Chapter 6 - Chapter 11-12

Chapter 11: Moving Toward the Next Challenge

The beginning of 2007 brought a sense of newness and anticipation for Scott. After years of service and two intense deployments, he felt he was ready for something bigger, something that would challenge him on even deeper levels. The decision to volunteer for Green Team training the gateway to DEVGRU, the Navy's Tier 1 special operations unit was something he had pondered for months.

Now, sitting at the kitchen table in his parents' home, Scott prepared to share this decision with Michael and Jennifer. He knew the news would be met with a mixture of pride and concern.

It was a quiet January morning. Jennifer was in the kitchen, making coffee, while Michael read the newspaper in the dining room. Scott walked in, already dressed in his business casual uniform, and sat down at the table.

"Good morning, son," Jennifer said, placing a cup of coffee in front of him.

"Good morning, Mom. Dad," Scott replied, taking a deep breath before he began.

Michael put the newspaper down, noticing the serious tone in Scott's voice. "Something on your mind, son?"

Scott ran his hand through his hair, searching for the right words. "Yes, there's something I need to tell you."

Jennifer sat down beside him, worried. "What's wrong, honey? Is everything okay?"

"It's okay, Mom. But… I volunteered for the Green Team," Scott said firmly.

Michael leaned forward, his eyes narrowing curiously. "The Green Team? So, are you trying out for DEVGRU?"

Scott nodded. "Yes, Dad. I feel like I'm ready for the next step. I want to challenge myself even more. I want to be part of the elite of the elite."

Jennifer took a deep breath, her face expressing concern. "Scott, I knew you'd always strive for more, but the Green Team is… intense. And DEVGRU is even more dangerous. You've been through so much."

Scott took her hand, trying to reassure her. "I know, Mom. And I know you worry. But this is what I want. It's an opportunity to grow as an operator and as a leader."

Michael studied his son for a few seconds before speaking. "Scott, you know that Green Team isn't just physical training, right? It's technical, mental, and emotional. They test every fiber of your being. Few make it through. Are you ready for this?"

Scott looked directly at his father. "Yes, I am. I've been training and studying for this moment since I joined the SEALs. I know it's going to be hard, but that's exactly what motivates me."

Michael nodded slowly, pride evident in his eyes. "If this is what you want, then I'm behind you, son. I always knew you could make it to the top."

Jennifer squeezed Scott's hand. "I just want you to promise me that you'll take care of yourself."

"I promise, Mom," he said with a reassuring smile.

The next few weeks were intense. Although Scott was already in excellent physical shape, he knew that Green Team would require a level of preparation that went beyond the physical. He spent hours reviewing advanced tactics, studying operational intelligence, and honing his skills in hand-to-hand combat, CQB, and underwater operations.

Michael often accompanied him on morning runs, offering advice on how to stay clear-headed under pressure.

"Remember, Scott," he would say during a jog around the neighborhood. "No matter how hard it gets, you're never alone. Trust your team, just as they trust you."

Scott soaked up every word, recognizing his father's wisdom. Jennifer, in turn, made sure he was well fed and rested. Despite her constant worry, she made sure to show unwavering support.

"You're stronger than you think, Scott," she said one night as she set a meal on the table. "And no matter what happens, we'll be here for you."

The day arrived for Scott to leave for the East Coast, where Green Team training would be held. Michael and Jennifer accompanied him to the naval base, where he would catch his flight.

As they waited in the parking lot, the mood was one of excitement and apprehension. Jennifer hugged him tightly, her eyes filling with tears.

"Promise me you'll call me whenever you can," she said.

"I promise, Mom," Scott replied, trying to hide his emotion.

Michael squeezed his son's hand and then pulled him into a firm hug. "You're already a great leader, Scott. No matter what happens on Green Team, remember that."

"Thanks, Dad," Scott said, gratitude in his voice.

As Scott walked to the gate, he looked back and saw his parents waving. He knew their support would be crucial in the months to come.

Green Team was everything Scott had hoped for—and more. From day one, the instructors made it clear that the level of demand was unlike anything he had ever faced.

"You are here because you are the best of the best," announced one of the instructors, a DEVGRU veteran. "But that doesn't mean anything until you prove that you deserve to be here."

The first few weeks were a relentless test of physical and mental endurance. Scott and the other candidates went through extreme exercises, simulating highly technical combat scenarios. Every mistake was analyzed in detail, and the pressure to excel was constant.

One night, after hours of grueling training, Scott sat alone in his dorm, reflecting on the path he had traveled. He picked up the phone and called home.

Jennifer answered, her voice warm as ever. "Scott! How are you, honey?"

"Tired," he admitted with a smile. "But I'm fine. I just wanted to hear your voice."

Michael picked up the phone next. "How are things, son?"

"Intense, Dad. But I knew it would be this way. I'm learning a lot, and that motivates me to keep going."

Michael smiled on the other end of the line. "You're where you're supposed to be, Scott. Remember, it's not just about being the best, it's about doing the best for your team."

"I know, Dad. Thanks," Scott replied, feeling invigorated by the words.

As training progressed, Scott felt more and more confident in his abilities. He knew the road ahead would be long, but each challenge he overcame brought him closer to his goal.

And as he continued to strive to become a part of DEVGRU, Scott carried with him the lessons of his father, the love of his mother, and the certainty that he was on the right path.

The next chapter of his journey was just beginning.

Chapter 12: Forged at Dam Neck

Dam Neck, Virginia Beach, was known among Navy SEAL operators as the place where the best became the legendary. It was here that Green Team training took place, a grueling, selective process designed to transform the most experienced SEALs into DEVGRU level one operators.

Scott was among the few who had lasted this far. Of the fifteen SEALs who had begun training, only seven remained, including him. Each day was a battle against physical, emotional, and mental limits, but Scott knew that was exactly what defined him as a true warrior.

It was a frigid morning at Dam Neck, and the seven remaining operators lined up on the beach, breathing heavily as the sun rose over the horizon. The cold Atlantic water still dripped from their uniforms, the result of a forced run followed by a simulated sea infiltration.

The lead instructor, a veteran DEVGRU operator with over 20 years of experience, walked slowly down the line, assessing each man with a measured gaze.

"You've made it this far, but that doesn't mean anything," he said in a firm voice. "Green Team isn't about physical strength. It's about precision, technique, and most of all, the mental control to do the impossible under the worst conditions."

Scott stood rigidly, his eyes fixed on the horizon. He knew the instructor's words were true. Each day on Green Team was a reminder that what separated the successful from the unsuccessful was not just skill, but the ability to think clearly under extreme pressure.

One of the most challenging parts of the training was CQB (Close Quarters Battle), where operators learned to master the art of breaching and clearing buildings in urban settings. The margin for error was zero, and every move was rigorously scrutinized.

Scott and his partner for the exercise, a SEAL named Ramirez, were preparing for a simulated home invasion. The scenario was complex, with hostile targets and hostages mixed in several rooms.

"Walker, Ramirez, are you ready?" the instructor asked, adjusting the timer in his hand.

"Ready," Scott replied, adjusting his weapon and checking his equipment.

When the signal was given, they advanced into the house, moving in perfect synchrony. Scott led the way, checking angles and eliminating hostile targets with precision. Ramirez covered his flank, and together they advanced fluidly, as if they were an extension of each other.

At the end of the exercise, the instructor waved them forward.

"Walker, great job keeping your cool under pressure. Ramirez, good support, but you need to be quicker in clearing corners. Remember, in the real world, a mistake like that can cost lives."

Scott nodded, absorbing the feedback. He knew that even with his experience, there was always room for improvement. In the few hours of downtime they had, the seven remaining operators would gather together to talk and relax. They knew that only a few would be selected in the end, but that didn't stop them from bonding.

That night, they sat in a small lounge on the base, sharing stories of past missions. "So, Walker," an operator named Jenkins began. "I heard you were in Ramadi with SEAL Team 3. Did you work with Chris Kyle?"

Scott smiled slightly. "Yeah, I was there. He was the best at what he did, no doubt. But it wasn't just his aim that was impressive. It was the way he kept everyone calm, even in the worst situations."

"What about you?" Ramirez asked. "Have you ever had to lead something like that?"

Scott shrugged. "I've been in tough situations, but leadership is less about barking orders and more about making sure your team trusts you. When they know you're there for them, everything flows."

The others nodded, respecting Scott's words. Here, among equals, he felt he had nothing to prove.

One of the final phases of Green Team was the survival test, where operators were placed in a controlled but hostile environment to test their skills under extreme deprivation of sleep, food, and comfort.

Scott and the others were taken to a secluded location, where they received minimal instruction. Their mission was simple: survive and complete a series of strategic tasks while facing simulated "enemy forces."

During one of the most difficult nights, Scott and Ramirez hid in a small makeshift shelter, trying to avoid capture by a team of instructors.

"Walker," Ramirez whispered, adjusting his gear. "I don't know if I can make it through another night of this."

Scott put a hand on his shoulder, looking directly into his eyes. "You can do this, Ramirez. This is temporary. Remember what we're here for to do. And remember why you started all this."

Scott's words seemed to strengthen Ramirez, who took a deep breath and nodded.

Finally, the last assessment arrived. It was a complex scenario that mixed CQB, infiltration, exfiltration, and critical real-time decision-making.

Scott led his team through a flawless exercise, making quick and accurate decisions while keeping everyone focused on the mission. At the end, the lead instructor gathered the seven remaining operators.

"You made it to the end of Green Team," he said seriously. "That in itself is an impressive feat. But not everyone will be selected for DEVGRU. Those who are will receive their notices soon."

Scott felt his heart race, but he kept his expression neutral. He knew he had given it his all. Now, all that was left to do was wait.

Back at the barracks, Scott called home. Jennifer answered immediately.

"Scott! How are you, my dear?"

"Tired but fine, Mom. We're almost done with training."

Michael picked up the phone and spoke with pride in his voice. "Son, no matter the outcome, remember that we are incredibly proud of you. Just getting this far is an accomplishment few can achieve."

"Thank you, Dad. That means a lot," Scott said, feeling comforted by the words.

As he waited for the final results, Scott reflected on his journey. He knew that Green Team was not just a test of skill, but also of character. Whether he passed or failed, he knew he had grown as a leader and an operator.

But deep down, he also knew he was ready for the next challenge to join the best of the best and continue serving his country with honor and determination.
