Chapter 28 - Chapter 28

"Locked out"

Lena walked into Max's house, her heart heavy with emotion. She had been thinking about their argument all day, and she was determined to make things right. She called out to Max, hoping he would hear her and come to talk.

"Max, I'm here. Can we talk?" she said, her voice shaking slightly.

But Max didn't respond. Instead, she heard the sound of footsteps, and then he appeared in the doorway of the sitting room. For a moment, their eyes met, and Lena saw the anger and hurt still simmering beneath the surface.

Without a word, Max turned and walked away, disappearing into his study. Lena heard the door lock behind him, and her heart sank.

"Max, please don't do this," she said, getting up and walking to the study door. "We need to talk. We can't just ignore each other and hope everything goes away."

But there was only silence from the other side of the door. Lena felt tears pricking at the corners of her eyes as she realized Max was shutting her out. She leaned against the door, her body shaking with sobs.

"Why are you doing this, Max?" she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Can't we just talk about this and work things out?"

But the door remained locked, and Max didn't respond. Lena was left standing alone in the hallway, feeling rejected and hurt. She slid down to the floor, her back against the door, and let her tears flow freely.

As she sat there, she wondered if she had been foolish to think they could work through their issues. Maybe Max didn't want to try hard enough. Maybe he didn't love her enough. The thoughts swirled in her head, making her feel more and more despairing.

After what felt like hours, Lena finally got up, her eyes red and puffy from crying. She knew she couldn't stay there, not when Max was refusing to talk to her. She would have to leave and come back another day, hoping that Max would be more willing to listen then. With a heavy heart, she turned and walked away, leaving the locked door and the silence behind.

As Lena walked out of Max's house, she felt a mix of emotions: sadness, frustration, and uncertainty. She didn't know what the future held for their relationship, but she knew she couldn't keep going on like this. She got into her car and drove away, tears streaming down her face as she thought about the locked door and Max's silence.

When she got home, Lena went straight to her room, feeling exhausted and drained. She collapsed onto her bed, letting out a deep sigh as she buried her face in her pillow. She didn't know how to fix things with Max, or if she even could.

As she lay there, Lena's mind kept replaying the argument and the hurtful words they had said to each other. She wondered if they were just too different, if their relationship was doomed from the start. The thought sent a pang of sadness through her chest, and she felt tears welling up in her eyes again.

Just as she was drifting off to sleep, Lena's phone buzzed with a text message from an unknown number. She hesitated for a moment before picking it up, hoping it might be Max reaching out to apologize. But when she looked at the screen, she saw a message from a friend she hadn't talked to in a while.

"Hey Lena, how's it going?" the message read. "I've been thinking about you lately and wanted to catch up. Let's grab coffee soon?"

Lena smiled slightly, feeling a glimmer of hope. Maybe talking to her friend would help take her mind off things with Max. She quickly typed out a response, agreeing to meet up soon. As she drifted off to sleep, she felt a small sense of comfort, knowing she had someone to talk to who might be able to offer some perspective on her situation.

The next day, Lena met her friend, Rachel, at a cozy coffee shop in town. Over steaming cups of coffee, Lena poured out her heart about the argument with Max and how he had shut her out.

Rachel listened attentively, her expression sympathetic. "I'm so sorry, Lena. That sounds really tough. What do you think is going on with Max?"

Lena sighed, feeling a mix of emotions. "I don't know. I think he's just stressed about the wedding and feeling overwhelmed. But it feels like he's pushing me away, and it's hard not to take it personally."

Rachel nodded understandingly. "It's natural to feel that way. But maybe you should try talking to him again, calmly and rationally. Sometimes guys need a little space, but that doesn't mean they're not willing to work through things."

Lena considered Rachel's words, feeling a glimmer of hope. Maybe Rachel was right; maybe Max just needed some time to cool off. She made a mental note to try reaching out to him again, to see if they could find a way to move forward.

As they chatted, Lena felt a weight lifting off her shoulders. Talking to Rachel had helped her gain some perspective, and she felt more hopeful about her situation with Max.

But just as they were about to part ways, Lena's phone buzzed with a text from Max. Her heart skipped a beat as she read the message: "We need to talk about the wedding venue. Meet me there at 5 pm today."

Lena felt a surge of mixed emotions. Part of her was relieved that Max was reaching out, but another part of her was wary. Was this about the wedding, or was it about them? She looked at Rachel, unsure of what to do.

"What do I do?" she asked, feeling torn.

Rachel smiled encouragingly. "Go, and see what's on his mind. Maybe this is the opportunity you need to talk things through."

Lena nodded, feeling a sense of determination. She would go to the wedding venue and talk to Max, no matter what. She texted him back, confirming that she would meet him at 5 pm.

As she parted ways with Rachel, Lena felt a sense of nervous anticipation. What would Max say to her? Would they be able to work through their issues, or would things be too damaged?

The rest of the day flew by in a blur as Lena's mind wandered to the upcoming meeting with Max. She couldn't help but wonder what he wanted to discuss, and whether it would be about the wedding or their relationship.

When 5 pm rolled around, Lena arrived at the wedding venue, her heart racing with anticipation. Max was already there, standing outside the entrance, looking handsome but serious.

"Hey," he said, nodding at her as she approached.

"Hey," Lena replied, feeling a little shy.

Without a word, Max turned and walked inside the venue, expecting Lena to follow. She did, her eyes adjusting to the dimmer lighting inside.

As they walked through the empty halls, Lena couldn't help but think about their wedding day, and how they would stand together in this very spot, promising to love and cherish each other. But for now, the tension between them was palpable.

Max stopped in front of a large window, looking out at the view. "I wanted to talk to you about the wedding," he said, his voice neutral.

Lena's heart sank, wondering if this was just about the wedding, or if there was more to it. "Okay," she said, waiting for him to continue.

"I've been thinking a lot about the guest list," Max said, his eyes still fixed on the view outside. "And I was wondering if we could compromise on the number. I know your family is big, and you want them all to be there, but...I just don't know if it's feasible."

Lena felt a surge of frustration, wondering why Max was still harping on about the guest list. "We've been over this, Max. My family is important to me, and I want them there. Can't we just make it work?"

Max turned to face her, his expression serious. "Lena, I want to make it work too. But we need to be realistic about our budget. And another thing, I've been thinking about the food and drinks...maybe we could have it catered instead of having your aunt do it."

Lena's face fell, feeling like Max was dismissing her family's contribution. "Why are you bringing this up now? We already discussed this, and my aunt is happy to help out."

Max took a step closer to her, his voice softening. "I know, Lena. But I just want to make sure everything is perfect for our special day. And I think catering might be a better option."

Lena felt a pang of hurt, wondering if Max was questioning her family's abilities. "My aunt is a great cook, Max. And she's doing it out of love for us. Can't we just trust her to handle it?"

The conversation was starting to feel like a familiar argument, and Lena wondered if they would ever see eye-to-eye on these details.

As they stood there, the tension between them grew thicker than ever. Max's suggestion about catering had somehow triggered a deeper issue, and Lena felt herself getting defensive.

"You know, Max, it's not just about the food," she said, her voice rising. "It's about the fact that you're always questioning my family's contributions. You're always finding fault in what they do, and it's starting to feel like you don't value our relationship."

Max's expression turned defensive. "That's not fair, Lena. I'm just trying to make sure everything is perfect for our wedding."

"Perfect for your vision of our wedding, you mean," Lena shot back. "You're always trying to control every little detail, and it's suffocating me. Can't you just trust me and my family to handle some things?"

The argument escalated, with both of them saying things they didn't mean. The air was electric with tension, and it seemed like the smallest spark could set off a huge explosion.

"You know, maybe we're just not on the same page here," Max said, his voice cold. "Maybe we want different things from this wedding, and from our relationship."

Lena felt a pang of fear at his words. Was Max saying what she thought he was saying? Was he questioning their entire relationship? "What are you trying to say, Max?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

But before Max could respond, Lena's phone rang, shrill in the silence. She hesitated for a moment before answering it, her heart sinking as she listened to the voice on the other end.

"I'm so sorry, Max," Lena said, her voice apologetic. "I need to go. It's my mom, she's in the hospital. I have to get there as soon as possible."

Max's expression softened, and he took a step towards her. "Oh no, Lena, I'm so sorry. Of course, you need to go. Do you want me to come with you?"

Lena hesitated for a moment, unsure if she wanted Max to come with her right now. But then she nodded, feeling a sense of gratitude towards him. "Yeah, that would be great. Thank you."

As they rushed out of the venue, Lena's mind was racing with worry about her mom. What had happened? Was she okay? She pushed the thoughts aside and focused on getting to the hospital as quickly as possible.

The drive was silent, with both of them lost in their own thoughts. Lena's anxiety was growing by the minute, and she couldn't help but wonder what she would find when she got to the hospital.

When they arrived, Lena rushed to her mom's room, Max following closely behind. She was relieved to see her mom sitting up in bed, looking a bit pale but otherwise okay.

"Mom, what happened?" Lena asked, rushing to her side.

Her mom smiled weakly. "Just a minor accident, sweetie. I'm fine. Don't worry about me."

Lena felt a wave of relief wash over her, but it was quickly replaced by concern. "What kind of accident?"

Her mom hesitated before answering. "I fell down the stairs. But like I said, I'm fine. Just a few bruises."

Lena's eyes narrowed. Something didn't feel right. She turned to Max, who was standing quietly in the corner of the room. "Can you wait outside for a minute? I need to talk to my mom alone."

Max nodded and stepped out of the room, leaving Lena to talk to her mom in private.

As soon as Max left the room, Lena turned to her mom with a concerned expression. "Mom, what really happened? You can tell me the truth."

Her mom hesitated, looking around the room nervously. "Okay, fine. I didn't exactly fall down the stairs. I had a bit of a disagreement with your father."

Lena's eyes widened in shock. "A disagreement? What kind of disagreement?"

Her mom sighed, looking tired. "It's just...we've been having some problems, Lena. Your father and I...we're not sure if we can make it work anymore."

Lena felt like she'd been punched in the gut. Her parents were getting a divorce? She couldn't believe it. "What? Why? What's going on?"

Just then, the door burst open and Max walked back in, looking angry. "Lena, I don't appreciate being dismissed like that. I thought we were in this together."

Lena turned to him, her own anger simmering just below the surface. "This isn't about you, Max. It's about my family. And right now, my parents are having some problems."

Max's expression turned cold. "Oh, so now you're making excuses for your family's problems? You always do this, Lena. You always put your family's needs before ours."

Lena felt her anger boil over. "That's not true, Max. And even if it was, what's wrong with that? Family is important to me. Unlike some people who only care about themselves."

The argument escalated, with both of them saying hurtful things. The hospital room was filled with tension, and it seemed like the fight was going to get physical.

"You're always so quick to defend your family, but what about defending me?" Max shouted.

"I'm defending myself, Max. Because you're not listening to me. You're not hearing what I need," Lena shot back.

The fight continued, with neither of them willing to back down. It seemed like their relationship was hanging in the balance, and Lena wasn't sure if it could be saved.

The argument ended abruptly when Lena's mom intervened, her voice firm but tired. "That's enough, both of you. This isn't the time or place for this discussion."

Lena and Max stopped arguing, both of them breathing heavily and looking at each other with a mix of anger and hurt. Lena's mom continued, "Lena, I think you should go home and calm down. We'll talk about this later."

Lena nodded, feeling a mix of emotions. She turned to Max and said, "I think we're done here."

Max's expression was still angry, but he nodded curtly. "Fine. Let's go."

The ride home was silent, with both of them lost in their own thoughts. Lena was still reeling from the news about her parents, and the argument with Max had left her feeling drained and uncertain about their relationship.

When they arrived at Lena's house, Max didn't even bother to get out of the car. "I'll talk to you later," he said, his voice cold.

Lena got out of the car, feeling a sense of sadness wash over her. "Maybe we should take some time to think about what we want," she said, looking back at Max.

Max's expression didn't change, but he nodded slightly. "Yeah. Maybe that's a good idea."

Lena watched as Max drove away, feeling a sense of uncertainty about their future together. She took a deep breath and went inside, wondering what the next few days would bring.

Lena went straight to her room, feeling overwhelmed and unsure about what to do next. She lay down on her bed, staring at the ceiling as she replayed the argument with Max in her head.

She couldn't believe how things had escalated so quickly. One minute they were discussing wedding details, and the next they were fighting about their relationship. Lena felt like she was losing control, and she didn't know how to stop it.

As she lay there, Lena's phone buzzed with a text message from Max. "I need some space," he said. "Don't contact me for a few days."

Lena felt a pang of sadness and uncertainty. Was this the end of their relationship? She didn't know what to do, so she did the only thing she could think of - she called her best friend, Rachel.

"Hey, girl," Rachel said, answering on the first ring. "What's going on? You sound upset."

Lena took a deep breath and told Rachel everything - the argument with Max, the news about her parents, and her feelings of uncertainty about the future. Rachel listened attentively, offering words of comfort and support.

"I don't know what to do, Rach," Lena said, feeling tears well up in her eyes. "I feel like everything is falling apart."

Rachel's voice was soothing. "You're going to get through this, Lena. We'll figure it out together. Just take some time to focus on yourself and what you want."

Lena felt a sense of relief wash over her as she talked to Rachel. She realized that she didn't have to have all the answers right now. Sometimes, just talking things through with someone who cared about her was enough.

After hanging up with Rachel, Lena took some time to reflect on her relationship with Max. She thought about the good times they had shared, the laughter, the adventures. But she also thought about the arguments, the disagreements, and the feelings of uncertainty.

As she lay in bed, Lena came to a realization. She deserved better than a relationship that made her feel uncertain and unhappy. She deserved someone who loved and accepted her for who she was, flaws and all. But she loves Max and wouldn't want to leave him

With a newfound sense of clarity, Lena drifted off to sleep, feeling more at peace than she had in days. She knew that tomorrow would bring new challenges, but she was ready to face them head-on.

The next few days passed slowly, with Lena focusing on herself and her own well-being. She spent time with friends, practiced yoga, and worked on her own projects. She didn't contact Max, respecting his boundaries and giving him the space he needed.

As the days went by, Lena felt a sense of growth and self-discovery. She realized that she was stronger than she thought, and that she could handle whatever life threw her way.

And then, on the fourth day, Max texted her. "Can we talk?" he asked.

Lena took a deep breath, feeling a mix of emotions. She wasn't sure what she wanted to say to Max, but she knew she needed to be honest with herself and with him. "Okay," she replied. "When and where?"

The ball was in her court now, and Lena was ready to play.
