Chapter 57 - Return to camp

The sun hung low in the sky, casting long golden shadows across the terrain as we limped toward the clearing where our original camp had once stood. My boots dragged through the dirt, my legs nearly giving out from exhaustion. Every breath felt like a small battle. I didn't know what I was expecting—maybe an empty site, maybe a skeleton crew left behind to keep the fire burning.

But when we broke through the last of the brush, I stopped in my tracks.

"Whoa," Elena whispered beside me, just as stunned.

My jaw fell open.
