Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: The Warning

Ethan's words hung in the air like a challenge. "We need to be careful," he said, his eyes scanning the crowded streets. "We're getting close to the truth, and I have a feeling we're not the only ones looking for it."

I nodded, my heart still racing from our narrow escape. As we walked, I couldn't shake the feeling that we were being watched. Every glance over my shoulder revealed nothing but strangers going about their business, but the sensation persisted.

Suddenly, Ethan grabbed my arm and pulled me into a small café. "Let's lay low for a bit," he said, his eyes scanning the street outside.

We sat down at a table, and Ethan ordered us a couple of coffees. As we waited for our drinks to arrive, he leaned in close. "I think it's time I told you more about the Heartstone Building," he said, his voice low and serious.

"What do you mean?" I asked, my curiosity piqued.

Ethan glanced around the café, ensuring we were alone. "The building is more than just a hub of supernatural energy," he said. "It's a nexus point for ancient powers. Some people believe it's a portal to other dimensions, while others think it's a source of immense power."

I felt a shiver run down my spine. "What kind of powers?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

Ethan's eyes locked onto mine. "The kind that can change the course of history," he said, his voice filled with a sense of urgency. "We need to be careful, Kate. We're playing with forces beyond our understanding."

As our coffees arrived, I couldn't help but wonder what lay ahead. What secrets would we uncover? And what dangers would we face?

Just then, a piece of paper slipped onto our table. I picked it up, and my heart sank. A single sentence was scrawled on the paper: "Back off while you still can."

I looked up at Ethan, my eyes wide with fear. "What does this mean?" I asked, my voice shaking.

Ethan's face was grim. "It means we're getting close," he said. "And they're warning us to stop."
