Thud.
Crack.
Impact.
Riku landed hard—tumbling through pitch-black stone dust until he finally rolled to a stop in a low-ceilinged chamber. His knees ached, ribs screamed, and a shallow cut on his forehead traced down his cheek like a painted scar.
The darkness pulsed with mana.
He stood, brushing himself off.
[System Alert: You have entered Floor 2 of the Underground Testing Bracket]
[Challenge Type: Timed Puzzle Trial]
[Time Limit: 30 minutes. Failing to exit in time results in… "permanent stagnation."]
Stagnation?
Riku narrowed his eyes.
That wasn't a typical system word. That was deliberate phrasing.

The Clockwork Labyrinth
As faint lights flickered to life above, the room shifted. Walls slid with mechanical groans. Panels realigned. Hallways reshaped themselves with every ten seconds, creating an ever-moving maze of bronze gears and shifting stone.
A voice whispered from nowhere:
"Only the brilliant pass. The foolish become part of the machine."
Riku exhaled slowly.
"System, analyze movement pattern."
[Analyzing… Predictive route forming…]
He broke into a sprint, slipping between two rotating walls just before they slammed shut. Every hallway he passed pulsed with enchantments—some illusion-based, others meant to disorient.
Twice he triggered false floors.
Once, a mist of mana tried to cloud his memory.
But Riku focused.
Not just on moving—but on observing.
The gear turns.
The timing.
The patterns.
Everything clicked.
"System, optimize my neural speed. Use Cognitive Voucher #2."
[Voucher Activated – Neural Focus x3 for 15 minutes]
His pupils contracted.
Time slowed.
The labyrinth became less a challenge… and more a game.

Halfway Point – The Girl in Chains
He reached a chamber unlike the others—metallic and square, with pipes rising toward the ceiling.
And in the middle—
A girl.
Chained to the wall.
She was around his age. Short silver hair clung to her face. Her eyes were shut. Her wrists and ankles bound in glowing manacles. And around her floated a sphere—pulsing every few seconds like a heartbeat.
Riku froze.
"System, scan her."
[Error – Scan Blocked. Identity Obscured by Advanced Seals]
That alone was enough to pique his suspicion.
Why would they leave someone like her here?
Suddenly, her eyes snapped open.
Glowing violet.
"You're not part of the machine," she whispered, voice hoarse. "You're… awake."
Riku stepped closer. "Who are you?"
Her chains rattled. "They call me Subject 09. The faculty don't know I'm here. I'm part of the bracket… but I never asked to be."
She looked directly into his eyes.
"Help me. Please."
Riku hesitated. Traps weren't uncommon. Sympathy was a weapon. But something about her… felt real.
The way her lips trembled.
The way her mana suppressed itself—as if afraid to be noticed.
He walked toward her.
"I'll break the chain seals—"
"No!" she hissed. "Don't touch them directly. They're cursed. They'll latch onto you instead."
Smart.
A fake would have welcomed blind help.
He crouched near her feet and activated a small blade of force.
"System, purchase: Minor Curse Dispeller."
[Purchased – 1,800 Credits]
One by one, he began cutting the seals.
They hissed.
The girl winced, but said nothing.
By the time he freed her last shackle—
BZZZZZT!
The orb above them turned red.
An alarm sounded.
A voice screamed:
"INTERFERENCE DETECTED. TRIAL 2 BREACHED. INITIATING PURGE."
---
The Maze Reactivates
Riku grabbed the girl's hand.
"Run!"
The floor behind them collapsed into spikes. Pipes burst with steam. Metal arms rose from the ground, attempting to pull them back.
"System, summon Step Disk."
A glowing platform launched them over a trap pit. They sprinted, dodged, jumped.
The girl's breathing was heavy, but focused.
"Left!" she shouted. "The door closes every twelve seconds!"
Riku didn't question how she knew.
He just followed.
They dove into the final chamber seconds before the wall slammed shut.

Exit Room – Temporary Safety
Panting, Riku collapsed beside the exit gate.
The girl leaned against the wall, watching him.
"…Why help me?" she finally asked.
"Because you didn't beg. You warned me instead."
She blinked.
"…Most only care about passing."
"I care about surviving."
Her lips twitched into a faint smile.
"I'm Sorin. I was part of a failed project to create 'hybrid combatants'—half mana, half curse. I've been trapped here for over a year. Until today."
Riku stared at her.
So many questions.
So many pieces.
He offered her water from his inventory.
"…I'm Riku Aoyama."
She sipped, and whispered:
"I know."

System Alert
[Stage 2 Complete – Route Breached]
[Optional Save NPC Event: Completed – Unique Ally Gained]
[Reward: Access to Forbidden Skill Shop – Locked Until Floor 3]
[Sorin added to Contacts. Relationship: Wary Trust]
Riku's heart beat faster.
A hybrid project?
An underground testing bracket with "expelled students"?
And now… a locked skill shop?
This place was deeper than he thought.
Much deeper.

Outside – Ayumi's Growing Concern
Ayumi leaned against the academy bulletin board.
No sign of Riku. No announcement. No word.
She narrowed her eyes.
You better not be doing something dangerous without me.
Again.
She clenched her fists.

TL/N:
We introduce Sorin, a mysterious girl from an abandoned magical project. She'll be a recurring ally (and maybe more) depending on Riku's choices.
Ayumi's concern is building steadily, paving the way for emotional and possible confrontational developments.
