Chapter 17 - 17. Beneath Silent Roots

The jungle above still stirred with distant bird cries and rustling leaves, but beneath it, far below the roots, Karl and Robin found themselves in a different world.

The tunnel that opened after Karl's Vault Trial was unlike the crumbling ruin they'd entered before. This place felt alive, almost watchful. Ancient roots ran along the carved stone walls, twisting around glowing veins of crystal embedded deep in the rock.

Karl stepped forward, each motion deliberate. The memory of flame still lingered on his skin, though no burn remained. A heat—no, a resonance—flickered within him. Unyielding Ember. That's what the Vault called it.

He hadn't told Robin yet.

Not about power.

Not about the whispers.

Not about the feeling that the island itself was watching him now.

"I don't think anyone's been down here in centuries," Robin said, kneeling to brush moss from a symbol etched into the floor.

Karl glanced over. The glyph pulsed faintly.

"That doesn't mean we're alone," he muttered.

Robin stood slowly. "Do you feel that too?"

Karl didn't answer—but his eyes scanned the hallway ahead. The roots here weren't like the ones above. They pulsed. They breathed. Like veins.

The deeper they went, the more the atmosphere changed. The stale air grew humid, and dense with an earthy scent. Occasional murmurs drifted from ahead, distant and low, like voices humming through the stone.

Karl stopped.

The system message had flashed silently across his mind, but this one felt different. Stronger. Urgent.

He didn't have time to question it.

Because just ahead, the path split.

One tunnel continued down.

The other… shimmered.

"I'm going left," Robin said, eyes fixed on the downward path. "This looks like it might connect to the island's core ruins."

Karl didn't move.

Something pulled at him, toward the shimmering tunnel to the right. Light twisted at its entrance, refracting unnaturally from the walls.

"Go ahead," he said. "I'll check the other path. We'll rendezvous at the central chamber if we find anything."

Robin frowned. "Split up?"

"I'll be fine."

A pause. Then a reluctant nod.

"Be careful."

"You too."

The tunnel of light twisted into a spiral. With every step, Karl felt his heartbeat syncing with something deeper. His eyes adjusted to the warped light. Stone gave way to root-covered walls. The roots glowed faintly blue now, not from the crystals, but from within themselves.

Then the tunnel opened into a vast chamber.

A single tree stood at the centre. Towering. Monolithic.

Its bark shimmered with metallic hues, and instead of leaves, it bore hanging tendrils of crystal. The air vibrated faintly, like the final note of a song caught in the wind.

And at the base of the tree…

A cocoon.

Half-submerged in the roots.

Inside, something moved.

He opened his system menu.

The ember in his chest flared—and for a moment, he felt nothing but searing clarity.

The roots reacted.

The cocoon stirred.

And then—it opened.

From within emerged a being not made of flesh but of woven root and crystal. Eyes of glowing azure. Limbs are tall and lithe. It regarded Karl with something almost… familiar.

"Bearer of the Flame", it said. Its voice vibrated the chamber.

"I didn't come to fight," Karl said, hands open.

"You bear what was stolen," it replied, motioning to the relic at his hip.

Karl stepped back. "Then take it—if you can."

The entity moved.

Fast.

Karl surged forward with fists ablaze—Unyielding Ember now fused and roaring to life. He ducked a sweep of crystal-bladed roots and countered with a flurry of enhanced strikes.

The air shimmered with energy.

The Warden responded with a stomp—roots erupting from beneath. Karl backflipped, launching a kick that cracked the Warden's chest, sending shards flying.

The creature roared—and the chamber itself moved. Roots slammed into walls, sealing exits.

No escape.

Good.

Karl smiled.

Minutes passed.

Then silence.

Karl stood over the defeated Warden as it disintegrated into dust and root ash.

At the centre, a single item hovered.

Karl exhaled slowly. The chamber grew still once more.

Then—the sound of stone shifting.

A panel slid open across the chamber floor, revealing a set of stairs spiralling even deeper.

Karl paused at the top.

"Whatever's down there…" he murmured. "I'll be ready."

He descended.

Elsewhere

Robin sprinted through vine-covered halls, a small journal in hand.

"The symbols match the ones on Ohara's eastern ruins," she whispered. "This confirms it… This entire island is a split node of an ancient archive—buried to protect the Vault."

A crash echoed behind her.

Robin turned.

Shuzo's mercenaries.

Too close.

She ran again, toward where Karl would emerge.

Because they'd just stepped into a war far bigger than they knew.
