Chapter 9 - The Fire Beneath Her Smile

Lucien Roth was not an easy man to fool, but Luna had learned how to wear masks better than anyone.

The morning after her discovery, she went about her duties gracefully and happily ,she wore her sweetest smile and served breakfast like nothing had changed. Her uniform was perfect, her hair pinned neatly, her posture graceful. To the world, she was a maid. To Lucien, she was an interesting one.

"Coffee, sir?"

Lucien looked up from the newspaper. His tie was still loose, his dark hair damp from a recent shower. He nodded, a faint smirk curling his lips. "You always remember how I take it."

"Of course."

He watched her for a second longer than usual. Luna held his gaze, then lowered her eyes like a good servant. He didn't see the fire behind them.

She retreated to the kitchen, her hands already itching to return to her room. To the laptop. To the evidence. But patience, she reminded herself, was part of the war. She shouldn't be in a rush, she needs to calm down and thread carefully to avoid making brutal mistakes that will jinx her mission.

She needed more.

Later that day, she began slipping into the restricted rooms. The west wing housed the administrative offices, Lucien's father's domain. Guards came and went, but she had learned the shift rotations. She used the laundry cart as cover, slipping in while the head of security took his usual 3:15 break.

Inside, she found documents linking the Lee Corporation to shell companies, many that connected to the black folder she'd found. There were coded logs of off-record shipments and multiple aliases for Lucien's uncle.

She took photos of everything.

In the main office, a framed photo of the Roth family mocked her. Lucien's father stood tall, expression unreadable, his mother sitting gracefully as the madam of the household and next to her, Lucien, arms crossed, smile faint.

Did he know? She couldn't stop asking that.

That night, Lucien caught her off guard. She was walking down the hall when he appeared, leaning against the marble banister like he belonged to the shadows.

"You're not just a maid," he said.

Luna's breath caught. Her face betrayed nothing.

"I beg your pardon, sir?"

"You watch everything. You don't gossip. You don't ask stupid questions. And you move like someone trained."

Luna tilted her head slightly. "Should I take that as a compliment or a threat?"

He stepped closer, eyes narrowing. "You intrigue me. That's all."

She smiled coolly. "Good. Intrigue keeps people alive."

Their eyes met, something shifted.

Back in her room, Luna updated her map.

A new name had emerged from the files: Michael Gross, a former Roth employee fired just weeks before her brother's death. And then he disappeared.

She printed his photo. She needed to find him because he might be the link she needed.

Lucien was getting suspicious. She had to move carefully.

But she had already come too far to stop.

In the quiet of the night, Luna stared at her growing wall of evidence. The web was tightening.

Her fingers brushed over her brother's photo.

"I'm close, Dave, I swear."

And somewhere down the hall, Lucien Lee stared at his reflection, the unease in his chest growing. Something wasn't right.

And it had everything to do with the girl who served his coffee with a smile. The girl that's occupying his mind , how dare she make the great Lucien Roth lose focus at work, just who's she?

Luna in her room thought about her whole mission, she needs to find the Micheal of a man and to do that, she needs to leave the mansion and she needs to find a tangible reason for leaving the mansion, she thought long and hard on an excuse.

Then she suddenly remembered that she promised to visit her mum and she's yet to fulfill that promise.

'Great! Just Great' she has found a perfect excuse.

But before she'll go out, she needs to be able to figure out his location and she also doesn't know whether he's still alive.

She sighed, she needs to calm down, no need to rush , slow and steady wins the race.
