"Use Bounce!"
Silas certainly wouldn't choose to go head-to-head against Ponyta in a direct clash.
It wasn't that couldn't win, but there was simply no need for it.
Ponyta was indeed fast on the ground, but it had a major flaw it couldn't fly.
As Ponyta rapidly approached,Combusken followed its Trainer's command.
Bending its legs slightly, Combusken suddenly leaped into the air.
Though it couldn't yet match its evolved form, Blaziken, which could easily jump over a 30-story building, Combusken could still leap high at least the height of a dozen floors.
While airborne, Combusken took a moment to gather strength, using the feathers on its head and its body's natural balance to stabilize itself as it targeted the moving Ponyta below.
As a Pokémon with some degree of aerial maneuverability, Combusken found it completely reasonable to adjust its position mid-air.
Ponyta, meanwhile, was caught in a moment of confusion after its Stomp attack had failed.
"Then we'll use Bounce as well!" Celeb voice was full of confidence as he gave his command.
Ponyta immediately kicked off the ground with all four hooves and jumped.
Silas gave his opponent a strange look. Was this guy being serious?
If Ponyta had used Flamethrower or something to chip away at Combusken's stamina, that would've been understandable but using Bounce?
Sure, Ponyta successfully used Bounce and leaped into the air. Compared to other Ponyta, its jump height was indeed impressive.
But when compared to Combusken, it was like a high school athlete trying to out-jump an Olympic champion.
And unlike Combusken, Ponyta had no way to control its body in mid-air after executing Bounce. The moment it reached its peak height, it started falling straight back down, nearly in the same spot.
By this time, Combusken had already positioned itself directly above Ponyta.
With a slight shift in its body, Combusken used Bounce and struck Ponyta's abdomen with a powerful kick, sending it flying before it crashed onto the ground.
Silas's voice followed immediately.
"Chase it down with Double Kick!"
"Get up, use Stomp!"
Celeb refused to back down.
Bam! Bam!
Combusken's long legs, wrapped in Fighting-type energy, clashed fiercely with Ponyta's front hooves, producing a deep, resounding impact.
Both Pokémon were knocked backward.
However, Combusken quickly regained its footing, while Ponyta was still struggling to stabilize itself.
"Rock Slide!" Silas commanded.
"What?!" Celeb was caught off guard.
On the battlefield, Combusken, now fully recovered, lifted a large boulder and hurled it at Ponyta.
"Dodge it, Ponyta!"
Celeb was now feeling desperate. For Ponyta, a Rock-type move like Rock Slide was devastatingly effective.
Ponyta barely managed to steady itself. The moment it looked up, all it saw was a massive boulder crashing down toward it.
Its Trainer's voice echoed in its ears.
What can I do? I'm desperate too… A trace of helplessness flashed in Ponyta's eyes.
But it had no choice. The boulder smashed against its body.
"Heeeyahhh!!"
Ponyta let out a pained, agonized cry.
It was still just a child…
Silas raised an eyebrow. Oh? This Ponyta was surprisingly resilient—it hadn't gone down yet.
"Keep using Rock Slide."
"If you're not down yet, then I'll just keep hitting you until you are. It's that simple."
With that, Combusken raised a large boulder and hurled it toward the Ponyta that had collapsed on the ground.
"Hee-yah~"
Ponyta let out a shrill whinny, lifting its proud head high. Then…
"Boom!"
With the sound of the rock slamming into it, Ponyta promptly lost consciousness and fainted, no longer able to battle.
"Ponyta is unable to battle! Combusken is the winner!"
"All three of Celeb's Pokémon are unable to battle. The winner of this match is Silas Alaric from Pewter Gym!"
As the referee raised the flag to signal the outcome and announced the result, a wave of cheers and applause rolled in from the sidelines.
It was a celebration for the outstanding performance both trainers had just delivered.
Silas recalled his Combusken, walked off the battlefield, and extended his hand toward Celeb for a handshake, nodding to show his respect.
"Next time, I'll win."
Celeb said abruptly, without context.
Silas was momentarily stunned, then smiled and replied, "It'll still be me winning."
The two exchanged a brief chuckle, walking side by side toward Nurse Joy.
Behind them, the announcer's voice continued to echo:
"Audience members, please wait ten minutes while the battlefield is repaired.
Up next, would the trainers from Cerulean Gym and Saffron Gym Reggie and Hayato please begin your preparations!"
Silas handed his two Pokémon to Nurse Joy and, after a brief conversation with Celeb, returned to the stadium seating.
Celeb, knowing exactly what Silas was about to do, didn't try to prolong the talk. Instead, he ended it smoothly.
The winner of the next match between Reggie and Hayato would become Silas' opponent in the final there was no way he could miss observing their battle.
Otherwise, his Pokémon's techniques and strategies would be exposed while he knew nothing about his future opponent. That kind of information gap could be fatal in a match.
Just like what had happened between him and Celeb neither side had revealed much in their previous battles, and both lacked sufficient knowledge of each other's capabilities.
As a result, both trainers made various misjudgments during the battle.
But because Silas was strong enough, those mistakes had less impact on him, which made Celeb appear thoroughly overwhelmed.
If their strength had been more evenly matched, the mistakes Silas made during the battle could've easily been decisive.
During the rest period, Silas quickly closed his eyes, replaying the last battle in his mind and reviewing the issues with his commands.
"First issue: Combusken shouldn't have used Fire Blast at close range against Poliwhirl. It would've been better to use Flamethrower instead.
Fire Blast takes too long to charge, which gave the opponent ample time to use Rain Dance. Without that, Combusken would've been in much better shape afterward.
While Flamethrower has lower power, at that distance, it could've been fired twice more total damage and faster execution.
If all went well, it might've even interrupted Rain Dance.
Second issue: The strength of Low Kick still isn't quite enough. Honestly, if Poliwhirl hadn't lost balance more than expected, Combusken wouldn't have been able to knock it over. I need to have it learn a stronger kicking move, like Take Down Kick, as a backup.
Third issue: I should've switched in Pidgeot against Pelipper immediately. I wasted too much time probing, which let Combusken's stamina drain during the rain. If I had conserved its energy, it would've handled the battle against Ponyta far more efficiently.
Fourth issue: Pidgeot didn't need to use Aerial Ace. Air Slash would've been better for back-to-back hits. Aerial Ace just dragged out the tempo.
Fifth issue: Or even if Aerial Ace was fine, I shouldn't have relied on Air Slash afterward. I should've taken the opportunity when the opponent was caught in Whirlpool to close in and fight at close range.
Otherwise, Aerial Ace didn't serve any purpose.
Using Air Slash just gave the opponent the chance to charge Hyper Beam. If Pidgeot hadn't used Substitute at the last second, I might've had to bring out Roggenrola.
