Malygos, the Spellweaver, Blue Dragon Aspect, and guardian of magic, was the eldest of the five. Ever since Deathwing's betrayal and the Dragon Soul's devastating blow that killed his consort, Sindragosa, and decimated his flight, Malygos had languished in a ten-thousand-year descent into madness within the Nexus in Northrend's Borean Tundra. His last true moment of lucidity had been a decade prior, during Deathwing's siege outside Grim Batol. While thoroughly thrashing the Black Aspect had provided a fleeting sense of satisfaction, the sight of his dwindling Blue Dragonflight was a constant, agonizing wound, especially in the lonely hours of the night.
Lately, a new source of agitation had consumed his fractured mind: the magical cannon that had bombarded Icecrown Glacier from the south. This blatant misuse of world-ending magic was an undeniable provocation to his flight. Finally, his loyal agent, Cyanigosa, returned with the disturbing truth: the source of this volatile energy was Dalaran, the human city of magic in the Eastern Kingdoms.
Malygos's long-held suspicion that allowing mortals to wield magic was a catastrophic error solidified into a conviction. A dangerous idea took root in his ancient heart: mortals wielding magic brought only destruction, threatening to unravel Azeroth itself. As the guardian of magic, its protector, he had to intervene, to prohibit mortal magic and dismantle all their arcane creations.
"Lord Malygos!"
The Blue Dragon Aspect's thunderous roar drew his most devoted followers: Eregos, guardian of the magic weave; Cyanigosa, his confidante; Tyri, the blue dragon princess; and the blue dragon elites Kalecgos, Tyregosa, and Matrigosa. These were the brightest stars of the Blue Dragonflight, young dragons hatched from eggs saved by the red dragons during the War of the Ancients, considered the second generation. Responding to their Aspect's urgent summons, they swiftly gathered in the Nexus's core.
"What was that tremor in the magic weave just now!" Malygos's roar echoed with displeasure at Eregos. The blue dragons below had also sensed the magical disturbance, though not with Malygos's acute sensitivity.
"Your Majesty…" Eregos's draconic eyes flickered. "According to the whelps patrolling Coldarra's outskirts, a colossal floating city has been teleported to the eastern coast!"
"A floating city?" Malygos was taken aback. "The undead?"
"It seems not, Your Majesty!" Cyanigosa interjected. "My agents within the human settlements report the city was constructed by humans. Judging by its architecture, I suspect it is the rebuilt Dalaran!"
"Roar!" The Blue Dragon Aspect erupted in fury. "They dared to teleport an entire city!"
If magical energy was akin to blood, then the magic weave was the intricate network of veins and arteries. A mage's teleportation spells involved traversing this network. Normally, moving a few individuals or even a legion was like a minor flow change, a slight pressure on the magical arteries, but manageable. Teleporting an entire city, however, was an entirely different matter – akin to forcing a massive blood clot through the entire circulatory system, from the extremities to the brain. Even the most seasoned healer would despair.
"Damn mortal races!" A chaotic energy coalesced on Malygos's brow, assaulting his already fragile sanity. "The Blue Dragonflight will declare war on Dalaran, on all wielders of magic in Azeroth! The magic weave's energy can only be entrusted to the Blue Dragonflight!"
(lol prepare to join the golden dragonflight)
"As you command, Your Majesty!" Eregos and Cyanigosa, unwavering in their loyalty, immediately affirmed their support.
"Your Majesty, I believe this decision is too rash," Kalecgos interjected, his voice measured. "The magic weave's energy belongs to all living beings on Azeroth. Our Blue Dragonflight's role is to safeguard it, ensuring its use remains within reasonable bounds." Kalecgos, a wise and thoughtful dragon, recognized the imprudence of Malygos's decree. Firstly, the Blue Dragonflight was the weakest of the five, even more diminished than the universally reviled Black Dragonflight (unaware of their near extinction). Secondly, Dalaran was a key member of the Alliance, who had come to Northrend to combat the undead. Declaring war on Dalaran was effectively declaring war on the entire Alliance. Malygos, isolated within the Nexus, was oblivious to the Alliance's strength, but Kalecgos, who often observed the mortal races, understood their formidable power, especially the elite Argent Crusade stationed at Valiance Keep.
"Safeguard? Monitor?" Malygos scoffed. "When I chose to monitor them millennia ago, when I allowed the high elves to establish the Sunwell, they took it upon themselves to pass magic onto humans! I have had enough!" With a powerful beat of his wings, Malygos surged from his lair. Cyanigosa and Eregos exchanged a look and followed swiftly, leaving Kalecgos and the blue dragonesses looking at each other with growing alarm.
"No, we must stop Lord Malygos's reckless actions!" Kalecgos exclaimed, his voice urgent. "Behind the Argent Crusade stands the human Guardian Aegwynn, a seasoned powerhouse, a mage whose power rivals that of a demigod!" The young blue dragons struggled to comprehend the gravity of the situation, their Aspect having been too long sequestered within the Nexus, utterly detached from the mortal world's current state. Malygos had encountered Galen and knew some mortals could withstand a Dragon Aspect's might, but he was ignorant of Aegwynn, the legendary Guardian of Tirisfal who had risen to prominence in recent centuries – a being rumored to dispatch demons with a mere flick of her wrist, a fate likely shared by any blue dragon foolish enough to cross her. While young blue dragons like Tyregosa and Matrigosa were maturing, the Blue Dragonflight still lacked significant high-end combat power, relying almost entirely on Malygos. A war now would decimate their fragile resurgence.
"I will seek aid from the other dragonflights!" Kalecgos finally declared. Tyregosa and the other blue dragons agreed. After a hurried discussion, they decided Kalecgos would seek out the Red Dragonqueen, Tyregosa would appeal to the Green Dragonflight, Matrigosa would seek the Bronze Dragonflight's intervention, and Tyri would remain in the Nexus as a liaison, ready to respond to any immediate crisis. Kalecgos soared from the Nexus, his flight path aimed directly towards the Ruby and Emerald Dragonshrines in Dragonblight.
Galen, anticipating that Dalaran's levitation and teleportation would provoke the Blue Dragon Aspect, had factored this into his plans. The moment Kalecgos departed Coldarra, his every movement was already under the watchful eyes of the Argent Crusade. Galen held a particular interest in this "rising star" of the Blue Dragonflight
