Chapter 1 - Prologue

Rain fell gently on a small town in the Philippines. The afternoon sky was gray, as if joining in the grief of the woman lying weakly on a simple hospital bed. The faint, rhythmic beeping of medical equipment filled the silent room. Beside the bed, a twenty-year-old young man sat, holding his mother's hand tightly.

Daniel Calinao never liked hospitals. The scent of medicine always reminded him of a fear he could not explain. But that day, that fear felt much more real than ever before. He knew his mother did not have much time left.

"Ma, the doctor said you'll get better if you keep resting."

The woman smiled faintly. It was a smile that, for years, had been the place Daniel returned to whenever the world felt too heavy. Even though her body had grown frail and her face looked pale, her gaze still held the same warmth.

"Daniel..."

"Yes, Ma?"

"Forgive me."

Daniel shook his head quickly. He did not understand why his mother was apologizing. Throughout his life, she had worked day and night to raise him alone. Never once had Daniel felt a lack of love.

"Why are you saying that, Ma?"

The woman closed her eyes for a moment. Her breathing sounded heavy, as if every word required all the strength remaining in her body.

"There are many things I never told you."

Daniel fell silent. All this time, he had rarely asked about his family's past. Every time he asked about his father, his mother would only smile and change the subject.

Since he was a child, Daniel had been used to living without a father figure. He never knew the man's face, never knew his name, and did not even know if the man was still alive or not. All he knew was that his mother always looked sad whenever the topic came up.

"If it's about Dad, it's okay, Ma."

The woman shook her head slowly.

"It's not just about your father."

A frown appeared on Daniel's forehead. For the first time, a feeling of unease began to creep into his heart. There was something in his mother's tone that made him feel the secret about to be revealed was far greater than he had imagined.

"What do you mean, Ma?"

But the woman did not answer immediately. She only stared at the ceiling, her eyes beginning to glisten.

A few days later, his mother's condition deteriorated further.

The attending doctor could only shake his head slowly when Daniel asked for an explanation. The disease had spread too far. There was not much they could do other than keep the patient comfortable in her final days.

Daniel spent all his time at the hospital. He stopped working temporarily to take care of her. To him, nothing was more important than the woman who had sacrificed everything for him.

That night, the rain fell again.

The city lights were visible faintly from the hospital room window. Daniel had fallen asleep in a chair after nearly two days of not resting properly.

Meanwhile, the woman on the bed looked at her son with a gaze full of guilt.

"I'm sorry..."

Tears fell slowly from the corners of her eyes.

"I'm truly sorry, Daniel."

The next morning, Daniel's world changed forever.

A long, continuous sound from the heart monitor echoed in the room. Nurses ran in. The doctor tried various measures.

But it was too late.

Daniel could only stand frozen as someone covered his mother's body with a white sheet.

It was as if all the sounds in the world vanished in a single second.

No crying.

No screaming.

Only a void so vast it made his chest feel constricted.

The funeral was simple.

A few neighbors came to pay their last respects. His mother's old friends were also present, though not many.

Daniel stood before the grave without saying a word. He only stared at the newly placed headstone while clutching a white flower in his hand.

A light drizzle began to fall again.

Just like the day his mother passed away.

"I'll be okay, Ma."

But even he himself did not believe those words.

After everyone had left, a middle-aged woman approached Daniel.

She had short, graying hair and tired-looking eyes. Daniel recognized her as his mother's closest friend since youth.

"Auntie Rosa."

The woman smiled thinly.

"Your mother loved you very much."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"I know."

Auntie Rosa was silent for a moment before taking an old wooden box from her bag.

"There is something your mother entrusted to me."

Daniel looked at the box in confusion.

The box looked very old. Its corners were worn with age. On the top, there was a small flower carving that had nearly faded.

"Your mother asked me to give this to you after she was gone."

Daniel accepted the box carefully.

"What's inside?"

"I don't know."

Auntie Rosa stared at him for a long time.

"But I know the contents of that box will change your life."

That night, Daniel sat alone in his room.

The old box was right in front of him.

His hands felt cold as he slowly opened the rusted wooden latch. For some reason, his heart was beating much faster than usual.

Click.

The box opened.

Inside were several old letters, a necklace, and a photo that had begun to yellow.

Daniel picked up the photo first.

And when he saw the image printed there, his breath hitched.

In the photo was a young boy.

He was perhaps ten or eleven years old. His hair was silvery-white with dark roots. His eyes were sharp, yet held a strange loneliness.

Daniel had never seen this child before.

But there was something that felt familiar.

Very familiar.

As if he were looking at a reflection of himself in a different version.

His hands trembled as he turned the photo over.

On the back of the photo was handwriting he knew very well.

His mother's handwriting.

Tears began to fill his eyes as he read the line.

Because there was only one line of text.

One simple sentence that destroyed the entire world he had known until now.

"Your younger brother, Izana."

Daniel froze.

His eyes read the writing over and over again.

Hoping he had misread it.

Hoping it was just a bad joke.

But the writing remained the same.

"Your younger brother, Izana."

"My brother...?"

Daniel's voice was barely more than a whisper.

His mind felt empty.

For the twenty years of his life, he had always believed he was an only child. Never once had his mother mentioned the existence of any other siblings.

Then who was this child in the photo?

Who is Izana?

And why did his mother hide all of this until the end of her life?

With trembling hands, Daniel took the next letter.

In the corner of the envelope was a small inscription.

"For Daniel. Read this when you are ready to know the truth."

Tears fell again, uncontrollable.

For the first time since the funeral, Daniel cried.

Not just because he lost his mother.

But because he began to realize that the woman he loved most had taken a great secret to her grave.

And that secret had just opened a door to a past he never knew.

A past that would take him across the ocean.

To Japan.

To a boy named Kurokawa Izana.

And without Daniel realizing it, the journey to find his brother would change the destiny of many people forever.
