Chapter 2 - Building

BERN, 1998.

In the principal's office.

Thank you, parents, for coming—Mr. Victor and Mrs. Caroline Laggerdoff, and Mrs. Catarina Lemes. Unfortunately, your children acted in bad faith during the school play and compromised all the other students. I'd like to discuss in more detail what Professor Angélica reports they said backstage after the incident.

In detention.

My dad's going to be furious about this—serves him right.

And I'm going to show how this horrible school has made my life worse.

NEW YORK, 1998.

In the office.

What did he do? That little brat is a nightmare! Give me the phone! Ângelo will go back to living under my rules—screw that mother of his!

BERN, 1998.

In detention.

You know, my mom's name is Catarina too. You have a very different personality from hers.

Why do you say that?

Because I'm scared of what might happen to her. Her health is really bad, and my dad makes a point of not paying for proper treatment. It's like he wants to see her dead—maybe that's exactly what he wants.

Why make your dad even angrier? Won't he take it out on your mom?

I want him to see. I want him to pay for it. And you—why did you agree to do this with me?

Well, my case isn't as complicated as yours. I just can't stand this school... I've never been so unhappy. I guess this was just my way of expressing it.

NEW YORK, 2003.

In the office.

Sir, there's a woman who wants to speak with you.

Who is she?

Her name is Virgínia. She's carrying a baby and said you'd recognize her.

Hmm. Tell her to come in—no, better yet, tell her to wait for me at that burger place I always go to.

Yes, sir.

In his thoughts.

What's today's disaster going to be?

At the burger place.

Felipe is your son. Don't you recognize him?

Well, I'm not great with these things. I remember you—what do you want?

I need money.

Everyone needs money. Just because you have a "son of mine" doesn't mean I'll give you any.

My husband doesn't acknowledge this child's paternity. He hates us.

Well, sounds like he's got the right idea.

Please, Aristóteles.

Come back to my bed a few more times, and I might consider your case.

TORONTO, 2025.

In the building.

Felipe, your interview will be with the big boss.

What do you mean, Carlos?

The big boss is the one handling the process.

In his thoughts.

Well, whatever God wills.

At the interview.

You are...?

Hi, I'm Felipe Dias.

Please, have a seat, Felipe.

I'm Ângelo. I know it's not every day someone like me conducts interviews—well, I'd like you to answer a few questions.

Of course, as you wish.

You were recommended by the finance department. What did you learn from them?

I learned that with a good, competent, and engaged team, you can reach the top.

You're at the top, Felipe. What made you study economics in college?

I've always been good with numbers and always sought to combine my knowledge with

— Which other companies have you interviewed with?

None, sir. This is my first since finishing my internship here.

There's no real reason to hire an employee with no experience.

Please, I'm a committed person. I may not be the most qualified for the role, but I have the drive

— That's what you say.

I can—

You'll receive a response by the end of the day, Mr. Felipe.

Thank you for your time, Mr. Ângelo.

In the thoughts of both.

Does he remember me? It's been so long...
