Chapter 21 - C-Rank Core!

Fenna checked rope ties. "I rigged a pulley. Slide down the outer wall, then Star can carry you across the outer ditch in glides. I'll come next."

Star flapped, lifted a meter, hovered. Zephyr's heart swelled.

Below, torchlight flooded greenhouse windows. Guild scouts entering the cellar hatch. Too late to second guess.

Zephyr stepped onto the rope, Star circling him. He kicked off. Rope hissed, and cold air bit his face. Halfway down the wall, Star seized his cloak collar with strong claws. Wings beat hard. The dragonling dragged him off the rope into free space.

They sailed over the academy ditch, just a ten meter glide but glorious. Star landed on the snowy outer path, Zephyr stumbling to knees, laughing breathless.

Fenna zipped next, starshine in her eyes. Together they hurried into the pine woods, Star hopping ahead.

Behind them, bells rang warning clamor. Zephyr didn't look back.

They trekked through moonlit trees until dawn tinged the sky pink. Guild search horns echoed distant now. A fresh path opened down into the Gloom Hollow valley, leading south toward ranges unnamed on academy maps.

Zephyr paused atop a ridge. Lowmoor academy's roofs were tiny behind fir boughs. Star perched on his shoulder, tail curling around his neck, gaze fixed on broad sky.

Fenna slipped a hand into his, warm despite the snow. "We are exiles now. We will Hunted."

He squeezed her fingers. "Not exiles but seekers. We will find a place where dragons are welcome. Where greed don't exist."

Star spread new wings, catching first sunlight. A faint purple shimmer trailed his wingtips.

The System chimed:

[Stage 2 complete. Safe sky exit achieved.

Blood‑line purity +3 % → 18 %

Host Reward: Dragon Sense radius extended to 50 m.

Next Objective (Stage 3):

Establish secure lair for growth.

Acquire beast core rank C or higher as evolution catalyst.

Time: 60 days.]

Zephyr breathed deep, crisp pine scented. "New goals," he said to himself. "New horizon."

He looked at Fenna, her hair windswept, eyes bright. At Star, small yet mighty. And beyond them, mountains scalloped the horizon, waiting.

"Let's keep going," he said.

Together they stepped into the wild, carrying a secret older than empires and the flame of a future which had only just begun.

The pine forest thinned as Zephyr, Fenna, and Star pressed south. Behind them, thread-thin smoke from Lowmoor academy's chimneys faded into the pale winter sky. Ahead, the land rolled into rugged foothills where snow gave way to patches of frosted grass and shattered granite.

Star flew short bursts now. He can glide fifteen to twenty meters before dropping onto Zephyr's shoulder. Each landing thumped a little heavier. The dragonling's molt had left him denser, muscles packed with new power. His wingspan now measured nearly forty centimeters, violet membrane humming with life.

"Careful, little scout," Zephyr chuckled as claws pricked through his cloak. "I'm not a tree branch."

Star chirped, unrepentant, and nuzzled Zephyr's ear. Fenna laughed, wind carrying her bright voice across the ridge. She pointed toward a river valley below. "Water and shelter. Perfect for a camp. For now let's camp here."

They descended a rocky path, boots crunching on brittle sedge. Star circled overhead, Tremor Sense pinging small critters scurrying under roots. Night shadows stretched when they reached the valley floor, and a half‑collapsed stone tower came into view. It had overgrown with moss and parasite trees leaning, but the walls were still intact on three sides.

"A watchtower from the border wars," Fenna said, examining moss bite mark carvings. "No fires here for decades."

Zephyr ran a hand over a cold stone. "It will serve as a lair."

The System chimed inside his mind showing approval:

[Objective A (Secure Lair) Location accepted.

Conditions: Weatherproof, hidden entrance, basic resources.]

They went to work immediately. Zephyr explained to her that they needed to make some changes.

Fenna collected willow branches and dried reed. Zephyr dismantled rotten beams for planks. Star Spark‑Dashed skyward to break dead limbs for kindling, returning with a triumphant trill each time. In the tower's dry corner they built a platform nest of straw, cloth scraps, and heat stones which was Star's new bed.

Zephyr filled cracks in the wall with mud and moss, then dragged a fallen door slab across the ground‑floor arch, wedging it tight. Fenna set smoke‑ward herbs to mask their scent, thornmint, sleep sage, and frost petal.

By moonrise a faint warmth filled the space. Star curled in the nest, puffing sparks that died in the cold air. Zephyr spread leaf blankets near the wall. Fenna rested beside him, shoulder against his. For a moment the world shrank to a circle of lamplight, the howl of wind buffered by stone.

"We did it," she murmured.

"First step." Zephyr tucked the moth eaten (found in the broken box) cloak tighter around her. Outside, snowflakes danced past the open slit of a window, but inside, safe heat hummed.

A few hours later, Sunlight slanted through the roof gap, waking Zephyr to the sight of Star balanced on the window ledge, batting at light dust motes. Fenna still slept, hair fanned over wool. Zephyr rose quietly, stepping outside.

The river cut a silver ribbon through the valley. To the east, slate ridges rose into the foothills proper. Somewhere beyond, Stage 3's second demand awaited. He needed to find a beast core, not just any, but C‑Rank or stronger.

He consulted the System asking for a clue. "Where can I find a beast core? Do you have any location? Help me a little."

The system chimed inside his mind showing clues. Ding! System Suggestions:

[Task: Acquire C‑Rank core.

Tips: Predator beasts in Stone Jaw Range hold crystallized cores in nests.

Warning: Host rank is low. Must employ stealth, allies, or traps.]
