounded clones climbed aboard under the watch of scant volunteers.

> "Everything's ready," Seth announced. "We depart in ten minutes."

Mayu exchanged a glance with Lia, who offered a reassuring smile despite the tension in her eyes.

> "We will make it," Lia whispered.

> "We have no choice," Mayu replied.

She climbed into one of the vehicles, followed by 45, Lia, Seth, and the clone delegates. Engines roared into the dawn, and the convoy rolled out.

---

The journey took hours. The machines chugged up uneven slopes. Mayu watched the terrain blur: charred forests, sediment-choked streams, skeletons of drones and armored vehicles littering the land. Each ascent felt heavier on her shoulders.

Seth sidled closer, uncertain.

> "Mayu… I'm sorry. For what happened at Belthar. For everything."

She turned, surprised.

> "You have nothing to apologize for. I survived because of all of you."

He nodded, still uneasy.

> "I want you to know that."

The convoy at last reached open ground. Before them lay the Silver City: a maze of silver domes and rusted towers, the remnants of a grand reconstruction project left to rot. Makeshift barricades ringed the city—guarded by militia armed with sonic lances and vintage rifles.

The vehicles halted at the entrance. A solemn hush fell.

Mayu, 45, Lia, and Seth disembarked. The clone delegates formed a unified front behind them.

> "We come in peace," Mayu announced, voice ringing out.

A thousand eyes fixed on her—curious, skeptical.

A man clad in titanium armor and bearing the emblem of a raised fist stepped forward, holding an electrified staff.

> "Who are you to dare enter here?" he demanded.

Mayu inhaled.

> "I am Mayu, bearer of the Resonance. This is Subject 45, Lia, and Seth. We liberated Belthar-9. We bring a choice: forge an alliance or live in fear."

Bitter laughter rippled through the crowd, and several militiamen raised their weapons.

> "Promises, always promises!" snarled a scarred veteran. "You're nothing but chimera!"

Mayu stepped forward unharmed by their hostility. Her azure eyes pierced the assembly.

> "You may doubt. You may fear. But I offer a treaty: we pool our strength to eradicate the Organization. Then each community retains autonomy—no single dominion. A pact of equals."

The militia leader narrowed his eyes.

> "Why should we believe you?"

Subject 45 advanced, voice steady.

> "Because we awakened thousands of coded minds. We carry the freedom code. Who better than us knows how precious life is?"

Silence fell. Murmurs rippled. Then an elderly fighter, cane in hand, shuffled forward.

> "I am Irfan. Having survived the city's fall, I have seen horrors. If you are who you claim, show us. Grant us the Resonance key, and we will follow you."

Mayu nodded.

> "Tonight, I will lead you to the Central Source. There you will witness the strength of our awakened souls."

A swell of approval rose among the crowd.

The militia leader lowered his staff.

> "Very well, bearer of Azure. You will have your chance."

Mayu turned to her allies.

> "Prepare yourselves. The road will be long, and danger awaits. But this alliance… it is our greatest weapon."

Lia placed a hand on her shoulder.

> "Together."

Seth agreed.

And as the sun climbed higher, the new coalition marched toward its destiny, determined to reignite the flame of freedom in a world of ash.
