Li Wei woke early, sunlight gently filtering through the silk curtains of her bedroom. She stretched lazily, savoring the softness of her embroidered sheets and the comforting aroma of jasmine drifting in from the garden outside. Her life in the imperial palace was simple and peaceful—quiet mornings, afternoons spent studying medicinal herbs, and evenings sharing stories with her mother and younger brother, Xiao Ming.
As she dressed, Li Wei selected a delicate pale-blue robe embroidered with lotus flowers, her favorite. The servants bustled quietly around her, combing her long black hair until it shimmered like silk. "Miss Wei, breakfast is ready," said her loyal maid, Jia, with a bright smile.
"Thank you, Jia," Li Wei replied warmly. She loved these calm mornings, filled with the gentle rhythms of daily palace life.
At breakfast, the family gathered around the intricately carved wooden table. Her mother, Lady Li, smiled softly, pouring fragrant tea into delicate porcelain cups. Xiao Ming, only eight years old, eagerly reached for the sweet steamed buns, his cheerful face smeared with honey.
"Slow down, Xiao Ming," Li Wei laughed, wiping his cheek gently. "Nobody will steal your food."
"You never know!" he said playfully, taking another bite. Their laughter filled the small dining room, a sound as sweet as the buns themselves.
After breakfast, Li Wei wandered into the garden, breathing in the fresh air. The imperial garden was her sanctuary, filled with blossoming flowers and herbs she studied carefully, learning their properties and how to use them for healing. Her father, before he passed, had taught her to find meaning in nature and value in simplicity.
Lost in her thoughts, Li Wei barely noticed the sudden commotion erupting near the palace gates. But as shouts echoed closer, her heart tightened with unease. Something was wrong. She turned sharply towards the sound, just as Jia ran to her side, breathless and pale.
"Miss Wei! Soldiers are coming! The Emperor's men—"
"What's happening?" Li Wei's voice trembled slightly.
"I—I don't know. But they're headed here."
Li Wei hurried inside, heart racing. Her mother stood anxiously by the door, clutching Xiao Ming's hand tightly. Before Li Wei could ask questions, the gates crashed open. Soldiers stormed into their courtyard, harsh voices barking orders that shattered the morning's peace.
"Lady Li and family! By order of the Emperor, your property and status are hereby revoked!"
Li Wei gasped, shock freezing her in place. Her mother stepped forward bravely. "There must be some mistake—"
"There is no mistake." A firm, commanding voice sliced through the chaos. Li Wei turned to see a tall, imposing figure emerge from among the soldiers, dressed in black armor. His face was partially hidden behind a dark iron mask, cold eyes staring unflinchingly from beneath it.
"Who—who are you?" Li Wei managed to ask, her voice barely audible.
"General Yan Chen," he replied curtly, his voice steady yet distant. "I am here to enforce the Emperor's command. Your family is to leave immediately. All possessions will be confiscated."
The general's words felt like ice, each syllable sharp and painful. Xiao Ming began to cry, hiding behind his mother's skirts. Li Wei felt a surge of anger, mingling with confusion and fear.
"But why?" she asked, stepping closer despite her trembling legs. "We've done nothing wrong!"
The masked general looked at her, his eyes unreadable, a fleeting hesitation crossing his features. But quickly it vanished, replaced by the same cold expression.
"The Emperor's decisions are not to be questioned," he replied flatly. "Take only what you can carry and leave. Now."
Soldiers began to move swiftly, entering their home without hesitation, gathering precious vases, silk tapestries, scrolls filled with memories. Everything they had built, all the remnants of her father's legacy, taken in an instant.
Li Wei rushed to her mother, wrapping a comforting arm around Xiao Ming. "We will be alright," she whispered, though uncertainty filled her voice. Her mother nodded weakly, tears slipping down her cheeks.
They were guided roughly toward the palace gates, leaving behind the comfort and security they'd always known. Neighbors and acquaintances watched silently, eyes filled with sympathy but also fear, unwilling to help or even speak.
As they stepped outside the grand palace gates, the reality hit hard. They had no home, no money, no status. Their world had crumbled around them, leaving only uncertainty.
Li Wei turned to glance one last time at their former home, catching sight of General Yan Chen standing silently among his soldiers, still and expressionless. She held his gaze briefly, wondering who this man was behind the mask, wondering if he felt anything at all.
Finally, he broke eye contact, signaling his men to close the gates behind them.
With nowhere else to turn, Li Wei took her mother's trembling hand and Xiao Ming's small fingers, stepping forward into the bustling city streets. Merchants called loudly, unaware or indifferent to the devastation that had just occurred. The once comforting noises of daily life now seemed harsh and chaotic.
Her mother looked around in despair. "What will we do now?"
Li Wei took a deep breath, pushing down her own fear and uncertainty. "We survive," she said softly, trying to sound stronger than she felt. "Father always said true strength shows itself in difficult times."
Her mother's eyes softened, drawing strength from Li Wei's words. Xiao Ming sniffled, wiping his eyes bravely. "We'll be alright, won't we, sister?"
"Yes," Li Wei promised firmly, forcing herself to believe it. "We'll find a way."
As they moved through the crowded streets, searching for any refuge, Li Wei silently vowed to herself that she would protect her family, whatever it took. They might have lost their status and possessions, but she would never let them lose hope.
Meanwhile, behind the closed palace gates, General Yan Chen stood quietly, his heart unexpectedly heavy beneath his iron mask. He had enforced many imperial orders, but this felt different. Something about Li Wei's courage, the fierce determination hidden beneath her delicate appearance, tugged at memories he'd long tried to bury.
He watched silently until her figure disappeared into the crowded streets, and for a brief, unguarded moment, he wondered if fate was playing a cruel trick on them both.
