Chapter 34 - Somewhere Nice

Sevras moved at breathtaking speed, blasting past floating islands and the chains that connected them. With each flap of the alabaster dragon's wings, we reached a new magnitude of speed and I was almost sure we would break the sound barrier if we went any faster.

It took all my strength to not be knocked off by the gales sweeping across Servas's body as he travelled in the sky below at jetspeed. While the white dragon was more than capable of soaring high in the sky above, it had to remain empathetic of its riders who were more than vulnerable to becoming pancakes by the crushing.

Regardless, I was constantly looping the long golden strands of the dragon around my limbs to hold me in place. The giant Orochi and the eerie Blair also took one knee, creeping one hand in the dragon's scales to have something to hold on to.

Lucius on the other hand stood straight up in the middle of Sevras's skull, humming a little tune.

"Forgive me that we cannot fly through the blue skies that are more fitting for our steed, you must imagine what alarm a huge dragon like Sevras would cause if we were found flying above the islands. I have no interest in provoking the White Feather Clan currently, they'll be easier to manage later."

White Feather clan? Like the legacy clan that presided over the more populated areas of the chained isles? Makes sense, I suppose but that just meant that I had a lower chance of being saved.

I did make a mental note that Lucius was avoiding the legacy clans, even a saint like him had to be careful even with the powers he had. White feather had its own saint and was a close vassal of the Great Clan Valor, no matter how powerful Lucius was--he wouldn't win against them. That at least brought me some little consolation, that my kidnapper wasn't immortal.

The darkness of the Sky Below was chilling, it slowly creeped up on me with little resistance and stayed there like a constant. There wasn't anything to fight back against it, even the holy presence of Sevras did little to quell the darkness of the void. While I knew there weren't any immediate dangers in this void, the fact that there was still an unknown in this atmosphere was terrifying.

Sevras moved fast, regardless of whether it was blind or not, its wings burst with complete confidence towards a direction in the darkness.

It was like that for a few minutes, a glistening dragon made of quartz moving through the darkness like a lone shooting star in the night sky.

Eventually, Sevras reeled its head back and expanded all four of his talons as it approached a large island with an underside larger than a glacier.

It swung its body in a spiral around the bottom of the island, almost throwing me off if it weren't for the many knots I had tying myself to Sevras's golden fur.

I closed my eyes from the upcoming gust with the force of a truck behind it and only loosened my grip on Sevras when it seemed like the white dragon came to a stop.

In front of me was a large shattered mirror at one end of the island's underside, a few times larger than Sevras. Sevras studied the mirror surface for a second and the mirror reflected the white dragon back.

Its surface then shimmered, becoming more dull and then liquid like flowing silver. A ripple formed in the middle, becoming larger and larger until an opening formed in the middle for the big dragon to slip into.

Sevras didn't waste any time latching onto the edges of the hole and dived in.

The chamber we were in was mesmerizing, similar to the lobby of a large ornate mansion but every single thing was made of polished mirrors, shattering my reflection into a million angles.

Each floor tile under me, each wall to the sides, the chandelier above, the smooth stairs in front, the fine tables next to me, the double doors leading to other rooms--every single thing was carved intricately by a reflective material. I couldn't believe my own eyes, wondering how someone could create anything like this.

Sevras let us down, everyone cleanly stepping off the dragon while I climbed down shaking. Shortly after, the dragon closed its amber eyes and disappeared into fleeting sparks, gone from the material world and returning to Lucius's soul sea.

I had my hands on my knees as I looked down at the mirror floor under me, showing my bewildered expression with sweat dripping down my chin.

The other three people in the room watched as I collected myself slowly and then turned to walk up the wide stairs carpeted with a dull silver, the only thing that didn't really hurt my eyes in this place.

At the end pages of the stairs was a large ballroom made purely out of reflective crystal, larger than any room I'd been in before. To my sides were sharp pillars made out of pristine glass, rising high and piercing through the crystal ceiling like a spear. The floor under me had checkerboard patterns made from patterns of white and grey mirrors creaking under our weight.

While there were windows decorating the spaces on the walls between the pillars, each one the size of a house, the outside which the windows unveiled was nothing more than pure white.

The place was unnerving, each mirror surface distorting my sense of space, and it didn't help that my nervous expression was reflected to me a million angles back. I felt like someone was watching me from multiple different tv screens.

CRACK!

A sharp splinter tore through the air, making me flinch. Simultaneously, all the mirrors in the room started taking on different shades of colors.

I looked to my left to see Orochi and Bair sharing the same sense of bewilderment I was feeling, although they seemed more irritated than terrified.

Lucius didn't seem happy for once and walked to the center of the mirror ballroom flashing with colors. He raised one finger and tapped it against the air, and to my surprise, a glass-sound responded in kind.

The air shimmered, and a tetrahedral black prism exposed itself.

In the middle of it was a silhouette of a human seemingly made out of glistening white strings, sitting in the middle of the prism with its legs crossed.

Lucius tapped the prism again and the figure trembled, white sparks emanating from its skin.

"Wake up, it's time for dinner."
