Chapter 38 - Chapter 38

As soon as the words fell, the old lady suddenly exploded like a powder keg, standing up angrily with her hands on her hips, loudly scolding Katherine:

"How can you still have the face to ask how my son's accident happened? Aren't you his attending doctor? Don't you know how the accident happened?"

Katherine was not intimidated by the anger. She calmly looked at the old lady and patiently explained:

"Auntie, please don't be angry. Exactly because I am Patient Chen's attending doctor, I must clarify the situation. Every detail in the medical process is very important. This accident happened under suspicious circumstances. There are parts I still have doubts about. Only by understanding the whole story clearly can we avoid similar incidents in the future and give you and Patient Chen an explanation."

Her voice was steady and sincere, speaking earnestly in a way that made it hard to keep being angry.

Although the old lady was still upset, she snorted coldly and sat back down, silently allowing Katherine to continue asking questions.

Seeing this, Katherine turned her attention back to Patient Chen, "Mr. Chen, can you still remember what happened that day?"

The air in the hospital room seemed to freeze at that moment.

Patient Chen furrowed his brow slightly, his eyes showing signs of recalling, and fell into a brief but heavy silence.

After a moment, he slowly spoke, breaking the suffocating quiet: "Doctor Katherine, after you came to check on me that day, another person came not long after."

He paused, as if trying hard to dig out details from his memory. "That person was wearing a mask. I didn't see her face clearly, but I think I have heard her voice before."

"She should also be a doctor from your department."

Katherine listened attentively, keeping her eyes fixed on Patient Chen's face, encouraging him to continue.

"Well, do you remember what she said or did after she came in?"

A flash of unease crossed Patient Chen's eyes, as if he had returned to that terrible moment.

"She came straight to check the IV site. She looked and said Doctor Katherine, you missed prescribing one set of medication. Then she took a syringe and a bottle of medicine out of her pocket and injected it."

"After that, I don't remember anything."

Katherine's face instantly turned pale. A storm raged inside her mind as she suddenly understood everything.

Her eyes darkened, thinking to herself: Shanshan actually did something so unethical to get rid of me.

The result could be guessed without asking: The medicine she injected into Patient Chen most likely contained anesthesia and drugs that irritate the respiratory tract. This was a very sinister and cruel act.

Calmly, she reached into her pocket and turned off the voice recorder. She had quietly obtained the evidence.

At this moment, the old lady could no longer hold back her suspicion and dissatisfaction. She immediately shouted loudly: "Chen, what do you mean by this?"

"Are you saying the medicine that doctor injected was wrong? Or are you just saying this to please Doctor Katherine?"

Patient Chen sighed helplessly, looking sincerely at his mother: "Mom, I'm just telling the truth."

Katherine felt deep guilt in her heart and spoke with sincere apology: "Mr. Chen, that day I really made a mistake. I thought I had checked everything well before leaving the hospital."

"I shouldn't have taken a chance and left."

Patient Chen shook his head: "Doctor Katherine, you don't need to apologize. Everyone has urgent matters. You actually did very well."

Tears welled up in Katherine's eyes. A warm feeling rose in her heart from this rare understanding and forgiveness.

"Thank you for your understanding. There is one more thing I want to ask you."

"Dr. Katherine, please go ahead." Patient Chen still responded calmly.

"Why did you suddenly transfer to this hospital?" Katherine asked with suspicion.

The old lady immediately got angry and interrupted, saying, "Why else? The doctors at your hospital told us they ran out of medicine for follow-up treatment and told us to come here."

"I really don't understand why such a big hospital doesn't even have medicine but is still open."

Her words were full of complaints and dissatisfaction with the original hospital.

Katherine felt even more certain this was a carefully planned conspiracy.

Hospital Director Wang was not only manipulating the medication but also trying to transfer patients to cover everything up.

But at this moment, she still remained calm and graceful in front of Patient Chen and his mother.

She knew there were more things to investigate and resolve.

"Mr. Chen, thank you for telling me the truth."

After speaking, Katherine took an envelope from her bag and placed it beside Patient Chen. "Mr. Chen, I'm really sorry. This is a small gift from me. I hope you can accept it."

Patient Chen immediately refused, "Dr. Katherine, I can't accept this. Honestly, I wasn't alert enough and caused trouble for you."

"Dr. Katherine, please take it back. I can't keep it."

Seeing his refusal, Katherine stood and walked to the old lady. "Auntie, please keep it. It's just a small token from me."

The old lady did not refuse and took it directly. "Hmm, I know you didn't do it on purpose. Don't worry about it in the future."

Patient Chen shouted, "Mom, give that back to Dr. Katherine."

The old lady glanced at him but ignored his words.

Katherine nodded slightly. "I'll leave now. Mr. Chen, please rest well."

Back in her car, Katherine took out a voice recorder from her pocket and pressed play. Patient Chen's voice came from it.

She listened carefully. This alone wasn't enough to make Hospital Director Wang confess.

Because the surveillance showed Hospital Director Wang wearing a mask. Although Katherine recognized her figure, it wouldn't convince others.

If Hospital Director Wang refused to admit it, there was nothing they could do.

She needed Hospital Director Wang to say it herself.

Katherine took out her phone and sent a message to Nurse Sana.

[Sana, is Hospital Director Wang working now?]

Soon, Nurse Sana replied, [Katherine, she is at work.]

Katherine thought for a moment. Now she could only wait at the hospital for her to finish work, then see where she went.

She had often heard people in the department talk about her liking to go to nightclubs.

Looks like today she had to try her luck.
