Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: Returning Flames

Adrian's flight landed in Manila just as the first hues of dawn colored the sky. The city was waking slowly, but for him, the day felt charged — a mix of relief, determination, and the faint echo of distant challenges still ahead.

As he stepped out of the airport, the tropical heat wrapped around him like a familiar cloak. Waiting near the arrival gate was Kai, Jom, and Ella — all tired-eyed but grinning wide. They had been holding the fort while he was away, ensuring *City of Stars* stayed on course.

Kai waved enthusiastically. "Welcome back, boss."

Jom added with a playful grin, "Try not to get kidnapped by paparazzi this time."

Adrian laughed, though a part of him was uneasy. The break had been brief, but he knew the pressures of fame and success were gathering.

---

Not long after, as Adrian and his friends headed toward their condo, a figure lingered near a nearby coffee shop. The man — wearing a baseball cap and oversized sunglasses despite the morning light — held a small camera, snapping discreet photos.

Kai noticed first. "Hey, that guy's been following us since the airport."

Jom narrowed his eyes. "Paparazzi or worse."

Adrian felt the familiar twinge of irritation. "Let's not make a scene. But keep an eye on him."

They continued walking, trying to keep their pace casual, but the presence of the mysterious photographer added an edge to their return.

---

At the condo, Adrian sank into the familiar chair in his makeshift office. The large monitor showed clips from their previous shoots, while messages from crew popped up on his phone.

"Things are moving," Ella reported. "But some actors are still struggling with choreography and timing. We'll need extra sessions."

Adrian sighed. The process was slow, painstaking, but necessary. "Let's keep pushing. We have to get it right."

He thought about Gabbi — a rookie yet fiercely determined. Her progress had been remarkable, but there was still room to grow.

---

Meanwhile, across town, Rina Velasco sat in the cramped production office of the studio she worked for. The walls were plastered with movie posters, schedules, and notes scribbled on whiteboards.

At 24, Rina had already completed her directing degree, graduating with honors. Despite her youthful appearance, she carried the poise of someone who had endured the pressures of the industry for two years. As a vice director, her job was demanding but limited — she took orders from her boss and rarely had freedom to shape the creative vision.

"Another meeting at noon," her producer reminded her. "And remember, your role is to keep things running smoothly, not to rock the boat."

Rina nodded, though frustration flickered beneath her calm exterior. She had ambitions, ideas, but the path was narrow and controlled.

---

Back at Adrian's condo, the group gathered for a quick briefing. Lance was joining them remotely via video call, offering insights from the editing bay.

Jom, ever the joker, tried to lighten the mood. "Hey, maybe the paparazzi wants an autograph."

Kai shook his head. "More like they want a scoop."

Ella cut in, "We can't let outside distractions derail us. Focus on the music and the choreography."

Adrian stood, determination lighting his eyes. "Exactly. We're reclaiming our story. Let the world watch — but on our terms."

---

Later that afternoon, as Adrian reviewed the schedule, a knock sounded at the door. It was the building security, holding an envelope addressed to him.

Inside was a series of photos — candid shots taken over the past days: the actors rehearsing, Adrian giving directions, even moments of private conversation.

A note was attached: *"The world wants to know who's really behind City of Stars. Be careful."*

Adrian's jaw tightened. The game was changing.

---

Meanwhile, Rina faced her own battles. On set, she directed the actors with precision, managing schedules, and mediating between the demanding lead director and the restless crew.

A veteran actor, known for his sharp tongue and big ego, challenged her instructions. "You're too young to be telling me what to do."

Rina met his gaze steadily. "I'm here to ensure the film gets made — on time and well. If you want to argue, take it up with the director."

The actor scoffed but backed down. Small victories.

---

That evening, Adrian met with Kai and Jom to discuss the next phase of their film.

"We'll need to ramp up rehearsals," Adrian said. "Especially for the climax scenes — dance and song have to be perfect."

Kai nodded. "Gabbi's improving, but she's still learning."

Jom grinned, "She's got heart. We just need to keep fueling it."

Adrian smiled faintly. "And I'll be there, every step of the way."

---

Underneath the city lights, a shadow watched. The paparazzi — or perhaps something more — waited for a chance to catch Adrian off guard.

But Adrian wasn't the same young man from months ago. He was ready for the fight ahead.

The flame of *City of Stars* was only beginning to burn brighter. (End chapter)
