Mia could almost feel herself shaking when Mrs. Davies' disgust grew even thicker and Rey's hand tightened around her like a python ready to choke her to death, unaware of her lack of air.
Mr. Davies gave a slight cough and that was enough to break the tension. Mia felt a trickle of sweat down her back as she straightened.
"Get me the housekeeper." Mr. Davies gave Sabrina a slight nod and soon the housekeeper was in as if she had been waiting by the corner to be called upon.
"Take the couple to Rey's room." Mr. Davies ordered and Mrs. Davies glared.
"Do you mean they would share a room?" Mrs. Davies frowned at her husband, the discomfort in her voice loud to Mia's hearing. Rey didn't bother.
"Yes, they would." Mr. Davies responded without batting his lids and Mrs. Davies bit her inner cheeks before looking elsewhere as if the sight of Mia in her room would taint her eyes beyond repair.
"Come down for dinner with your fiancée later." Mr. Davies told Rey who nodded once before gently leading Mia out of the sitting room.
"Are you being serious now Dear? You're calling her his fiancée already?"
"Isn't that what she is?" Came his fading voice, Rey and Mia were far beyond hearing now.
"How do you feel?" The question startled Mia as Rey nodded to the housekeeper, a sign for her to leave as he opened the door to his room himself, inviting Mia in.
"I feel, uhhmm…fine?" She was nervous, she wasn't sure what she was supposed to say or the right response to his question as she subtly looked around his room.
"Feel free." He left her side and plunged down on the bed in seconds like he wasn't the one who had experienced an event that almost caused her a heart attack a few minutes ago.
She looked at the one side of the wall to see Rey's pictures hanging on it like trophies won. Looking back at the older Rey after seeing a younger Rey stare back at her from one of the pictures with smiley eyes, she sighed silently.
He had his hands over his eyes and he laid still as if in deep sleep. Not wanting to bother him and not knowing what else to do, she began pulling out the few accessories she had with her, arranging it on the empty side table, hoping she did forget them there as she did.
She opened one of the drawers out of curiosity and frowned a bit as a picture presented itself to her. At the back of her mind, she knew she should just look away or probably close the drawer but she didn't, she gingerly got hold of the picture and brought it closer to her face.
She stared at the picture of the younger looking Rey, this time he was smiling widely, his eyes had this relaxed and playful look in it while he held a familiar looking girl close to his side. She was laughing, her head was almost tipped backwards and Rey had his playful eyes trained on her.
She looked at the girl more closely and the memory zapped through her in a quick flash. She was the girl who met them at the restaurant. The lady she had excused Rey with.
Rey frowned against the flesh of his skin when he felt like the room had gone extremely quiet without Mia's careful shuffling. What was she up to?
He uncovered his eyes to look at the direction he had felt her presence. This time, she was sitting at the edge of the bed as if careful enough not to wake him up from his fake slumber.
What was she doing? He had questioned himself as he silently crept towards her.
When he was close enough to see what she held in her hands, his face slowly darkened before morphing fully into a thunderstorm. Without waiting to have one more thought, Rey snatched the picture from Mia's hand, startling her.
"What the fuck are you doing snooping around my things!?" Rey yelled at Mia, going blind to her tremble.
Mia felt her heart quake at her boss' cold anger. She was shaking now and all the tendrils of curiosity which had themselves curling around her mind had withered like they were never there.
Now she regretted her impulsive actions looking at Rey's blazing eyes. She could see a vein throbbing on his forehead and the apology on the tip of her tongue suddenly felt so feeble.
"Learn to mind your fuckin' business or I'll make sure you get a separate room and you know what that means? A failure at your fuckin' duty…" He hung the remaining words in the air, the threat she knew too well. It made her almost shed a tear.
She could not afford to fuck up now that Lucas was almost close to being saved. Once again, all the blooming feelings she had for Rey withered like some weak trees without roots.
"I'm sorry, I won't…" She had started but stopped when he just stood up and stormed out of the room.
Sagging on the bed like she had all her bones taken out of her, Mia had resolved to cry when the door creaked open again.
Her heart quaked.
What if it was Mrs. Davies who had hung around to see a crack and hold onto that to humiliate her before exposing whatever shady deal she had had with Rey?
What if it was Rey who had suddenly had a change of mind and decided to call it a quit because she went around snooping at his things?
Now, she could not afford to see who was behind the door. She placed her face on her palm, determined not to allow her emotions to show when she heard the soft voice.
"Hey?" She looked up to see Sabrina's soft eyes staring back at her.
