Chapter 57: Creation of the Spell
At this moment, the noisy zombie trail, with its fluttering "fireflies," briefly returned to calm.
"Alexander, how long until a new batch of zombies appears?" Kate tugged on Alexander's left hand and asked curiously, interrupting his second round of philosophical musings about wizards.
"About an hour," Alexander replied casually, sensing the magical currents flowing through the land ahead.
"Ugh, that long?" Kate groaned, waving her wand around aimlessly.
"You don't have to wait passively. You can inject magic into the ground to speed up the zombie regeneration," Alexander reminded her.
The land itself had accumulated magic over many years. The slow recovery wasn't due to a lack of power—it was because nearly all the zombies had been physically destroyed. Even the tombstones had been shattered. If this kind of damage happened ten more times, the entire cemetery and the zombie trail would be scrapped.
Wanting to preserve the area for his own amusement and study, Alexander began to slowly channel his magic into the land. The invisible, colorless, perpetual-motion-like energy began to flow steadily.
Buzz. Buzz.
All around them, tombstones began to shake. As time passed, new ones slowly emerged from the earth. At that moment, even the unseen spirits seemed to stir.
Alexander halted his magic infusion. The birth of a poltergeist shouldn't happen just yet. If one were to form now, the creator behind this haunted trail would definitely interfere. Poltergeists, like ghosts, are immortal and impossible to hide, which would interfere with the "memory-wiping" tricks often employed in this type of magic illusion.
Still, Alexander couldn't help but think, This is a rare opportunity. A poltergeist born of my magic would certainly fear Barrow like Peeves does… no, it might go even further—it would obey me.
"We can even redesign its appearance once we leave. Although the alchemy cabin in Smith's Castle is mobile, it's not as self-sustaining as Howl's Moving Castle. But a poltergeist would make the perfect hearth spirit for a wizard's home," Alexander mused as he reached out and patted Kate's head.
"Eh? Alexander, what's with that evil grin?" Kate looked up at him with a mix of 2 parts disgust, 3 parts fascination, and 5 parts confusion.
"Is this devil plotting something?"
"Forget it. What am I afraid of? He's just a kid who hasn't even grown chest hair," she reassured herself, rolling her eyes.
"Really?" Alexander raised an eyebrow. "The tombstones are back to normal, so the zombies should be appearing any moment now."
"Really?" Kate asked, unconvinced.
"Look!" Alexander pointed.
Under the dim light of night, zombies with grayish skin, tattered clothing, and rotting bodies began crawling from the earth again, one after another.
Alexander noticed something odd—the zombies' clothes, for both men and women, had reformed. Previously, the clothes were like part of their flesh, clinging tightly. Now, they resembled actual garments again.
Should I develop a spell to remove clothing? Alexander wondered thoughtfully. Not out of perversion—this was pure magical curiosity. Like scholars studying what's under a Dementor's hood.
For Alexander, creating new spells was as easy as breathing.
For instance, if he wanted a spell to undress someone (purely for magical examination, of course), all he needed was a strong intent, a word to match it, and enough magical resonance to imprint it into the surrounding magical field. After two or three attempts, a new spell would be born.
When Alexander first discovered this process, he went on a creative spree, crafting spells like a madman. He could fill an entire book with them.
Some of the more useful spells included:
Reading Spell – tap a book with your wand, and the contents would stream directly into your mind. Requires continuous magic expenditure.
Lightsaber Curse – a low-end version of Sectumsempra, without the venomous effect. It's a sharp, glowing blade of magic extending from your wand, very cool and quite useful in combat.
Madness Spell – maximizes instinctive reactions. In this state, magic enhances the body's mobility and reflexes. You become like a beast: hyper-aware, able to dodge spells and shrug off control magic.
That said, Alexander didn't use the Madness Spell often—his body modification skills were already at level 4, and his combination of thought and detection magic made it unnecessary.
The spells he created had simple, English-style names:
"Read" – for the Reading Spell.
"Sword" – for the Lightsaber Curse.
"Instinct" – for the Madness Spell.
These mantras were surprisingly effective—despite being in English—because of how Alexander crafted them.
Usually, common languages like English were not suited for spells. The words had too many meanings and associations, weakening their magical precision. But Alexander had unique advantages:
1. Unified Intent: For example, the spell "Pack" worked because people only used the word to mean packing things. It was clear and focused. A housewife casting cleaning magic while muttering "Pack" could accidentally create a new spell.
2. Emotional & Magical Reinforcement: For less unified words like "Instinct," Alexander infused the spell with strong emotions and unique inflections, creating a unique magical signature.
3. Strong Willpower: For spells like "Sword," he had to fully embody the concept—imagining himself as the sword, with complete devotion.
These techniques made it hard for other wizards to casually learn his spells. Without the original emotion, willpower, and understanding, the words were meaningless.
Otherwise, if every wizard could cast spells just by shouting "Fly" or "Die," it would be chaos.
That's why most British spells still drew from Latin and Greek—dead languages with precise meaning and no Muggle interference.
But Alexander was different. He could bend reality in his own way.
