Chapter 29 - Board Member Caught

Logan started reading through the first stage of the Flaming Body once again. This time, he didn't skim through it and made sure to read every single line on the page.

'So I'm supposed to let my fire mana burn within my body,' Logan thought. 'It says here that it'll cause extreme pain until my body's resistance to fire is high enough.'

'Haven't I pretty much already done this?' Logan wondered. 'During my breakthrough, my fire mana went through my entire body and improved it.'

'I guess I haven't done it actively or just within my control in general.'

Walking to his training room, Logan sat down cross-legged in the center.

'I'll try to mimic the feeling I had during my breakthrough,' he decided. 'But this time I have to contain it so nothing leaks to the outside.'

He knew the last part would be the difficult part. He didn't think his control was good enough to keep everything within his body. But that didn't mean he wouldn't try.

'I have to train my control one way or another,' Logan thought, smiling. 'This could be considered swatting two flies in one go.'

Concentrating, Logan focused on his affinity.

He let the mana flow through the regular mana channels in his body. From there, Logan focused, pushing the mana out of their channels and letting it spread through his body.

The mana went through his veins first, causing his skin to glow with a faint red light. Only feeling a slight ache, Logan pushed through and guided the mana into his muscles. This time, Logan felt his muscles tense up and fully energized.

Before he could spread it to the rest of his organs, Logan felt his mana rapidly leaving his body.

'I can't control it,' he thought, frowning.

His mana had started leaving his body through the many mana channels in his body, even the mana in his veins and skin slowly dissipated into the outside world.

Trying to regain control over his mana, Logan forgot to keep supplying more, ending the practice altogether.

"That's quite difficult," Logan muttered, standing up.

His body ached from the stress, but unlike what the manual had described, he hadn't felt any immense pain.

"My affinity really did a great job on improving my body's fire mana resistance," Logan said, smiling.

"Seems like I'll have to wait until tomorrow before I can try again though," he said, standing up.

The next six weeks passed by in a blur, with Logan training during the day and signing documents at night.

Currently, Logan and Silas stood face to face in the training room, each holding a weapon.

"Are you ready, Logan?" Silas asked, holding a training sword.

"Sure am," Logan said, grinning wildly.

Slowly, the color of Logan's skin changed, shining a red light.

Raising the glaive in his hand slightly, Logan dashed forward.

Silas didn't move, waiting patiently for Logan to close the distance.

Finally having closed the distance, Logan swung his glaive towards Silas's side.

Stepping aside, Silas swung his sword against the glaive's shaft, bouncing it up.

Letting one hand go of the glaive, Logan shot two fireballs towards Silas to cover his wide-open left side.

"Good choice," Silas said, taking a step back to avoid the fireballs.

Logan didn't respond. Instead, he gripped the end of his glaive with both hands and brought it down with all his strength.

Seeing this, Silas leaned forward and kicked himself off the ground, delivering a punch straight into Logan's stomach.

Despite reeling inside, Logan tried to twist his body sideways. But it was too late, Silas already held a sword against his back.

"You are getting better," Silas said, lowering his sword as he walked away.

"Thanks," Logan said, still coughing from the blow to his stomach as he sat down.

"I think you'll do just fine on the assessment in two weeks," Silas continued, using his wind affinity to lift both training weapons off the ground and put them back in the weapons rack.

Logan took a sip of the hydration liquid before turning back to Silas.

"What about that dungeon you wanted me to do?" Logan asked, curious.

"I've found one you should be able to handle alone," Silas answered. "You'll be heading to a dungeon where only common F and E-rank creatures reside."

"But don't underestimate them even if you're in a body suit," he added. "It could become dangerous if you get them all grouped up."

Logan nodded seriously. He had no plans to act recklessly and bring himself into trouble.

Before Logan and Silas could continue their conversation, Logan heard a beep coming from his watch.

"Oh, Edric's here," he said, standing up. "Just a second, I'll have to open the door."

"I'll sit down in the living room," Silas gave a small nod, smiling.

Opening his door, Logan found Edric outside, holding a stack of papers.

"Good to see you Edric," Logan said, quickly letting him in.

"I've got news that requires your immediate attention," Edric said, a serious expression on his face.

"What's going on?" Logan asked, closing the door behind him.

"An initial report of the investigation came back," Edric said, placing a small stack of papers on the living room table.

"And the results we were hoping for, were found," he continued.

"Two weeks ago, they found an important clue linked to one of the board members," Edric said, pulling forward a piece of paper. "After they found one of his shell companies, it led to a domino effect."

"And now they have conclusive proof of embezzlements up to 268 million dollars, spread out over a time period of seven years."

"Damn," Silas commented from the couch. "For that long?"

Logan sat in silence, looking at the paper.

"Very well," Logan said, nodding. "Who among the board members was the one to do this?"

"It was the middle-aged man with gray hair who scoffed at you when you spoke of the internal investigation," Edric said. "His name is Harold Leyvex, the head of personnel, in charge of hiring and internal regulations."

Logan remained quiet, giving a small nod while his mind worked on a response.

'There's two options,' Logan thought. 'Either I fire him or I wait until I gather more proof on the rest of the members.'

"There's only one option then," Logan said, having decided. "I'll fire him tomorrow."
