The corridor was buzzing with the noise, since the classes were over.
It was mostly theory, so nothing much happened, except this.
The girl who called out to me, was walking in front of me.
She said it would be better to relocate ourselves to a more quiet place, and decided upon a cafe.
At first I couldn't recognize her, but after some brainstorming of reading the story the previous night, I was able to identify this girl.
Monica Croft.
The only daughter of the Duke of the Croft Dukedom.
Long brown hair with characteristic red eyes were the features mentioned of Monica Croft, mentioned in the initial parts of the story.
After asking the system, I could confirm just one fact that, the Croft household, all have the same features.
So, I am sure that it's definitely her.
She is one of the main female leads of the story too.
I was planning to avoid the main characters for a while, but now that she has approached me first, I can't just deny.
Also, there is just one connection of her with Dorian Valen.
I think you must have all guessed it till now.
Yes, she is promised to marry Dorian, to strengthen the relationship between House Valen and Croft.
Of course, she is against it.
But, Dorian wanted to marry her, not because he loved her, but because of her status.
That's why, whenever she got close to the protagonist of the story, Dorian would try to sabotage him.
I have only read upto the completion of the first event only, so I don't exactly know what happens afterwards.
Still, I am pretty sure, the thing that is happening right now wasn't mentioned in the novel either.
I can only guess that in the later part of the story, she must have annulled the engagement.
Maybe, right now, she wants to talk about the engagement matter after all.
Anyway, my stance was quite clear in this aspect.
Until I become strong enough to face the strongest in this story with an equal footing, I wouldn't get involved in the story actively.
Well, except for the tasks, this system is giving me.
As I was thinking about all this, we reached at the front gate of the academy.
From there, one store which almost looked like a cafe to me, was just at the front.
But, a carriage stopped in front of us, as Monica signaled me to get on.
I observed the carriage for a second.
In spite of a lavish and luxurious one as I had expected, it was more on the worn out side.
On top of that, an old man was driving it.
She got into the carriage, without any hesitation, so I followed through.
The carriages I had noticed in the capital, were mostly decorated lavishly for higher nobles.
It would be difficult to find such an odd one in the Imperial Capital.
I started to think this was an insult to me, but discarded the thought, cause I don't really care about all that.
The carriage door shut with a thunk, and the old man flicked the reins gently. The vehicle started moving with a creak.
Monica sat across from me, legs crossed, gaze firm. Her posture was noble, but not stiff. Refined, yet not arrogant.
She looked at me with a stare that peeled back skin and studied bone.
Not hostile. Not friendly.
The carriage travelled through the side roads of the capital, into a less populated area.
"Dorian Valen.", she called out my full name, which was a bit odd too.
"...What? Are you finally going to talk about our future, Monica?", I responded, still skeptical of how to respond.
She chuckled a little, then looked outside the window of the carriage chamber.
"Let me ask you a question.", she paused before continuing.
"If you knew someone is going to take everything you care, away from you in the future, and they are sitting just in front of you, what would you do?", she asked.
The question sent a chill down my spine, as her crimson eyes locked onto mine.
"I am not really sure why you are asking me this.", I replied, preparing myself for impact.
"...Are you playing dumb, or have you really forgotten everything?", she asked her expression furious.
"Well, it doesn't really matter now. Cause I am not going to let you know what you did to my family and myself."
The carriage suddenly entered an area where there was not a single trace of life.
Monica's eyes were burning with fury with a hint of revenge.
"I will kill you with my own hands, Dorian."
