Chapter 14 - Red Bloom

ABANDONED OBSERVATORY --- 08:08 EDT, OCTOBER 2

In the empty Observatory, screens flashed with red warning patterns. The AI system Jeevika appeared as a hologram over the central console.

[Multiple dangerous threats detected in Gotham, Metropolis, Star City, Paris, and Taipei,] she announced. [Pattern matches plant-based magical attacks.]

She paused briefly before activating emergency protocols.

[Deploying Arsenal and Sentinel. Starting Protocol: Weed Whacker.]

In his room, Roy Harper was already watching news feeds showing giant plants destroying cities. His communicator flashed with a red lotus icon---a warning signal he'd hoped never to see.

Two minutes later, Roy stood in the Observatory's weapons room with Sentinel (formerly known as Match), watching Raj's pre-recorded message.

"If you're watching this, it means the Injustice League has made their move," Raj's recording began with a slight smile. "Operation: Poison Garden is happening."

Raj explained each villain they would face:

Poison Ivy: Controls plants with her mind and can create deadly toxins that even Superman's immunity can't fully resist

Joker: Unpredictable and always carries hidden weapons, including his latest Joker Venom that works on a prion basis to bypass conventional filters

Count Vertigo: Creates dizziness in his victims using technology similar to what Star Labs developed for treating inner ear disorders

Ultra-Humanite: Genius mind in a gorilla body with tech that rivals Lexcorp's security systems

Wotan: Powerful sorcerer whose abilities once required Doctor Fate, Zatanna, and Constantine to contain

Atomic Skull: Walking nuclear reactor with a dangerous suit upgraded with Kryptonite-infused radiation

A fake Black Adam: Actually, a magical illusion created by Wotan, designed to distract the heavy hitters like Superman and Captain Marvel

"They're using Ivy's plants as their delivery system, powered by Wotan's magic," Raj explained. "Someone else is pulling their strings, but that's a problem for another day."

Raj's hologram expanded to show an intricate tactical map. "I've prepared specific countermeasures based on each villain's known weaknesses. Arsenal, you'll be using arrows with specialized payloads I designed after I hacked the Batcave and Watchtower databases. Batman's contingency files are quite... comprehensive."

The display showed detailed diagrams of custom arrows:

Pheromone Disruptors: Based on S.T.A.R. Labs research on plant communication

Neural Inhibitors: Derived from Martian Manhunter's psychic blocking technology

Thermal Dampeners: Using modified elements of Captain Cold's freeze technology

EMP Emitters: Based on designs from Lex Corp. sonic cannon

"Sentinel, your thermal gauntlets are calibrated to the specific frequency of Wotan's magic---I analyzed the energy patterns when I faced him myself earlier this year. That encounter left me with some damage, but I got what I needed: the exact frequency signature to create a counter-resonance that disrupts his Babylonian blood magic."

He then showed a detailed map of Gotham with plant growth predictions. "The Injustice League will follow this pattern---they have to. The magical-botanical interface requires specific node placement based on ley lines that run through Gotham. Their primary control node will be here," he pointed to a location, "because it's the only place where three ley lines intersect."

Raj leaned forward, suddenly serious. "I didn't train either of you to be warriors. I trained you to be architects of victory. Now go prove me right---again."

"He knew this would happen," Sentinel said quietly.

"He always does," Roy replied, reaching for a specialized quiver marked with the same red lotus symbol.

BIOSHIP --- 09:25 EDT, OCTOBER 2

M'gann piloted the Bioship through storm clouds as the Team headed for Louisiana. Robin studied satellite imagery on his holographic computer.

"The plants are attacking simultaneously in major cities worldwide," he reported. "This is coordinated—and big. Too big for us to handle alone."

"We'll find who's behind it," Aqualad assured him. "Batman said the Louisiana bayou shows signs of heavy power consumption."

Kid Flash nervously tapped his foot at super-speed. "Everyone's asking where the League is. Social media's blowing up."

Artemis checked her arrows, trying to stay calm. "They're handling the plants. We find the source."

Superboy stared out the window, his enhanced vision catching glimpses of destruction below. "There's a lot of people down there. Scared."

"Then let's end this," Aqualad said firmly.

GOTHAM --- 10:49 EDT, OCTOBER 2

Gotham City was overrun with massive plants. Buildings crumbled under giant vines, and toxic spores filled the air. At the center stood a huge plant tower glowing with green energy—exactly where Raj had predicted it would be.

Arsenal positioned himself on the Wayne Tower rooftop, which gave him the perfect vantage point to target the central node. Through his tactical visor, he spotted Ivy communing with her plants, her skin pulsing with chlorophyll as she directed the destruction.

"I see the primary bloom node," Arsenal reported. "Ivy's there with Ultra-Humanite and Joker. Just as Raj predicted."

Across the city, Sentinel hovered near the secondary node where Wotan cast complex spells, his hands weaving patterns that resembled Zatanna's most powerful incantations. Atomic Skull patrolled nearby, his nuclear fire casting eerie shadows.

"Wotan's using Sumerian binding rituals," Sentinel confirmed. "Exactly as Raj's files indicated."

Arsenal launched his first specialized arrow—a pheromone disruptor designed to scramble Ivy's connection to her plants. The arrow struck the base of the bloom spire, releasing microscopic counter-agents into the plant's vascular system.

The massive plant shuddered, but instead of collapsing as Raj had predicted, it seemed to adapt. A thick protective layer formed around the impact site, isolating the affected area.

"Nice try," Ivy called out, her eyes scanning the surrounding buildings. "My babies have evolved. They can compartmentalize now—just like me."

With a flick of her wrist, dozens of vine tendrils whipped toward Arsenal's position. He dodged the first wave, rolling across the rooftop as concrete shattered behind him. The second wave came faster, catching his ankle and yanking him off his feet. He tumbled toward the edge of the skyscraper, firing a grappling arrow that barely caught a ledge ten floors below.

Hanging precariously, Arsenal watched as more vines slithered toward him like hungry serpents. He sliced through the tendril gripping his ankle with a vibrating knife, then swung himself through a window, crashing into an abandoned office space.

Blood trickled down his forehead as he caught his breath. "Jeevika, analyze attack pattern and recalibrate arrows," he whispered, his voice echoing through the empty building.

[Ivy has implemented a symbiotic defense system,] Jeevika responded through his earpiece. [Recommend targeting junction points where plant vascular systems connect to magical conduits.]

Arsenal peered through the shattered window, noting how the plants pulsed with unnaturally synchronized patterns. [Marking targets now.] he said, his tactical visor highlighting key structural points.

Outside, Ultra-Humanite activated defensive protocols, his gorilla hands moving with surprising dexterity across his control panel. "We were warned someone might try to disrupt our network. Countermeasures engaged!"

A shimmering field surrounded the plant structure, neutralizing Arsenal's second arrow before it could reach its target. The archer gritted his teeth—this wasn't in Raj's briefing. They'd clearly upgraded their defenses.

"Time to improvise," Arsenal muttered, quickly recalibrating his next arrow to emit a frequency that might penetrate the shield.

The Joker cackled, pulling out a canister of his latest toxin. "Unexpected guests! Time to liven up this garden party!" He hurled the canister with surprising accuracy, forcing Arsenal to abandon his position as toxic gas billowed outward.

The archer's mask filters strained against the potent toxin. Warning indicators flashed across his HUD—Joker's new formula was breaking down his protective systems faster than anticipated. He had minutes at most before his filters failed completely.

"I see you behind that mask!" Joker taunted, pulling out a tommy gun that should have been too heavy for his lean frame to handle. He fired wildly, bullets splintering wood and glass around Arsenal's position. "Come play with Uncle J!"

Arsenal fired a specialized neutralizer arrow, but the Joker was ready. He shot it mid-air with a well-aimed playing card, causing the neutralizer to release prematurely.

"Did you really think I wouldn't have a counter for fancy arrows?" Joker grinned maniacally. "I've been dealing with Bat-toys for years!"

A massive vine crashed through the floor beneath Arsenal, sending him plummeting downward. He fired a cable arrow that wrapped around a support beam, swinging him through the chaos as the entire floor collapsed. As he landed in a roll on the level below, he found himself face-to-face with three of Ivy's humanoid plant creatures—walking masses of thorns and toxic pollen.

"Intruder identified," they rasped in unison, their voices like rustling leaves.

"Let's see how you handle heat," Arsenal growled, firing three incendiary arrows in rapid succession. The plant creatures burst into flames but continued their advance, burning yet undettered.

"Impressive," Ivy's voice echoed through them. "But my children are willing to burn for me."

Arsenal's next volley—a cluster of EMP arrows—finally caught Ultra-Humanite off guard. They detonated simultaneously, overwhelming his defensive grid just enough for one of Arsenal's code-worms to penetrate his system.

Screens flickered and sparked as Ultra-Humanite roared in frustration. "Clever! But these security protocols adapt in real-time!" His massive fingers flew across the keyboard, attempting to isolate the intrusion.

"You're good," Arsenal acknowledged, blood trickling from a cut on his forehead from his narrow escape. "But I just need to be good enough."

LOUISIANA BAYOU --- 11:15 EDT, OCTOBER 2

The Team moved stealthily through the swamp, approaching a dome structure partially concealed by vegetation. Inside, Count Vertigo and Black Adam monitored global feeds of the destruction.

"The League is divided," Vertigo observed with satisfaction. "They cannot be everywhere at once."

"The sidekicks will come here," Black Adam predicted. "The Justice League is predictable in their deployment strategies."

On cue, the Team struck. Kid Flash created a diversion, racing around the perimeter as Artemis launched smoke arrows to obscure their approach. Robin and Aqualad moved in through the blind spots, while Miss Martian remained camouflaged overhead.

"We have company," Vertigo announced calmly. "Just as expected."

Black Adam launched skyward, his supernatural senses detecting Miss Martian despite her camouflage. "I can hear your heartbeat, Martian," he growled, grabbing her before she could react and hurling her into a nearby tree.

Superboy roared, leaping to intercept Black Adam with a powerful punch that sent the villain crashing through the control center's roof. The impact shook the entire facility, disrupting equipment and creating an opening for Robin to slip inside.

GOTHAM --- 11:16 EDT, OCTOBER 2

Across the city, Sentinel engaged Wotan directly. The clone's thermal gauntlets glowed with increasing intensity as he approached the sorcerer.

"Your magic follows predictable patterns," Sentinel stated, attempting to dodge an arcane blast. This time, however, the magical energy curved midair, tracking him and slamming into his chest with unexpected force.

Sentinel crashed through the wall of an abandoned building, his suit integrity warnings blaring. The counter-frequency technology in his gauntlets flickered uncertainly.

Wotan hovered closer; his lips curled in a cruel smile. "Did you think I wouldn't evolve my casting techniques? Your master may have survived our last encounter, but he clearly didn't learn enough."

The ancient sorcerer began weaving a new spell, one that formed chains of crackling energy that wrapped around Sentinel before he could fully recover. The bindings seared through his protective suit, causing actual pain—something the clone rarely experienced.

"My Babylonian blood magic now incorporates Egyptian binding hexes," Wotan explained casually. "Whatever countermeasures you have are based on outdated intelligence."

Sentinel strained against the magical bonds, his enhanced strength barely creating enough slack to allow movement. The neural inhibitors in his suit were overloading, unable to fully protect him from the magical assault on his nervous system.

[Systems... failing] Jeevika reported. Sentinel through gritted teeth, watching as his gauntlets' power levels fluctuated erratically. Raj's contingency hadn't accounted for this evolution in Wotan's abilities.

With a tremendous effort, Sentinel managed to bring his hands together, manually overriding the gauntlet's safety protocols to create a feedback pulse. The resulting energy surge was dangerous—potentially damaging his own systems—but it created just enough magical interference to weaken Wotan's bonds.

The magical chains shattered, releasing a shockwave that knocked Wotan backward. Sentinel's suit sparked dangerously, damage reports flashing across his HUD as multiple systems failed simultaneously.

[Adaptive response initiated.] J announced. The Kryptonian clone's eyes glowed red as he channeled heat vision through his damaged gauntlets, creating a focused beam that struck Wotan directly in the chest.

The sorcerer screamed, his magical shields buckling under the unexpected combination of thermal and magical energy. "Impossible!" he snarled, his own counterspells forming too slowly to block the attack.

As Sentinel broke free, Atomic Skull charged in, nuclear fire blazing from his skull. "I'll melt that fancy suit with you inside it!"

The radiation blast that followed was far more intense than Raj had documented. Sentinel's suit absorbed the initial impact, but warning lights cascaded across his HUD as radiation levels exceeded safety parameters by 200%. Parts of his outer armor began to bubble and warp under the intense heat.

"You have Kryptonian DNA, don't you?" Atomic Skull observed with malicious glee. "Let's see how you handle Kryptonite radiation!"

The nuclear villain adjusted something on his containment suit, and the color of his radiation shifted to a sickly green. Sentinel immediately felt nauseous, his enhanced strength wavering as the Kryptonite radiation penetrated his damaged suit.

[Contingency required] J announced, activating emergency protocols in his suit. Lead-lined compartments automatically deployed around critical areas, but the protection was incomplete due to battle damage.

Despite the damage, Sentinel pushed forward through the radiation field. Each step was agony as his suit's cooling systems failed one by one. With a final lunge, he managed to strike the containment nodes at the base of Skull's helmet—exactly where Raj's schematics had indicated the weakest points would be.

The effect wasn't as immediate as expected. Atomic Skull staggered but remained functional, his containment suit automatically rerouting power.

"That might have worked on my old suit," Skull laughed, preparing another blast. "But I've had upgrades!"

Sentinel's vision blurred from Kryptonite exposure, but his tactical systems remained partially functional. He spotted a structural weakness where Atomic Skull had modified his original suit—an imperfect seal where the new Kryptonite emitter connected to his power source.

With his remaining strength, Sentinel fired a concentrated pulse from his failing gauntlet, striking precisely at the junction point. The suit's power regulation systems cascaded into failure, causing Atomic Skull's radiation to fluctuate wildly. The villain howled as his own power turned against him, forcing him to emergency shutdown before a catastrophic overload.

LOUISIANA BAYOU --- 11:20 EDT, OCTOBER 2

Inside the control center, Robin worked frantically at the main console while Aqualad defended him from Count Vertigo's attacks. The vertigo effect made the young hero dizzy, but his Atlantean physiology provided some resistance.

"Their systems are incredibly sophisticated," Robin reported, fingers flying across the keyboard. "These aren't just plants—they're techno-organic constructs with magical enhancement!"

Kid Flash zoomed around Poison Ivy, who had remained at the control center while her plants did her bidding in Gotham. "So how do we shut them down?"

"Working on it!" Robin shouted, downloading data as quickly as possible. "There's a primary node in Gotham controlling everything. If someone could take that out—"

"The Justice League is busy with the attacks!" Artemis yelled, firing arrows to keep the Joker at bay. "They can't reach Gotham!"

Outside, Superboy grappled with Black Adam, each punch creating shockwaves that rippled through the swamp. Miss Martian recovered from her initial attack, using her telekinesis to hurl debris at their powerful opponent.

"This doesn't feel right," Superboy grunted between blows. "He's strong, but something's off—"

M'gann's eyes widened as she scanned Black Adam's mind. "It's not him! It's a magical construct—an illusion!"

In Gotham, Arsenal was systematically dismantling the Injustice League's control over the plant network. Each arrow struck with calculated precision, targeting junction points that Raj had identified through his analysis of similar plant structures from previous Ivy attacks.

The Joker lunged at Arsenal with a blade coated in toxin, but the archer had anticipated this move. He sidestepped and fired a net arrow that enveloped the Clown Prince of Crime, carbon nanofibers tightening with each struggle.

"Not fair!" Joker complained, his manic grin never wavering. "You're supposed to be surprised by my tricks!"

"Nothing about you is surprising," Arsenal replied coldly, nocking his final specialized arrow—Raj's masterpiece of bioengineering.

The arrow flew true, striking the heart of the bloom spire. For a moment, nothing happened. Then, the bio-coded flame-burst seed activated, igniting the control node from within. The effect cascaded through the massive plant structure, causing it to convulse and then begin to rapidly wither.

Throughout Gotham, plant structures collapsed as their connection to the central node failed. Buildings that had been seconds away from collapse were suddenly freed as the monstrous vines lost their strength and vitality.

Poison Ivy screamed in agony, feeling the death of her creations. "What have you done?!" she cried, collapsing to her knees.

In Louisiana, the Team had reached the Injustice League's base. Robin worked at their control panel when suddenly all screens went dark.

"The entire network is collapsing!" he exclaimed, fingers flying across the keyboard. "Something's happened to the control nodes in Gotham!"

"Impossible," Count Vertigo snarled. "No one could disable Ivy's network that quickly!"

"Someone just did," Robin replied, pulling up satellite imagery that showed the massive plant structures in Gotham withering away.

BIOSHIP --- 18:30 EDT, OCTOBER 2

The Bioship hummed softly as it cut through the air, carrying the Team back toward Mount Justice. The mood inside was heavy—Louisiana had been intense, but the aftershocks from Gotham were harder to shake.

Robin tapped at his holographic screen. "Confirmed—Gotham's bloom node collapsed minutes before we took down the Louisiana site."

Kaldur leaned in. "Do we know who was responsible?"

Robin nodded, face unreadable. "Two operatives. Arsenal and Sentinel."

That drew reactions across the cabin.

"Roy?" Artemis sat up straighter. "Our Roy?"

"No," Wally corrected, frowning. "The Roy. The original. The one who bailed after we found out I was a clone—uh, that Red Arrow was a clone." He trailed off. "You know what I mean."

"Yeah," Artemis muttered, crossing her arms. "The one who never said goodbye."

Superboy looked up. "But Sentinel helped us. He's solid."

Robin nodded. "Match has been consistent. Tactical. Controlled. Roy, on the other hand... we haven't heard from him in weeks."

"And now they're operating together? Are they still with Nexus?" M'gann asked.

Robin pulled up grainy footage—Sentinel burning through Wotan's wards, Arsenal coordinating precision strikes on Ivy's spire.

"This wasn't freelance work," he said. "It was a precision op. Nexus gave them intel. Arsenal used custom arrows we've never seen. Sentinel's suit has upgrades beyond Cadmus."

"Roy's not League," Artemis said quietly. "And he made it clear he didn't want to be Team either."

"Maybe not," Kaldur said, watching the footage. "But he hasn't stopped fighting. He just stopped fighting with us."

No one spoke for a moment.

Superboy finally broke the silence. "If Sentinel's with him, then maybe... Roy's not completely lost."

Robin narrowed his eyes at the display. "Maybe. Or maybe he's just found a new mission—and decided he doesn't need us for it."

WATCHTOWER — 19:08 EDT, OCTOBER 2

The Justice League gathered as reports came in. The Team had captured the Injustice League leaders in Louisiana, while the mysterious intervention in Gotham had destroyed the entire plant network.

Batman reviewed footage showing Arsenal and Sentinel leaving before League members arrived.

"They didn't ask for backup," Black Canary noted.

"They didn't need it," Batman replied. "Their strategy targeted the system's weaknesses rather than fighting directly."

"Nexus taught them well," Superman observed. "But where is he?"

"Unknown," Batman said. "He hasn't been seen for weeks."

ARGUS HQ, WASHINGTON D.C. — 19:10 EDT, OCTOBER 2

Amanda Waller watched the footage repeatedly. Arsenal and Sentinel had defeated global threats without being detected by ARGUS surveillance.

"That boy set up his own shadow network," Waller said. "And now it's taking down Injustice League-level threats."

"Are we designating him a threat?" an agent asked.

"No," Waller replied sharply. "We're designating him a sovereign asset. One with contingency plans we never approved."

THE LIGHT'S INNER CIRCLE — 19:10 EDT, OCTOBER 2

The hologram flickered to life, casting pale blue light across the shadowed faces seated around the obsidian table.

Lex Luthor, calm and calculating, was already mid-sentence.

"—collapsed with surgical precision. No League involvement. No signatures we can trace. Just two unidentified operatives, cloaked from satellite imaging and ARGUS net sweeps."

Klarion twitched irritably in his seat. "Someone's meddling. They disrupted Ivy's bond, evaded Wotan's magic, and even survived Skull's Kryptonite emissions." He scowled, cradling a purring Teekl. "I hate meddlers."

Queen Bee studied the satellite playback from Gotham—brief, distorted silhouettes, specialized tech, and perfectly executed disruption points. "This was not a battle. It was an audit. Every weakness exposed."

Ocean Master folded his arms. "This wasn't the League. Their style is brute force and public declarations. This was... private. Surgical. Planned."

"Indeed," Ra's al Ghul said, stepping from the shadows with silent poise. "The moves of a strategist who has studied each of us—individually. Someone who knows how our systems breathe... and where to cut off the air."

Luthor smirked faintly. "Someone who thinks like me... but stays invisible. Even ARGUS is chasing ghosts."

He tapped the table, and a flicker of corrupted ARGUS surveillance logs displayed only scrambled metadata:

[UNKNOWN] – Power Signature: Masked. Trace origin: null. Analyst note: event pre-modeled.]

Klarion's eyes narrowed. "Precogs can't see him. My spells slip off. Even the Lords are whispering."

Queen Bee arched an eyebrow. "Then we may be facing a true wild card."

Savage closed his eyes for a moment, as if listening to something beyond the room. "I felt it... for a breath. Not chaos, not order. Something new."

The room fell into silence, the weight of that statement settling over them like fog.

Klarion leaned forward, voice lilting with twisted amusement. "Do you know his name yet?"

"Nexus" Luthor said smoothly.

The hologram dimmed. But the Light's attention no longer wandered.

They were watching Gotham. Watching Arsenal. Watching Sentinel.

And now, somewhere in the shadows, they were watching for the one behind them.

The architect. The anomaly. The Nexus.

ABANDONED OBSERVATORY — 19:18 EDT, OCTOBER 2

At the Observatory, Arsenal winced as Jeevika's medical system treated his arm wound. Sentinel stood nearby; his suit damaged from battle.

[Mission impact assessment complete,] Jeevika reported. [Plant network neutralized in 17 minutes, 43 seconds. Civilian casualties reduced by an estimated 94% compared to uninterrupted attack scenarios. Damage to Gotham infrastructure reduced by 76%.]

"The Injustice League was better prepared than expected," Arsenal said, examining a readout of Wotan's magical frequencies. "Their defenses were significantly upgraded from Raj's projections."

"But we still stopped them," Sentinel pointed out. "The contingency plan worked."

Arsenal nodded toward a container holding the damaged bio-arrow he'd recovered. "We should analyze this. Raj would want us to understand why the magical interference was stronger than anticipated."

[I've already begun analysis,] Jeevika announced. [Preliminary results suggest Wotan incorporated Egyptian rune structures into his Sumerian base magic—a hybrid approach Raj hadn't accounted for in his models.]

Arsenal removed his mask, becoming Roy Harper again. "We'll need to update all the contingency plans. If they're adapting, we need to stay ahead."

"Raj's files contain contingencies for 347 possible villain combinations," Sentinel noted. "We should review all of them against new data."

Roy nodded, looking at the holographic display showing news reports of the defeated plant structures around the world. Citizens were being rescued from partially collapsed buildings, emergency services were containing the remaining threats, and the Justice League was receiving praise for their swift response—even though they weren't responsible for dismantling the core threat.

"Until Raj returns, we maintain his network," Roy said with conviction. "We stay in the shadows and execute the contingencies when needed."

What mattered was that Raj's plan had worked. He had predicted the threat and prepared them to handle it. The Injustice League was defeated, and nobody knew who was truly responsible.

Arsenal and Sentinel had done their job—not as heroes seeking recognition, but as the architects of victory Raj had trained them to be. In the shadowy war between the Light and the Justice League, they had just made their first significant move.
