Chapter 83 - Chapter 83: Through the Breach

The cracked remnants of the battlefield still smoldered beneath their boots. Vaelrick's final scream had not faded—it echoed unnaturally, as though the world refused to release it. Brent staggered upright, his armor flickering with golden and violet arcs. Rae moved to his side, one arm cradling her ribs, the other gripping her blade tightly. Lysa stood at the center of the ruined altar, her emberlight flaring from her open palms, trying to stabilize the rift Vaelrick had torn.

The Second Gate groaned open.

Not cleanly. Not like before. This was no calculated portal. It was ripped open, bleeding light and shadow in equal measure, writhing with an unstable fury. A wave of cold swept through, as if the void on the other side inhaled their presence.

Rae's eyes widened. "It's not just a gate—it's a wound."

Brent nodded grimly. "And something's already bleeding through."

From the shattered arch, forms emerged. Twisted beasts of broken time and forged flame—mutated by the Gate's chaos. Their eyes shimmered with Her mark, their shapes barely coherent. Massive centipede-wyrms coiled through, trailing molten shadow. Winged serpents of burning ice hissed between folds of twisted sky. One, taller than a fortress, crawled from the rift with too many limbs and a face Brent recognized—his own, mutilated.

Lysa's breath hitched. "They're… copies. Echoed nightmares of us."

Trial of the Reflected Flame: Initiated

Brent roared and charged first. His blade—reborn in the previous battle—shone brighter than ever. Ashfire and twilight laced every swing. Rae followed, unleashing Resonant Flares that curved and danced with impossible intelligence. Lysa's power spiraled upward, her Emberheart unleashing a wave of radiance that countered the creeping corruption.

The first echo fell—Brent's twisted doppelgänger exploded into shrieking shards of flame.

Another surged forward—this time a corrupted form of Rae, stitched together from old regrets and unused power. The three fought, backs together, every clash of steel and spell resounding like war drums.

The battle dragged on, minutes stretching into hours.

Then—they saw it.

Beyond the breach, through the blinding fracture of realms, a city floated among broken stars. Towering spires, draped in endless aurora, pulsed like a living organism.

The Cradle of Worlds.

Her prison.

And the source of the Nexus corruption.

As Brent drove his blade through the heart of the final Echo Beast, the Gate pulsed once more. A voice—Her voice—cut through the chaos.

"You have seen my prison. Now choose, Nexus-Bound. Break it… or seal it forever."

System Choice Unlocked:

Option A: Destroy the Cradle—unleash untold power, but risk multiversal collapse.

Option B: Seal the Cradle—contain Her essence, but remain bound to the Nexus.

Brent turned to Rae and Lysa. Bloodied. Burned. Unbroken.

He didn't answer immediately. Instead, they walked toward the breach—together.

Prepared to decide the fate of every world that still dared to dream.

The sky over the Ember Nexus fractured like glass. Thunderous light cascaded from the broken heavens, and the flame gate cracked open with a screaming roar that echoed through time itself. From its depths, Her influence began bleeding outward, warping reality and twisting what once was sacred.

Brent stood at the center, Unity Form still crackling around him, sword planted in the molten earth. Rae and Lysa flanked him, their Soul Cores blazing bright in defiance of the shadow rising from beyond the Gate.

"She's breaking through faster than expected," Rae said, sweat trailing down her temple.

"No," Lysa whispered. Her eyes shimmered with Emberlight. "She's accelerating time within the rift. She's trying to force evolution."

Before they could react, the Gate exploded.

From its core poured twisted, hybrid Echo Beasts—creatures forged from corrupted core fragments and raw emotional resonance. Some bore distorted reflections of people they had once known—old classmates, fallen enemies, even past versions of themselves.

Brent surged forward first, Twilight-Flame sword meeting the maw of a molten Echo Wyrm. Every strike burned with 100% Flame Resonance, each movement an extension of his perfected core. But the beasts were faster now—smarter.

"They're learning as they fight," he gritted.

Rae expanded her Celestial Bond, illuminating the battlefield with radiant energy. Her vision pulsed in fractals—the new ability she'd unlocked when confronting Her aura: Mirrored Time. It allowed her to reflect predictive echoes, disrupting enemy foresight.

Lysa, calm within the chaos, activated her Emberfield. But this time, the field pulsed with Sovereign Ember, a gift unlocked from the ancestral Flamekeepers. Her healing waves now fortified minds as well as bodies.

Their coordination turned the tide—until the world shuddered. From the cracked sky descended Vaelrick.

But not as a man.

As something worse.

His form now bore wings made of spectral ash, veins glowing with forbidden Nexus energy, and behind him floated the cloned Kalen, possessed by the remaining fragment of Her essence.

"You were always destined to be broken," Vaelrick roared, voice echoing from all directions. "But now you will serve—as vessels of the Nexus Singularity."

Brent growled and clashed blades with Vaelrick, each impact sending quakes through the burning field. Rae battled Kalen's clone, whose form shifted like shadowed flame, copying her attacks as fast as she could invent them.

Lysa stood between both fights, protecting the fallen and holding the resonance lines steady.

"We can't hold them off forever!" Rae shouted.

"We don't have to!" Brent shouted back. "We have to make a choice."

The Gate pulsed—once, twice.

Then a voice filled their minds.

Gate Entity Online.

Crisis Imminent.

Choice Required: Seal or Destroy the Nexus Core.

Warning: Destruction severs access to Cradle of Worlds. Sealing requires absolute synchronization.

Time slowed.

Brent turned to Rae and Lysa. "If we destroy it—we stop Her for good. But we lose everything beyond."

Rae met his gaze. "But if we seal it… we risk Her returning. And we still have to survive Vaelrick."

Lysa closed her eyes. Then opened them with clarity. "We seal it. Not for us—but for everyone after us. We fight not to escape, but to guard."

Brent's core ignited. Rae reached out. Lysa joined.

Unity Surge: MAXIMUM.

The battlefield vanished. Only the flame remained.

They channeled everything into the seal, their bond anchoring it.

And just as the Nexus stabilized—Vaelrick let out a scream that wasn't human. His body ripped apart into ash and chaos.

But Kalen's clone remained.

Silent.

Watching.

Then he smiled.

"She's still here. You just locked yourselves in with Her."

The chapter ends with the sealed Gate pulsing slowly, like a heartbeat in slumber.

And something knocking.
