I stepped off Sheila's porch and took a deep breath, letting the cool air fill my lungs. That talk went better than I thought, and I got way more out of it than I expected. But damn, Sheila really knows how to keep it together, at least to an extent. Still, no one can say she's not a family woman. But hey, vamp blood, here I come.

I stepped away from the parking lot and into the clearing. This place felt like a maze. Pre-crossover, I hadn't come to any of the other gatherings here, and it didn't help that the paths twisted around a lot. At least the string lights made it easier to find my way.

Then the smell of cheap booze hit me. Yeah, this was definitely the right spot.

When I finally came out of the clearing, I saw the crowd near the bonfire, people dancing, drinking, doing all kinds of other degenerate things.

I made my way over to the table. The beer was probably shit, but I still wanted a drink.

I stepped up to the stand, hand reaching for a bottle when a familiar voice cut through the hum of chatter.

"Mal! Hey, you made it!"

I took a slow sip, the cold beer hitting my throat before I turned around with a slight smile.

"You do know my name's Malcolm, right?"

Bonnie grinned like she'd been waiting for the moment."Yeah, but we're friends, right?"

I let out a dry chuckle."Friends, acquaintances by circumstances, and best care bearer."

She cocked her head, amused."Okay, okay. I get it. Doesn't mean we can't start somewhere."

I shrugged."Sure, but to give you fair warning, I'm not exactly a social bird."

She shrugged back, like it was a challenge."Well, that's gonna be my job to change."

"Whatever floats your boat."

"I don't think I'll have much trouble."

"Is that so?" I raised an eyebrow.

"Well, yeah. I don't know what it is, but you seem way more lively than before. Did something happen to kill that brooding routine you had going?"

I rolled my eyes, mentally smirking. Sure as shit, your grams must be working some useful witchcraft on me.

"First, I don't brood. I just don't show it. Second, not really. Maybe it's just the atmosphere."

She didn't miss a beat."Hey, since I'm officially your designated first friend, you should totally join the football team."

I nearly choked on my drink."Excuse me, football?"

"Yeah, you definitely got the build for it. And Caroline's redoing cheer tryouts this year. Wouldn't it be great if we both made the team?"

I shook my head, half amused."Sure."

This is definitely not how I thought tonight would go, I thought. Not mad though. It could get interesting, might even bring her magic into play sooner than expected.

Then, out of the corner of my eye, I caught Vicki and Matt slipping into the woods. I glanced at Bonnie.

"Uh, I gotta take care of something. I'll catch up later."

I started moving deeper into the trees, keeping a steady distance behind them.

"Hey, wait-" Bonnie called after me. "But I don't have your"

Her words cut off as I vanished between the tree lines. I'll get her number later.

I stayed in the tree line, out of sight.

Vicki's voice cut through first.

"No, Ty. I'm not having sex against a tree."

Tyler laughed. "Come on, it would be hot."

"For who? No. It's not going to happen. Not here, not like this. No. I said no. I said no! Ow, that hurts!"

God, hurry the fuck up.

"Hey, leave her alone," Jeremy said, stepping in.

Tyler turned on him. "You're starting to get on my nerves, Gilbert."

"Just go, Tyler. Get the hell away from me," Vicki snapped.

Tyler stared at her, then let out a bitter laugh. "Wow. Vicki Donovan says no. That's a first."
