Our house is full of men dressed in black, carrying big guns. No matter which corner of the farm you go to, they're there. It's been like that ever since I was a child. It's like they're always guarding something. But my mom said it's normal to have guards around when you own a farm. Hmm, what exactly are they guarding? The fruits!? I laughed at the thought.
I stepped out of my room and looked left and right to check if anyone was around. I walked toward the stairs and went down slowly, heading straight to the kitchen where the car keys are kept in a drawer. Thank goodness, no one's here! I looked behind me again as I opened the drawer. There were three keys. Hmm, which one should I choose? I picked the one with a pink flower keychain—probably my mom's for sure! I grabbed it and slowly closed the drawer. Good thing Kenny, one of the bodyguards here, taught me how to drive. That was my mom's 16th birthday gift—letting me learn to drive, though I was only allowed to drive around the farm.
I walked to the main door and saw two guards. Of course, they were in all black, with guns slung on their sides.
"Hi! Mom told me to tell you she's heading out, so please prep the gate," I said. They both nodded in agreement and talked to their walkie-talkies.
I turned around and walked back into the house, hiding a smile. Those two believed me way too easily!
I grabbed my mom's stolen brown beach hat. All I brought with me was the car key, the hat, and my phone. I made my way to the basement parking. The only problem? I didn't know which car the key belonged to! Ugh! I pressed the unlock button on the key and a white car flashed its lights.
Audi R8—Max once told me. I remember her mentioning the model when she saw my mom driving it out of the farm.
Ugh. Perfect! What a gorgeous ride.
I pressed the button to open the garage door and quickly got into the car before anyone could catch me. I also put on my mom's hat. Perfect!
My heart was pounding—I wasn't sure if it was because of excitement or the fear of what would happen if Mom and Dad found out. Especially Marco—he's always been against me talking to anyone other than Max, and he's even more against the idea of me going to or living in the city. I shook my head to get rid of those thoughts before I could get even more anxious. But deep down, I was happy. Even just for a little while, I could feel free.
I started the engine. I was ready. I glanced at the glove compartment—and was shocked by what I saw. A small gun.
Mom, why do you have a gun here? Beside it were sunglasses. I took those and put them on. I'll think about the gun later—I didn't want this day ruined by overthinking what that was for.
I drove out of the garage and out of the farm. One of the bodyguards even saluted when he saw me! They probably thought I really was Mom. I had to laugh. This is it! Freedom!
Wait... Where am I even going?
