The first statue marked the beginning of the unraveling.
Three young Awakened were trying to open the gate, get a chance to gain the fourth ring, and perhaps learn more about the torched shield.
Well, at least two of them did.

Leon's fist slammed into the statue as he screamed in pain again.
"Damn it! I thought it would work this time!"
Alisa jerked her head in his direction. "Kain... Tell me honestly. Is your ally an idiot?"
"Hah," Kain chuckled. "You say that because he failed. If the statue or the gate had collapsed at his blow, you'd be calling him a genius."
"You may be right, but that's... more if." Alisa stared at Leon running around. "That's a theoretical situation, in reality, he's an idiot."
"Agh."
Kain looked up.
"And? How many artifacts do we need? I only have this."
He showed his dagger, the amulet was hidden in an inner pocket. He hadn't used it in the third chamber, so Alisa had no way of knowing that.
