Chapter 28 - Chapter 27: To Control the Board

The rain had stopped, but the clouds hadn't cleared.

Veronica stood at the school gates of Elite High, her presence cutting through the sea of students like a blade through silk.

The world around her had shifted—but it didn't know it yet.

Not fully.

The whispers had already begun.

"She wasn't like this before."

"Did you hear about the dock incident?"

"She walked away from a sniper shot. Who even does that?"

"Did she dye her hair darker? Or is that just her aura?"

Veronica strode forward without looking left or right. Every heel-click echoed like a war drum on marble tiles. Her posture was calm, almost bored, but her gaze—sharp as a scalpel—missed nothing.

Behind the murmurs, behind the wide-eyed glances and parted lips, behind the camera phones subtly lifted under sleeves—there was something else now.

Fear.

Not just jealousy. Not just awe.

But that silent, crawling fear that only appears when a sheep realizes the lion has been living among them.

Veronica Lin wasn't the same Amy Lin who'd stumbled through these gates a month ago.

And some of them were finally starting to realize it.

Lucas stood by the rooftop railing, his hands braced against the metal as he watched the courtyard below.

From this high up, Veronica looked like a piece of war sculpted from grace. Untouchable. Calculated. Dangerous.

He hadn't said more than ten words to her since the night of the warehouse.

And the confession.

Lucien Kaelari.

His real name still felt like ash on his tongue.

He knew what his silence would do. She wasn't the kind of woman to tolerate emotional withdrawal or half-buried truths. But Lucas couldn't bring himself to cross that threshold again.

Not yet.

Not when everything inside him was clawing with conflict.

His duty to the Court.

His betrayal of it.

His need to protect her at any cost.

And the creeping certainty that someone—some thing—was using Alexis Wu as a pawn.

Veronica entered her private lounge in the student council building, the door snapping shut behind her like the lock on a vault.

The windows were tinted. Soundproofed. Safe.

Waiting inside, sitting casually on the armrest of a leather couch, was a man whose presence filled the room like silent thunder.

Nathaniel Lin.

Her eldest brother.

Impeccably dressed in a charcoal suit with no tie, his hair tousled with deliberate carelessness, he looked more like a tech mogul than a former military strategist. But behind the easy smile and charming smirk, Veronica saw the weapon he truly was.

And he was watching her like a general assessing his equal.

"Took you long enough," Nathaniel said mildly.

"You took the long way through Europe," Veronica countered, walking straight to the hidden bar and pouring herself a glass of chilled water. "I had a war to fight. What's your excuse?"

"Espionage, blackmail, and bankrupting an old French bastard who thought I couldn't." He flashed her a lazy grin. "Family business."

A beat.

Then—

"I heard about Alexis," he added, tone shifting subtly.

"She's safe," Veronica said. "For now."

Nathaniel reached into the inner pocket of his jacket and pulled out a slim silver flash drive. He didn't hand it over immediately.

"I tapped one of Serena Lang's shell accounts," he said. "Routed through offshore crypto wallets, but I traced them back. Movements started spiking right before your... 'return.'"

Veronica held out her hand.

Nathaniel hesitated.

Then he gave it to her.

"Be careful what you wish for, Amy," he said softly. "Some things don't just bite. They eat."

Veronica pocketed the drive without flinching.

"I'm not afraid of what bites," she said. "I am what bites."

It was late afternoon when Veronica locked herself in the secure student council IT room—only three people in the school even knew it existed, and one of them was her.

The lights were off.

Only the glow of multiple screens lit the space, casting a blue hue over her sharp features.

She plugged in the drive.

Her fingers flew across the keyboard.

And the interface that bloomed onto the main screen wasn't from any ordinary system.

It was black. Angular. With cascading green runes forming a lotus.

The Black Lotus Protocol.

A legacy from her past life. One of the most untraceable, encrypted hacking interfaces ever built. She'd designed it with her former underboss, code-named Mirror, to be used only if the queen ever fell.

Her smile was razor-thin as the system lit up.

Welcome back, Queen.

She typed in her passphrase manually:

"Reborn in fire. Crowned in ash."

The interface opened like the petals of a lotus.

Three categories blinked:

ACCOUNT MOVEMENTS

CONTACT TRACES

CLASSIFIED ENCRYPTED

She clicked the third one.

It prompted a second password.

She entered a different one—Amy's mother's favorite flower. A nod to the girl whose body she now inhabited.

Accepted.

A single file appeared.

Titled:

"Alexis Wu – Insurance Asset // Priority Level: Crown Court"

Veronica froze.

Her heart didn't skip.

It stilled.

There was no accident, no random targeting.

Alexis hadn't been a mistake.

She was a lever.

A trigger.

An asset.

Her hand hovered over the mouse.

Before she could open it—

A secondary alert flashed across the screen.

"Unauthorized trace detected."

Veronica swore and yanked the drive out, slamming the system into lockdown.

A whisper of static crawled through the speakers—faint, deliberate.

And then—

A voice.

"You've awakened the board, Queen. Let's play."

The screen blinked once.

Then shut itself off.

Complete blackout.

Veronica sat still, breath shallow, heart thunderous.

Whoever they were—whoever had access to that file—they were already watching.

Already reacting.

And the game?

Had just begun.

On the rooftop, Lucas's phone buzzed.

A single text message. Encrypted. Ghost Court seal embedded.

He opened it.

And read:

"Target 'Wu' classified under Priority Black. Infiltration failed. Queen Lin has engaged Black Lotus Protocol.

Stand by for next directive.

— The Council"

Lucas closed his eyes.

Pain twisted behind them.

Veronica had stepped fully onto the board.

And she didn't know who—or what—was coming next.

Meanwhile…

Inside a darkened room in an old estate in Europe, Serena stood before her father.

A map sprawled across the desk. Pins. Threads. Photos.

Veronica's face was circled in red.

Next to it—a freshly added line connected her to Alexis Wu.

Serena tapped her fingers on the wood.

"She's smarter than expected," she said coldly. "The Black Lotus system reactivated."

Her father lit a cigar, smoke curling through the golden light of the chandelier.

"Then the clock starts now," he said.

"Let's see how long her little kingdom stands without knowing who built the board beneath her feets

Veronica has just discovered Alexis is labeled an "Insurance Asset" under the Court's classified system—and a trace confirms someone is watching her. Lucas receives a direct order from the Court, while Serena's father officially begins Judgment Protocol.
