Chapter 33: Whispers in the Night
That night, I lay on my side in Qin Jinnan's bed.
He was on the other side, his arms wrapped around me, pulling me close as he pressed himself against my back. The moonlight was bright, casting a soft glow through the window.
Qin Jinnan held me in his arms, his gaze fixed on the moon as we both silently watched its glow.
"The stray dog you fed," he murmured, breaking the quiet, "I had someone bring it home. It's outside the courtyard now. If you want, you can go see it tomorrow."
Neither of us slept much. Instead, he spoke softly to me, piece by piece, as though trying to fill the gaps of the lost ten years.
He told me how he had raised Xu Nian, about the raiders the system had sent to him in the past, and how much he had missed me all these years.
His hand gently stroked my hair as he whispered, "You don't need to rush to regain your memories. Whatever you want to know, I'll tell you, slowly, in time."
I shifted, turning slightly to face him, resting my head against his chest.
There was a pause before I spoke again, my voice soft as I asked, "Why was I resurrected by the system?"
I hesitated for a moment before adding, "Did you make some sort of deal with it? With the system?"
His eyes went still, the question catching him off guard.
