Chapter 18 - dark aura

The boys made their way back to their dormitory rooms, the evening air cool against their skin, a welcome contrast to the lingering heat of the day's training. They carried their simple dinners—a meager fare of bread and stew—with them, the routine a comforting anchor in the wake of the day's intense experiences. The soft evening breeze rustled the leaves overhead as they walked silently, each lost in their own thoughts, their bodies aching from the strain of training, their minds buzzing with new knowledge and the subtle, lingering sensation of their awakened essence. Yet, even exhaustion couldn't entirely erase the intensity of the day's lessons. The simple act of eating, a mundane routine, felt charged with a newfound significance.

After eating quickly and washing off the day's sweat and grime, the exhaustion took over most of them like a heavy fog. Asher and Ethan, their bodies weary but their spirits surprisingly high, lay down on their beds, their eyes shutting almost immediately as the comfort of rest claimed them. Their breathing deepened, rhythmic and slow—proof of a body and mind finally allowed to relax, the tension of the day finally released.

Everyone, that is, except Nick.

His eyes lay wide open in the darkened room, the moonlight streaming faintly through the curtains casting pale stripes across his restless face. His mind, far from resting, was a whirlwind of frustration and a burning determination. Thoughts circled endlessly around one searing fact: Ethan was surpassing him. The ease with which Ethan had moved his essence, the effortless flow of his aura—it was a stark contrast to his own struggles, a painful reminder of his perceived shortcomings. Nick refused to accept defeat, to admit that another, seemingly less experienced, student could surpass him. Pride, ambition, and a deep-seated competitive spirit fueled his restless energy.

Pushing aside the fatigue that begged him to surrender, Nick slid out of bed and sat cross-legged on the floor, his movements precise and controlled, a physical manifestation of his mental discipline. In the quiet stillness of the night, he focused every fiber of his being inward, his entire attention turned to the subtle energies within himself. His hands rested lightly on his knees as his breath slowed, becoming steady and deep, each inhale and exhale a carefully measured act of control. For the first time since their training, the room was silent except for the soft rhythm of his breathing, a quiet symphony of determination.

Slowly, almost imperceptibly at first, the faint glow of white light began to shimmer just beneath the surface of his skin, a subtle luminescence that gradually intensified. It was a faint at first, then growing stronger, a visible manifestation of the energy he was channeling. A bright white aura, shimmering and pulsing with inner light, circulated visibly around his body like a halo of pure energy, a radiant testament to his unwavering focus.

The glow, however faint, was enough to disturb the fragile peace in the adjacent rooms. Both Asher and Ethan stirred awake, blinking into the darkness, their curiosity immediately piqued. The sudden appearance of light in the otherwise dark room was intriguing and unexpected.

"What's he doing?" Asher whispered, rubbing the sleep from his eyes, his voice a low murmur that betrayed his surprise.

"I don't know," Ethan murmured, his voice equally soft. Then, noticing the faint glow emanating from Nick's body, a sudden understanding dawned on him. "Wait, is he practicing his essence circulation again? He's actually doing it, and it's showing."

Meanwhile, Nick's focus was absolute. He had reached a trance-like state where the world outside blurred, its distractions fading into insignificance, and the only thing that existed was the flow of essence within him. He could *see* it—his essence moving like a shimmering river through every corner of his body, lighting up his limbs and torso with an ethereal glow, a visual representation of the energy that flowed within him. It was a mesmerizing spectacle, a testament to his intense concentration.

A surge of competitive spirit, fueled by a mixture of admiration and rivalry, ignited in Asher. He swung his legs over the side of his bed, planting his feet firmly on the ground, and moved quietly into the room beside Nick's, his movements careful and deliberate. Watching his friend, his usually restless energy now channeled into a focused determination, he felt a spark of inspiration ignite within him, a renewed desire to push his own limits.

"If Nick can do it... maybe I can too," Asher thought determinedly, a renewed focus settling over him. He was not just observing; he was actively engaging in the process.

He settled into a similar meditative position beside Nick, his posture mirroring his friend's, his breathing mirroring his rhythm. He closed his eyes, and began to search inward, his mind seeking that elusive essence. At first, the essence refused to cooperate, remaining stubbornly elusive. But strangely, something was different this time. The atmosphere, charged with Nick's focused energy, seemed to amplify his own efforts.

Asher thought to himself, *Is it because I'm near Nick? Or maybe because I'm in the same focused state?* Whatever the reason, his essence began to respond. The warmth he'd struggled to find earlier, the elusive energy that had evaded his grasp, blossomed easily within him, a vibrant response to his newfound determination. He felt it flow freely for the first time, coiling and winding its way throughout his body, no longer a hesitant flicker but a steady, powerful current.

His breathing deepened, becoming more controlled, more rhythmic, a reflection of the growing strength and stability of his essence. Within minutes, Asher's effort was rewarded: a steady red aura, pulsating with vibrant energy, now pulsed and glowed softly around him, a fiery ember circling in harmony with his heartbeat, a clear indication of his mastery over his essence.

Like Nick, absorbed in the intensity of his internal work, Asher had no awareness of the world outside his trance – his eyes closed, his body relaxed, his mind narrowed to the flow of his essence, his consciousness completely immersed in the experience.

Ethan, awakened by the faint glows emanating from both Nick and Asher's bodies, decided not to be left behind. Though he had been ahead earlier in the day, seeing the auras surrounding his friends, a visible testament to their progress, stirred a fresh wave of resolve inside him, a competitive spirit pushing him beyond his initial exhaustion.

He sat up, his movements deliberate, his mind already focused, and began again, pushing his body to keep circulating his essence despite the weariness weighing on him. He wasn't merely competing; he was striving for mastery.

Minutes turned into what felt like hours. Ethan lost count of how many times he moved his essence around his body, his focus unwavering. His breaths were shallow at first but grew deeper, more controlled, as he fought to maintain focus, his determination fueled by the intensity of his friends' efforts.

And then, on his twentieth full circulation, something extraordinary happened. A vivid purple aura, shimmering with electric energy, blossomed around him, swirling with vibrant light. As the glow intensified, a darker, shadowy aura, a stark contrast to the vibrant purple, layered itself beneath, writhing like smoke entwined with light, a mysterious counterpoint to the vibrant energy.

If Nick and Asher had been watching closely, they would have seen the two distinct energies—purple and dark—twisting and dividing themselves around Ethan's form like twin serpents dancing in perfect balance, a mesmerizing display of raw power.

Ethan's face was calm but intensely focused, his eyes closed in deep concentration. Sweat beaded on his brow, a testament to the effort, but he remained steadfast, his determination unwavering.

The room seemed to pulse with energy, the air thick with the weight of untapped power awakening in the three boys, a potent combination of energy and ambition. The quiet intensity of the night was broken only by the rhythmic pulse of their auras, a silent testament to their burgeoning magical strength.
