Chapter 26 - 26 Old John story

Elfa waved his hand and cut off the squirming fleshy worm in front of him. It was a purple-blue worm, as thick as an adult's thigh and as long as an average human. As its body was broken, a lot of yellow pus splashed out, and the pus fell on Elfa's protective fighting spirit, hissing and smoking.

"The blood of these creatures can actually dissolve the fighting spirit. I haven't recovered much fighting spirit to begin with. I don't know how much I will have left after completing this journey." Leaning against the left side of Elfa, Randy smiled bitterly.

"Me too." Leaning against Elfa's right side, Matar frowned.

Following behind them were members of the mercenary group who also followed their example and formed groups of three, killing their way forward. Due to their tacit cooperation, they did not lose any members, but they were all clearly exhausted.

"Everyone, hold on a little longer, we're almost there." Looking at the Earl's Mansion that was showing from afar, Elfa's voice became excited.

Hearing this news, the people following behind were motivated and continued to kill insects. Although the closer they got to the Earl's Mansion, the more insects there were, but with this little bit of spirit support, they finally chopped and killed all the way, and arrived at the Earl's Mansion after stopping and starting.

The people inside saw the reinforcements coming and hurriedly opened the door to welcome them in. Although some poisonous insects took advantage of the door to get into the Earl's Mansion, they were quickly chopped into pieces.

"You are finally here!" The captain of the guard was very excited. After just few days, this originally energetic soldier became red-eyed, pale-faced, with a large patch of white hair, and looked extremely haggard.

"Is Count Martin okay?" Randy asked.

"The count is fine. He is inside. I will take you in to see him."

"You call me a coward, you bastards, without me, you will die!" Roger was indignant and threw a pile of gold coins on the gambling table. "I don't know if Lilith has woken up. It's really boring to be alone."

Although the blow Lilith used to kill Kogas seemed to be a light blow, it actually took all the strength of the little succubus to instantly break the swordsman's fighting spirit defense and kill him. Therefore, she said hello to Roger before he went to the Marquis's Mansion, and now she is hiding somewhere to sleep.

Roger was bored as he watched the gold coins he betted being slowly collected by the dealer.

"What's so fun about this..."

His thoughts drifted, as if he had returned to the past, when he was in his early teens and Old John brought him to the casino for the first time.

"Teacher, what's the fun of gambling?" Roger complained to John while chewing his bread. As soon as this guy entered the city, he found a gambling house and lost all the money they had just earned from the commissions.

If Roger hadn't secretly hidden a few gold coins, they wouldn't even have food to eat now. Now, there's no need to think about roast chicken or beef. Just having bread to eat is good enough.

"Alas, you don't understand." Old John rubbed his red nose and grinned, revealing his dark yellow teeth. "People have to gamble, or they will regret it someday."

"Why? To gamble?"

"Want to know?" Old John pointed at the loaf of bread Roger was holding in his arms, "Give me some."

Little Roger broke off a piece for him. Old John took it, took a big bite, and chewed it in big mouthfuls.

"I used to have a wife who was also an adventurer. She came from the Freelands and was a hot-tempered ranger. Her archery skills were amazing and she was very famous among adventurers. Her breasts were round and firm, and her butt was firm. It was so pleasant to fuck her in...."

"Just to pick out the important points..." Roger's face was full of black lines, and he almost couldn't resist the urge to throw the remaining bread in his hand at his face.

"Ahem." Old John said seriously, "Once, we accepted a mission to annihilate bandits. We quietly followed the bandits who blocked our way and destroyed their lair. We thought they were just a bunch of rabble, but we didn't expect that the leader of the bandits was actually a sixth-level swordsman. At that time, she and I were only fourth-level. Although we killed most of the bandits under their siege, we were still no match for them. I escaped, but she was caught because of her injured foot and couldn't run fast."

"And then?"

"Later. Haha." Old John showed an awkward smile on his face. "Later, I sneaked back again. What a coincidence, I just saw them r*ping my wife. The bandit leader was lying on top her, shaking and beating her. Although she was cursing loudly below, her hands and feet were tied, so he could do whatever he wanted."

"I wanted to save her, and I thought of a hundred ways, but every one of them was rejected by me. I felt that I had to find a way that would definitely succeed. After a while, she was strangled to death by the bandit leader before I could actually do something. Those beasts killed a person, but they were still laughing there."

"I was furious at the time, and I jumped out of the darkness and killed the sixth-level bandit leader with a sword. Now I still remember that the long sword went straight through his throat, and blood splattered all over me. The rest of the bandits were all gone, and I killed them all."

"If you had jumped out earlier and killed him with a sword, your wife wouldn't have died."

"Yes, but when I was hiding in the dark, I didn't know whether this sword could kill the opponent. I didn't dare to take this gamble, and it became the most regrettable gamble in my life."

"Although the story is a bit sad." Roger nodded while chewing on the bread, "But what does this have to do with your love of gambling?"

"Bang!"

Roger was hit hard on the top of his head, and the pain almost made him cry. He covered his head and screamed.

"You little brat, can you actually accept my teachings? You always ask questions that hurt everyone's feelings. Your level of understanding is shameful."

Old John withdrew his hand and looked up at the starry sky again.

"I want to tell you that when you feel that something is worth protecting, don't always shrink back. There is no perfect method in this world, no plan that will definitely succeed. Many times you have to gamble. As long as you think it is right and worth it, you have to gamble. Otherwise, you will definitely regret it. Regret it very much..."
