Chapter 42: The Distant Wail and the Echo at the Crossroads
While enveloped in the peaceful energy of the Heart of Life, the distress call that had descended into Kael's mind through the Chitauri core had been like a block of ice. The images and sounds were not clear; rather, they were the overwhelming echoes of intense fear, despair, and impending doom. But Kael recognized the source of these echoes: Earth. The chaotic, chaotic, yet still "home" planet he had left behind. Perhaps Fisk had made an unexpected move, or perhaps the Nova Corps' presence on Earth had caused new problems in the wake of the Chaos Echo. Or worse, the last members of the small Echo he had left behind were paying a price in his absence.
This unexpected signal created a sharp conflict within Kael between his newly awakened cosmic responsibility and his deep-rooted ties to his past. On the one hand, there was his duty to strengthen the Great Seal to maintain the balance of the universe; The Heart of Life was a vital part of this mission, and as the Guardians of the Forest had noted, a critical line of defense against the infiltration of the Lords of the Void. On the other hand, there were people who were perhaps in danger, perhaps a past for which he still felt some sense of responsibility.
Aslan approached him with concern, noticing the sudden change in Kael's face and the restless energy emanating from the Chitauri core. "Kael? What happened? That… what was that signal?"
Kael took a deep breath. "From Earth," he said simply. "There is a problem. A big problem."
The leader of the Guardians of the Forest regarded Kael with wise eyes. "Echo Bearer," he said in his mental voice. "I feel your heart being torn in two. Your destiny has brought you here. The Heart of Life needs you. If this seal is weakened, the darkness of the Void could swallow not just this world, but countless worlds."
"I know," Kael said, his voice filled with ambiguity. "But… there may be lives out there that need protecting too."
Aslan touched Kael's shoulder. "Kael," he said. "Whatever you decide, I am with you. But remember, you are no longer just a man. The burden you carry is much greater." Aslan's words were both encouragement and warning. He too missed Earth, but he knew the seriousness of Kael's mission.
Kael closed his eyes for a moment. In his mind, the chaos of New York, Fisk's shadow, those early days of the Echo, and now this sacred mission beyond the stars... All of them clashed. The Chitauri core pulsed unsteadily in his palm, drawn to the energy of the Heart of Life and responding to the urgent call for help from Earth.
"Guardians of the Forest," Kael said, opening his eyes. "How long will it take to strengthen the Heart of Life?"
Their leader answered. "For an Echo Carrier like you, if you give it your full attention and energy, it can take several cycles (days). But with your mind and heart divided, the process can be both longer and dangerous. The Life Heart requires pure intent and complete dedication."
This was not the answer Kael wanted to hear. Whatever was at stake on Earth could not wait a few days. But neglecting the Life Heart could also be disastrous. This was a cruel test that challenged an Echo Carrier's priorities.
Kael looked at the Star Compass. The compass still pointed to the Life Heart, but it also quivered slightly in response to the Earthly call for help in Kael's mind. It was as if the compass itself was caught in this dilemma.
Finally, Kael took a deep breath. His decision had been made. "I will strengthen the Life Heart," he said resolutely. "That is my most important task right now. But I will do it as quickly as possible. Then... then we must find a way to Earth." It was a risky decision, trying to balance both responsibilities.
The leader of the Guardians of the Forest respected Kael's decision. "A wise choice, Echo Bearer. But remember, the Lords of the Void can sense your division and try to use it to their advantage."
Kael stepped in front of the Life Heart. Focusing his Chitauri core and all his willpower, he began the process of repairing and strengthening this ancient seal. In the back of his mind, those cries for help from Earth still echoed, but Kael tried to drown them out, to focus his full attention on the vital task at hand. This was not only a test of strength, but also of will and focus.
But just as he began to integrate with the Life Heart's energy, the signal from the Chitauri core suddenly changed. There was no longer a vague echo of danger, but a clear image and a sound: New York. And at the top of Fisk Tower, an energy source he had never seen before, similar to Chitauri technology, but much darker and more menacing, was activating. And next to that source of energy, a familiar figure had appeared: James Wesley. But Wesley's eyes were no longer human; the icy, bottomless darkness of the Void shone within.
"Kael," Wesley's voice whispered, echoing in Kael's mind, "Come back. Your master awaits you. And this time, there will be no escape."
This was not just a cry for help. This was a direct threat, a trap. And the Lords of the Void were using Kael's weakest point to lure him to Earth.
