Maria had barely settled into her new rhythm when the past came knocking—loud and unexpected.
She was returning from the supermarket, plastic bags in hand, when she saw a familiar face leaning against the gate.
Titi.
Her former co-worker from the hotel. The only one who knew what had happened all those years ago.
"Titi?" Maria's voice was a mixture of surprise and caution.
"Maria! I heard you were staying here. Na wa o! Madam big girl now?" Titi said with a wide smile, but her eyes were sharp.
Maria glanced around. "What are you doing here?"
Titi lowered her voice. "Word's spreading. People are saying you and Alexander Madu are… together. That he's the boy's father."
Maria's stomach tightened. "That's none of anyone's business."
Titi leaned closer. "It is when some people from his side don't like the idea. You think his rich friends and family will welcome you with open arms? A former hotel maid with a bastard child?"
Maria's slap came without warning. Sharp. Echoing.
Titi's eyes widened. "You've changed."
"Yes," Maria said, voice steady. "I've been through fire. I don't burn the same anymore."
Titi scoffed. "Just be careful. Not everyone who smiles at you means well. And the richer they are, the sharper the knives behind their back."
She walked away, leaving Maria shaken.
That evening, Maria didn't tell Alexander about the encounter. But as she watched Junior sleep peacefully in his new bed, her mind spun with worry.
