Research Log Entry

July 24th: We conducted our first ability test on 'Nebula,' a curious Psychic-type Pokémon. The researchers caring for it have grown quite fond of it, but whenever we attempt to run experiments, this Pokémon displays unusual vigilance and tries to escape using Teleport.

Additional note: We've implemented 107 security measures in advance, including countermeasures against Teleport. Nebula failed to escape.

Further observation: Disappointingly, after Teleport was blocked, Nebula didn't display any other abilities, rendering our additional security measures unnecessary. It seems it only knows 'Teleport,' making it no different from a wild Abra. Its physical capabilities are equally underwhelming.

July 25th: We conducted a second test on Nebula to evaluate its learning ability. Initially uncooperative, Nebula quickly dropped its guard after being fed by one of our researchers, becoming friendly again. We began teaching it Psychic-type moves.

First day results: Attempted to teach 'Agility' - Failed.

July 26th: Attempted to teach 'Confusion' - Failed.

July 27th: Attempted to teach 'Psyshock' - Failed.

July 29th: Attempted to teach 'Psychic' - Failed.

The move-teaching tests continued for some time, and the consistent line of failures in the research log made even Roy's blood pressure rise as he read through it.

Professor Charles, who wrote the diary, was clearly furious.

August 5th: I wanted to abandon the idea of teaching Nebula new moves. Even Pokémon with poor talent typically show some "progress" during training. However, Nebula seems completely blank... I've concluded it can't learn any moves except Teleport, making it less capable than even an Abra.

I'm beginning to doubt whether this Pokémon is truly related to divine power as theorized.

We know very little about Alola's Spirit Realm. Nebula might simply be a common Pokémon there, like Rattata. We may have misunderstood its significance after finding it in the temple.

I reported this theory to the Executive, who instructed me to try again.

Perhaps I'm being too impatient. Let's continue for another day.

August 6th: Nebula resisted training, fought against researchers, and attempted escape again. However, after our researchers offered candy, Nebula immediately showed affection toward us again.

This is utterly disheartening.

Even Rattata possesses basic vigilance and survival instincts. Nebula lacks everything - it can't even catch a common Meowth. It immediately drops its guard and becomes friendly with anyone who offers food... For any creature, this is extremely foolish behavior.

I firmly believe Nebula is definitely not a creature related to any "God" - it's less impressive than a Rattata.

August 7th: I declared to my superiors that I, Professor Charles, would stake my lifelong reputation on Nebula being merely a weak and unintelligent Pokémon. If my assessment proves incorrect, I'll donate all my assets to charity and retire to my hometown.

The Executive was impressed by my conviction and agreed to transfer 'Nebula' to other research groups, assigning me to their 'Empty Shell' project instead.

Pffft!

Roy quickly covered his mouth to stifle a laugh.

As a trained Pokémon Trainer, he rarely laughed during such serious matters, unless... he simply couldn't help it.

Cosmog - or "Nebula" as this Illuminati Professor called it - had undergone such an astonishing change in status over just a few days:

Child of God → Similar to Abra → Worse than Abra → Probably just an Alolan Rattata → Weaker and less intelligent than a Raticate...

The irony was palpable.

This was a creature that could truly evolve into a "god," or at least "the prototype of a god." In another universe, it might even be considered a primordial deity.

Yet here it was, evaluated as 'weak and stupid.'

Thinking objectively, if Roy didn't know the Pokémon's true potential from the original games, the Professor's judgment would seem reasonable based on Nebula's observed behavior.

The Professor wasn't being unreasonable - he had conducted various experiments proving Nebula was seemingly worthless.

As an objective observer, Roy had to admit that Cosmog's appearance wasn't as impressive as Arceus... ahem, its abilities weren't even on par with a Raticate.

After a moment, Roy turned to the next page of the diary.

August 8th: I officially took over the 'Empty Shell' project and reviewed the phase one research records.

After reading them, I'm convinced of my suspicions - this truly is divine territory!

The empty shell contains incredible power beyond our analytical capabilities.

Through extensive testing, the previous research team discovered that the 'Empty Shell' can transform ordinary electricity into extraordinarily powerful alien lightning.

This alien lightning appears blue and, at equal voltage, demonstrates power dozens of times stronger than normal electricity. Moreover, even Pokémon with the 'Lightning Rod' Ability cannot neutralize this alien lightning.

August 9th: Not only Lightning Rod, but further tests revealed that most Pokémon Abilities fail against alien lightning. These include Filter, Sand Veil, Flash Fire, Volt Absorb, Snow Cloak...

Professor Charles listed dozens of Abilities, all rendered useless against the alien lightning.

Roy's hand froze slightly as he turned the page, recognizing what this alien lightning might be.

— Fusion Bolt.

The bearer of this alien lightning was also a 'god' - Zekrom, the Legendary Dragon of Ideals.

The ultimate Electric deity.

"This empty shell, could it be..." Roy strained to recall the plot details. "DNA Splicers?"

DNA Splicers - the mysterious item allowing Zekrom to fuse with another legendary Pokémon... with Kyurem, the Dragon god of ice.

Its diamond-shaped hollow shell description matched perfectly.

If these were DNA Splicers, the presence of Zekrom's power made sense.

The next log entry confirmed Roy's theory:

August 10th: Since the Empty Shell can transform electrical energy into this alien lightning, can it transform other energy types? Following this hypothesis, I initiated a series of experiments.

August 11th: All eighteen Types were tested. Unfortunately, except for Electric-type energy, only Ice-type energy underwent transformation, creating heterogeneous ice vapor.

The temperature of this alien ice is terrifyingly low, nearly identical to Sheer Cold. Additionally, its heat-absorption properties are extraordinary. The moment it manifests, it consumes all surrounding thermal energy, destroying sections of our laboratory.

Compared to the alien lightning, this ice-type energy is far more unpredictable.

Roy could now confirm with certainty that this 'Empty Shell' was indeed the DNA Splicers.

This raised new questions.

Why would DNA Splicers appear in Alola's Spirit Realm?

Kyurem and Zekrom belonged to Unova, not Alola.

Puzzled, Roy speculated this might relate to the destruction of the Pokémon world mentioned earlier.

He continued reading the log, noticing the timeline had jumped:

August 15th: Damn it! The alien ice incident exposed our location, and the League interfered again. Through covert channels, we relocated from the Russian Federation to China. Our influence is limited here, requiring discretion.

However, our minimal presence here means the League won't suspect we've moved to China, allowing us to conduct experiments undisturbed.

I intend to create a Pokémon capable of wielding this alien lightning. Once this project succeeds, heh, Elite Four members will pose no threat.

August 16th: The first batch of Electric-type Pokémon arrived. We began injecting them with the alien lightning.

Surprisingly, Pokémon injected with alien lightning completely lost their ability to control electricity!

Fascinating phenomenon.

August 17th: The second batch of Electric-type Pokémon arrived. Like yesterday, they all lost their electrical manipulation abilities. Perhaps no Pokémon can adapt to alien lightning? To verify this hypothesis, I need more test subjects.

August 18th: Damn it! These incompetents told me I can't purchase more Pokémon? The black market I visited recently was reported and shut down? This country's control over illegal trading is unexpectedly strict? Unbelievable!

I have no choice but to use the Pokémon already in my possession for experiments.

August 27th: Subject No.076 died. I nearly forgot - prolonged inability to control internal electrical energy causes continuous damage to a Pokémon's body...

August 28th: All test subjects from 001 to 098 have died. I have fewer than ten experimental subjects remaining - insufficient to continue research! I must report this to the organization.

September 1st: The potential of alien lightning proved irresistible to the organization. The Executive approved my request and launched a poaching operation in a local sanctuary in China. They should return this afternoon. I'm eager to see if this batch contains Electric-types suitable for my needs.

I've already planned their numbering system, starting from 0120. Yes, the four-digit format represents my expectations for them.

Roy paused, his brow furrowing slightly.

He felt disgusted by Professor Charles's inhumane research methods.

However, that wasn't what made him stop reading.

He suddenly remembered the Elekid from earlier.

'That Elekid was numbered 0131... very close to 0120. They were likely captured in the same operation.'

Was that Elekid captured by the Illuminati on September 1st?

The date was significant to Roy - it was the same day he enrolled at Capital University and chose Riolu as his starter Pokémon.

Such a strange coincidence... fate works in mysterious ways.

The log was nearing its end.

During this period, Professor Charles appeared too busy to maintain regular entries. He wrote only once every four or five days, often neglecting to note the date.

The entries contained mostly complaints about research difficulties - nothing of intelligence value.

Until this entry:

Undated: Subject No.0456 is dead.

Over 400 test subjects, and none could adapt to the alien lightning.

Among them, No.0131 intrigued me greatly. It was among the first batch brought to the laboratory and survived for more than two months, while the average lifespan of other subjects was merely ten days.

Initially, I thought it possessed adaptability to alien lightning, but detailed examination revealed No.0131 simply had remarkable vitality. Like the others, it couldn't control electricity or adapt to the alien lightning coursing through its body.

After several poaching operations, the League discovered our presence in China, necessitating another relocation.

It's time to find an opportunity to leave this country. One can hardly accomplish anything with such restrictions.

I'm aging... I almost misplaced this log again. Hopefully I won't lose it...

We should never have come to this country. I've never encountered such stringent border control - we haven't found a single opportunity to escape abroad. Damn, I hate it here.

Good news from my subordinates - a group of Pokémon University students will be conducting fieldwork nearby. Among them is the son of an Elite Four member. This presents substantial leverage. If we capture several students, we could force Chinese officials to permit our departure...

I heard one student possesses an Alolan Vulpix. Perfect - I can study whether Alolan Ice-types can adapt to alien ice. I've requested permission to capture this Vulpix alive. The Executive has approved...

The log ended abruptly.

Upon finishing, Roy realized he had discovered the identity of those who had attempted to murder him.
