Chapter 14 – The Choice That Was Already Made
Silence did not feel empty anymore.
It felt prepared.
Evetyl Clarke stood perfectly still, realizing something that made her stomach tighten.
The "choice" the voice asked for… did not feel like a request.
It felt like a missing piece the room was waiting to insert.
Clara Whitmore noticed the shift in her posture immediately.
"Don't do it," Clara said quietly.
Evetyl swallowed. "I haven't done anything."
Clara shook her head once.
"You're about to."
The inn no longer creaked.
It waited.
That was worse.
Because sound implied movement.
Silence implied readiness.
Evetyl looked around slowly.
The hallway didn't feel distorted anymore.
It felt aligned.
Like it had settled into a final configuration and was now expecting confirmation.
She whispered, "I feel like… whatever I think next is already known."
Clara answered immediately.
"It is."
A pause.
"And it's preparing to use it."
The voice returned.
Not from anywhere.
From agreement itself.
"…decision pending."
Evetyl flinched.
Clara stepped closer, lowering her voice.
"Don't answer internally," she said.
Evetyl frowned. "How do I not think?"
Clara's eyes sharpened.
"You don't resolve thoughts into outcomes."
Evetyl stared at her. "That's not possible."
Clara replied calmly.
"It is here."
The inn door clicked again.
Not opening.
Not locking.
Updating.
