Chapter 76 - Chapter 75 – Five Men, One Fate

Inside the Tiger I — Armored train en route to the DonJanuary 26, 1943

The rattling of the train was constant, monotonous. Inside the Tiger, the hatch was shut tight against the cold. The space smelled of oil, worn leather, and steel tempered by memory.

They hadn't spoken in hours. Each man locked in his own silence.

It was Helmut, the loader, who broke the stillness.

—"Ever think we'd still be alive in '43?"

Konrad, the gunner, crouched near the cannon, snorted humorlessly.

—"I didn't think I'd see November. Of '41."

Ernst, the radio operator, adjusted his gloves and stared absently at the front machine gun.

—"What if it all ends in Stalingrad?"

Falk didn't look at anyone. He was staring at the control panel. He spoke without turning.

—"Depends on how it starts."

Lukas, the driver, muttered from his seat:

—"And whether the engine freezes before we get there."

The others gave quiet smiles. No one laughed, but the humor was welcome.

—"What if we don't come back?" Helmut asked, more seriously now.

Konrad's voice was steady:

—"Then we'll be one of those names without a grave, but with a story."

Ernst scoffed.

—"Comforting."

—"It's all we've got," Falk said.

—"It's more than some get," Lukas added from below. "Plenty won't even have a story."

The train shook harder as it hit a junction.

Falk crossed his arms.

—"If someone makes it back, let them tell what we did. No flags. No speeches. Just men… doing what no one else would."

Helmut nodded slowly.

—"You know what I'd like? To see a sunrise and not wonder if we're getting bombed."

—"I'd like to sleep in a bed without my boots on," Ernst said.

—"To hear a song from when I was a kid," Konrad added.

They all looked to Falk.

—"And you?"

Falk took his time.

—"If we die… I want it to be for something that mattered."

Lukas muttered:

—"Then we're headed in the right direction."

And for a few minutes, between steel and frost, there was something that felt like peace.
