Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: First Fracture Moment.

Morning arrived beneath a gray sky. The abandoned apartment building was quiet. A cold breeze drifted through the broken windows, carrying the distant cries of Veil creatures across the ruined city.

Kai had been awake long before sunrise. He sat beside a cracked window, staring at the empty streets below.

His head no longer hurt. That should have made him feel better. Instead, it made him uneasy. The pain had disappeared. The voices had not.

Reginald remained silent. Marcus had not spoken since yesterday. The third Echo was quiet as well. Kai could still feel them inside him. They were simply waiting.

Behind him, soft footsteps echoed through the room. Lira walked in carrying three metal cups filled with warm water. "I found a stove downstairs," she said. "It still works."

Kai accepted one of the cups. "Thank you."

She smiled gently. "You're welcome."

Instead of sitting beside him, Lira chose a spot a few feet away. Kai noticed the distance immediately. It was only a few steps. But it felt much farther.

He stared into the steam rising from the cup. "I'm sorry."

Lira looked at him. "For what?"

"For yesterday. When my eyes changed... I saw you step back."

She lowered her eyes. "I did."

Kai nodded slowly. "I don't blame you."

Lira took a deep breath. "I wasn't afraid of you." She paused. "I was afraid that, for a moment... you weren't Kai anymore."

The words settled heavily between them. Kai looked back out the window. "I wasn't sure who I was either."

Silence filled the room. Neither of them knew what to say next.

A loud yawn broke the quiet. Mira walked into the room carrying a paper bag filled with canned food. She looked from Kai to Lira and immediately sensed the serious mood. "I knew it. You two started another deep conversation without inviting me."

Kai smiled faintly. "We didn't plan it."

"You never do." She dropped the bag onto the floor. "Good news. I found breakfast."

Kai picked up one of the cans. "I never thought I'd be happy to see canned beans."

Mira grinned. "Give it another week. You'll celebrate finding a clean pair of socks."

Kai laughed. Even Lira smiled. For a few moments, everything almost felt normal again.

Kai reached for the can opener. His hand suddenly stopped. He frowned.

Lira noticed immediately. "What is it?"

Kai looked around the room. His expression slowly changed. "I..." He searched his memory. Something was missing. "When did we come here?"

Mira blinked. "Last night."

"I know." Kai rubbed his forehead. "But I don't remember coming into this building."

The smile disappeared from Mira's face. Lira quietly set down her cup. "Kai..."

He closed his eyes. He remembered leaving the ruined bookstore. He remembered walking through the streets. After that, nothing. It was as if someone had carefully erased a small piece of his memory. Not enough for anyone else to notice. Just enough for him to know something was gone.

He opened his eyes again. "I really can't remember."

A familiar blue screen suddenly appeared before him.

The blue screen slowly faded away. Kai stared at the empty space where it had been. The warning remained in his mind. He wasn't just forgetting things anymore. The System itself had confirmed it. He was beginning to lose pieces of himself.

Kai continued staring at the place where the blue screen had disappeared. The System had never sounded so serious before. He slowly sat down. His hands rested on his knees. For the first time since becoming an Echo Weaver, he wasn't thinking about monsters or Hunters. He was thinking about himself.

Lira watched him quietly. "The System gave you another warning, didn't it?"

Kai looked up. "How did you know?"

"You always become quiet afterward."

Kai let out a slow breath. "It says my memories are getting worse."

Neither Lira nor Mira spoke. The silence itself was an answer.

Kai looked at the floor. "I thought losing memories would feel different. I thought I would notice them disappearing. But it isn't like that." He shook his head. "They're just... gone."

Lira walked over and knelt beside him. "You still remember who you are."

Kai forced a small smile. "For now."

Mira picked up one of the cans and held it toward him. "Maybe your brain just needs food." She smiled hopefully. "You'll eat, and suddenly everything will come back."

Kai smiled. "I wish it worked like that."

Mira laughed. "Or maybe we should knock your head against the wall. Another bump might fix the first one."

No one laughed. The room became completely quiet. Mira slowly lowered the can. She looked away. "...Yeah. That wasn't funny." She placed the can back into the paper bag. "I'm sorry."

Kai looked at her and smiled gently. "You don't have to apologize. I know you were trying to help."

Mira nodded. "But it didn't help."

Kai stood and walked toward the broken window. Outside, the ruined city stretched to the horizon. Collapsed buildings leaned against one another. Trees had begun growing through cracked roads. The world had moved on without the people who once lived there.

Kai stared into the distance. "There was something I used to do every morning."

Lira looked at him. "What was it?"

Kai closed his eyes. "I don't know. I can feel that it mattered. But I can't remember what it was." He opened his eyes again. "I know I've lost something. I just don't know what it is anymore."

Lira stepped beside him. She looked out at the city. "If we can't find those memories, then we'll make new ones."

Kai looked at her. A small smile appeared on his face. "Thank you."

Before Lira could answer, Kai suddenly froze. A cold whisper echoed inside his mind. "We are becoming you."

His smile vanished. His eyes widened. "Who said that?"

Lira frowned. "What did you hear?"

Kai looked from Lira to Mira. "You didn't hear it?"

Both of them slowly shook their heads. Only Kai had heard the voice.

His breathing became uneven. Another whisper followed. This time, it sounded like three voices speaking together. "Soon... there will be no difference between us."

Kai stumbled backward. A familiar blue screen flashed before his eyes.

[Emergency Status Update]

Host Stability: 66%

Identity Drift: Critical Increase Detected

Echo Synchronization: Unstable

Warning

Three active Echoes are beginning to overlap.

Host personality integrity is declining.

Immediate stabilization is strongly recommended.

The screen disappeared. Kai slowly lowered his hand from his forehead. He did not tell Lira or Mira what the System had said. Instead, he quietly looked toward the ruined skyline.

For the first time, he wasn't afraid of the Veil. He wasn't afraid of the Hunters. He was afraid that one day he would wake up and Kai would no longer exist.
