065: Ash Reverse Attribute Wins! !
"Vine Whip, huh? I've been waiting for that one," Ash said, his expression calm but confident as he watched Bellsprout's vines snap through the air. Instead of looking surprised, he appeared pleased as if he had anticipated this move all along.
"Froakie, defend with Bubble Mousse!" Ash commanded firmly.
"Quack !" Froakie croaked in acknowledgment, nodding sharply.
After several rounds of intense battles and having built a silent rapport with this destined partner, Ash and Froakie were already showing signs of natural synergy a trainer and Pokémon moving in tandem.
As Ash's command rang out, Froakie instantly processed the instruction and sprang into action.
Swish~ Bellsprout's dual vines lashed out like whips, slicing the air with precision and force. They streaked toward Froakie in two green arcs.
But Froakie didn't try to dodge. Instead of creating a full-scale bubble shield as he had in previous matches, this time, he took a different approach forming two compact orbs of Bubble Mousse in his palms like miniature bucklers.
When the Vine Whip struck, Froakie instinctively lifted both arms, intercepting the whips with his bubble-coated hands.
Puff…! The impact was subdued. The vines hit the bubble-covered bucklers like whips striking a sack of cotton, dampening the force and deadening the sound. The previously sharp whip-cracks became soft thuds.
"What?!" Xunzi gasped, eyes wide with disbelief.
But Ash didn't give her a moment to react. Taking full advantage of the blocked attack, he immediately gave a follow-up command: "Froakie, coat the Vine Whip with Bubble Mousse! Paste it down!"
"Quack~!" Froakie replied sharply, catching on to the plan.
In a swift and fluid motion, Froakie transformed his two bubble bucklers—one hand gripping the slackened Vine Whip like a baseball mitt, while the other spread a thick layer of Bubble Mousse along the vine like greasing a rusted chain.
"Bellsprout, pull back! Retract the Vine Whip!" Xunzi called out quickly, alarmed and confused by the move.
Bellsprout, having regained composure, yanked on its vines with strength enhanced by Growth. Since Froakie wasn't physically stronger especially after Bellsprout's Attack and Sp. Atk boosts the whip slipped free from Froakie's grasp without much resistance.
But Ash didn't flinch. In fact, his smirk widened there was a trap in play.
Sure enough, in its rush to recover the vines, Bellsprout didn't realize the trap laid within the mousse. The moment the vines retracted, the sticky Bubble Mousse clung to its leaf-like arms and body.
"Hiss!!" Bellsprout cried out as the mousse latched on, creating resistance and tangling its limbs together.
"The range of Vine Whip is impressive, and Bellsprout's strategy to keep distance makes sense," Ash commented calmly. "But now... can it still use Vine Whip like that?"
Ash didn't wait for Xunzi to respond. He pressed the offensive.
"Froakie, close the gap go for melee! Use Pound, now!!"
"Quack——!" After staying still like a statue for most of the match, Froakie finally moved springing forward with explosive speed.
With a nimble hop, the blue ninja Pokémon leapt straight toward Bellsprout, covering the distance in a flash. The three-fingered hand, looking like it was gloved in white, glowed faintly as it charged the Pound move.
"Bellsprout, evade quick!!" Xunzi called out desperately.
But the stat-boosting Growth had enhanced Bellsprout's offensive stats—not its speed. In fact, with its body bulked up and limbs tangled in Bubble Mousse, dodging became far more difficult than before.
As Froakie's palm swung down with a glowing strike, the crowd held its breath Bellsprout was a sitting target.
At the same time, through Froakie's sharp, dynamic eyes, the movements of Bellsprout's dodging were clearly tracked.
"Bang!" Froakie's reaction speed was exceptional. As Bellsprout twisted to retreat, Froakie saw his opening and quickly dashed forward, his froggy paw slapping Bellsprout sharply across the face.
"Hiss!!" Bellsprout let out a sharp cry, clearly stunned by the blow. The strike threw off its balance, and it staggered before crashing to the ground in a heap.
"Froakie, don't let up, keep the pressure on!" Ash commanded firmly from the sidelines, his voice cutting through the tension.
Froakie, ever responsive to his trainer's commands, wasted no time. He kicked off the ground and leaped forward with fluid grace.
The two froggy paws slammed down left and right with rapid precision, like a series of powerful slaps, each one pushing Bellsprout further back.
Crack, crack, crack...
With each strike, Bellsprout's head whipped to the side, its already weak position deteriorating further with every hit. The relentless barrage continued, until finally, after four or five rapid Pound attacks, Bellsprout's head tilted at an awkward angle, and it collapsed to the ground, unable to continue the fight.
"Bellsprout!!" Xunzi gasped in disbelief, her hands instinctively covering her mouth. She watched in shock as her Pokémon, the one she had relied on so much, lay defeated on the ground.
The arena fell silent for a split second before the referee raised his hand and announced the result.
"Bellsprout is unable to battle! The winner of this match is Ash and his Froakie!" the referee declared loudly, his voice echoing across the field.
A murmur rippled through the onlookers.
"Oh my God, a Water-type Froakie just defeated a Grass-type Bellsprout? Even though their strength was close, the Water-type still pulled through."
"I honestly thought Xunzi and Bellsprout had the upper hand. I didn't think they'd lose."
"This Ash guy is strong he might be the best out of all of us," another student murmured, clearly impressed.
"He's unbelievable! After four matches in a row, to win all of them especially after a battle like that... I didn't expect Froakie to be so tough!"
Indeed, Ash's victory was causing a stir among the students, but it wasn't just the other campers who were stunned. Gary and the others, who had always believed in Ash but never fully recognized his potential, were also taken aback.
Earlier, they had been confident in Ash, mostly because they knew him as a friend, but seeing Xunzi's Bellsprout a Pokémon with a clear advantage in terms of type fail to defeat Ash, they couldn't help but rethink their stance.
"Wow, I didn't expect Ash to be this strong. This is his fourth match," Gary commented, wide-eyed.
"Four victories in a row... That's pretty incredible, isn't it?" Trevor added, shaking his head in amazement.
"But do you think he'll go for the fifth challenge?" Trevor asked, his curiosity piqued. "It's hard to imagine he'll keep going."
The group fell into a brief silence as they considered his question.
"Well… I guess it's possible, but…" Gary began hesitantly. "Froakie looks pretty winded. After all those fights, I think his stamina's running low."
"Yeah, I agree," another student chimed in. "Even with his strong will, Froakie looks exhausted. If he keeps fighting like this, he might lose due to fatigue."
Despite their confidence in Ash's abilities, the reality of Froakie's physical exhaustion seemed to be weighing on their minds. Even Gary, who had always been one of Ash's biggest supporters, wasn't sure whether Ash could continue this winning streak.
