Silas casually seared the synthesized meat patty in a pan. When it was about seventy percent cooked, he plated it, adding a bit of black pepper and chili.
In this life, he had developed a particular love for spicy food no matter what he ate, he liked to add a touch of heat.
He took a bite and nodded in satisfaction. With forty years of single life combined across two lifetimes, if there was one thing Silas was good at, it was cooking.
After finishing his meal, he glanced at the time. Nearly an hour had passed. That was more than enough time for his Pidgeot to have flown over 2,000 kilometers. This Arbok really was hard to find.
Just as he was thinking about it, a familiar cry rang out above him. "Piiidge!"
Looking up, Silas instinctively squinted—midday sunlight was harsh.
A black shadow swooped down swiftly, kicking up clouds of dust as it landed.
Without needing any orders, the meal-sated Roggenrola promptly began to control and settle the dust in the air.
Pidgeot's powerful chest muscles rose and fell slightly. For it, this was just a slightly more cautious version of its usual warm-up routine. It wasn't even carrying anything pretty light work, really.
Still, it was lunchtime, and it was a bit hungry.
Holding the pre-prepared lunch, Silas walked over and placed it beside Pidgeot.
Pidgeot began eating immediately as Silas gently combed through its slightly disheveled feathers, the result of long-distance flight.
Now that he thought about it, he and Pidgeot had been living together for nearly two years. He sighed softly.
Before he knew it, it had grown so much. The evolution of Pokémon really was something magical.
Once Pidgeot finished its lunch, Silas put aside the matter of Arbok for now. He had Combusken incinerate his paper lunch plate until not even ashes remained.
He also rinsed the Pokémon's utensils and the frying pan in a nearby stream, then had Combusken use its flames to sterilize everything.
Fire-type Pokémon essential in any kitchen!
Add in a Water-type and a Grass-type, and you've got the whole package.
Water-types for water supply, Grass-types for food ingredients, and Fire-types for cooking.
Silas wore a peculiar expression as the thought crossed his mind. Could that be how the three starter types were chosen?
He shook his head to dismiss such a ridiculous idea. Still, the foodie genes from his past life were embedded too deeply no matter where he went, he couldn't forget the importance of a good meal.
After tidying up everything, with all three Pokémon recovered and in top shape, he finally turned to Pidgeot to ask about the Arbok situation.
"Pidge, pidgeo," Pidgeot began to recount its story, and Silas finally understood what it had been up to for the past hour.
Pidgeot's: (POV)
I am Pidgeot, ruler of the skies. No chubby, yellow, or green creature can match my speed.
Today's mission from the Trainer was to find an Arbok.
Hah! That's easy piece of cake. Just a little snake, right? I can catch that thing with one talon.
Anyway, I've been flying for a while now, and I still haven't seen a single snake.
Come on, it's summer! Don't these little youngsters want to come out and get some exercise? It's good for your health, you know!
Still nothing around here either. Hello? Any snakes down there? If you're there, please respond, thank you.
Oh hey, there you are, little bro. Wanna hang out?
What's that? You're busy licking another Arbok? Seriously? You broke little snake, stop that it's not going to work. And she's not even good-looking!
Why are you mad now? Don't spit at me! I'll smack you, I swear.
Of course, all of that was just Pidgeot's internal monologue. What Silas actually heard was a simplified version: Pidgeot had spent over half an hour circling in the air nearby before finally spotting an Arbok.
However, that Arbok happened to be with a female Ekans. Pidgeot, being Pidgeot, had taunted them from the sky, which explained why it came back so late.
Before flying off again, Pidgeot even sent both of the snakes a parting Air Slash each.
Silas gave a slight nod. One Arbok and one Ekans shouldn't be a problem.
After confirming that Pidgeot had clearly seen the location of their nest, and receiving a confident yes in reply, he stood in place and started thinking.
He fully believed Pidgeot's claim about the taunting. He knew just how much of a loudmouth and troublemaker his Pidgeot was it had practically been the bad influence that corrupted Combusken.
Taking a look around the terrain, Silas quickly came up with a plan.
He first headed in the direction Pidgeot had mentioned.
Then, he had Roggenrola dig several pits of varying depths in that direction, placing a few Sand Tomb traps beside them and carefully covering everything up.
At the same time, he instructed Pidgeot to draw aggro and lure the two snakes toward the traps.
He, Roggenrola, and Combusken took cover above a massive boulder nearby, keeping themselves well hidden.
Pidgeot lit up at the task it loved doing this kind of thing. With a strong flap of its wings, it swiftly flew back to where it had found the Arbok.
There, it began taunting the Arbok and Ekans in Pokémon-speak. The two quickly lost their temper. Even though they couldn't fly, they started chasing after Pidgeot from the ground in a rage.
Pidgeot deliberately slowed its speed, continuously provoking them while occasionally using Gust and Whirlwind to throw obstacles in their path.
The pain from the attacks only fueled Arbok's fury further. Already a fight-to-the-death type, it now had its full attention locked onto Pidgeot.
As the three Pokémon neared the trap zone, Silas gave a subtle signal to Roggenrola and Combusken to get ready.
"Boom!" The massive Arbok and the smaller Ekans both fell into the first trap pit.
Silas gestured for his Pokémon not to attack just yet.
Sure enough, Arbok, with its brute strength and powerful body, was the first to climb out. Blinded by rage, it unleashed Acid Spray and Poison Sting at Pidgeot nonstop, completely ignoring the female Ekans still struggling in the pit behind it.
"Boom!" Another loud crash.
Arbok fell into a second, even larger pit.
Silas waved his hand, and Roggenrola immediately activated Gravity, pinning Arbok and Ekans to the bottom of the pit so they couldn't climb out.
Combusken took the opportunity to unleash Flamethrower and Fire Blast alternately, while Pidgeot joined in with Air Slash after Air Slash, slicing into the two snakes with practiced precision.
It was practically a replay of the previous battle quick and efficient. The Arbok and Ekans soon lost the will to fight.
Silas tossed out two Poké Balls. This time, neither of them even resisted; they were both captured without a hitch.
Letting out a deep breath, Silas thought, This should complete the mission, right? Judging by the Arbok's skin, it looked like it had just shed a freshly molted specimen.
Fortunately, this area had no known Spearow flocks or Fearow territories. Otherwise, Pidgeot wouldn't have been able to act so freely and recklessly.
He had Pidgeot lead the way to Arbok's nest, silently praying that they wouldn't have to search again. He wasn't sure he could endure another two-hour snake hunt. At this rate, they'd barely make it back in time for dinner.
Surely, his luck wasn't that bad… right?
