I felt like every ounce of energy had been drained from my body.
After hours of casting spells, tracing ancient runes, and whispering every incantation I could recall, the portal to the human world remained stubbornly sealed. My hands trembled from the effort, my voice hoarse from repetition. Still… nothing.
The sun had long dipped behind the forest's edge when I finally gave up. I didn't bother joining my grandmother for dinner—I had no appetite, not when frustration sat like a stone in my chest. I closed myself off in my room, grateful she didn't come knocking. She always knew when to give me space, and tonight, I needed it more than ever.
I stared blankly at the flickering candle beside my window, its flame dancing like it held secrets I couldn't unlock.
I had done everything I could.
And still, it wasn't enough.
