One of the Anbu members spoke, "Nohara Rin, right? You are now charged with breaking and entering to commit theft. Come with us."
Rin's mind went blank, as if it had exploded into chaos.
Was she about to be imprisoned for theft?
In a daze, she was taken by the Anbu to the interrogation room.
Upon realizing where she was, Rin felt an overwhelming urge to cry.
Yet, no one came to interrogate her.
After sitting in restless anxiety for a long time, the door finally opened, and a familiar figure walked in.
"Kakashi!" Rin's face lit up with joy, as if she'd seen her savior.
Kakashi gestured for the others to leave and sat down across from her with a sigh. "Are you out of your mind? What were you thinking, stealing from the hospital?"
"You're lucky today's patrol knew you were my friend. Otherwise, you'd be in serious trouble."
"I..." Rin stammered, unable to come up with an explanation. "I had my reasons... I just didn't expect the Anbu to be there."
Kakashi said, "The Solitary Tower monitors large parts of the village. Naturally, the Anbu would come looking for you when your theft was detected."
"..."
Kakashi continued, "Why did you do it?"
Rin pursed her lips. "The reason... I can't tell you right now."
Kakashi crossed his arms and looked at her. "You work at the hospital, right? If you needed medicine, you could have just filed a request. Was the medicine you stole that special?"
Rin quickly said, "No, it's just ordinary medicine for colds and fevers."
Kakashi wasn't convinced, He gave her a skeptical look. "The hospital's already been asked to identify the medicine. We'll know what it is soon enough."
Rin's heart sank even further. "Kakashi, can't you help me? Those people listen to you, right? Just let me go and pretend nothing happened, okay?"
Kakashi sighed. "But first, you have to tell me what this is all about. If it's something that threatens the village, would you still want me to help you?"
Rin protested, "It's not that serious!"
Kakashi said, "Stealing from the hospital is already a threat to the village's interests."
Then he asked again, "So? What's the medicine for, who's it for, and what's your purpose?"
Rin turned her head away. "Are you interrogating me?"
Kakashi replied calmly, "What else would you call this?"
"You're so heartless!"
"You won't tell me anything, so don't blame me."
Rin grew more anxious and softened her tone. "Kakashi, this is really important. Please help me, just this once, I'm begging you."
But Kakashi wasn't swayed. He said coolly, "The fact that you're refusing to tell me what's going on means you're afraid I'll stop you if I find out."
Rin was speechless. "I..."
Kakashi continued, "Since you're so sure I would stop you, this definitely isn't a good thing. Stopping you now is actually helping you."
Rin was out of options and could only keep pleading with Kakashi. "Kakashi, I really can't tell you about this, but it's not something bad. It's just... it concerns a girl's reputation, so I can't say."
This did cause Kakashi to waver a bit, and he sat there, deep in thought.
Rin continued to persuade him, "Kakashi, you know me. What kind of wrongdoing could I possibly do? Please, just help me this once."
Just as Kakashi was about to speak, there was a knock on the interrogation room door.
A ninja walked in and whispered a few words into Kakashi's ear.
After a moment of silence, Kakashi said, "Got it."
He turned to Rin. "Those medicines... they're for abortions, right?"
"..."
Kakashi asked, "It's not for you, is it?"
Rin immediately became flustered and indignant. "Of course not! What nonsense are you thinking?!"
Kakashi breathed a sigh of relief. "That's good. Lord Hokage is here. Why don't you repeat what you just told me to him?"
Rin was instantly dumbfounded. "The Hokage... he... Kakashi, wait—!"
Kakashi stood up and walked out.
At the door, Rin saw him bow respectfully toward someone.
Although Kakashi was young, his status in the village was high.
The only person who could command such respect was obvious.
A familiar figure walked into the room, and the door was closed again.
Rin's heart raced wildly; she didn't dare look directly at the other person.
Several bottles of medicine were placed on the table in front of Rin.
The man across from her got straight to the point.
"Is Kushina pregnant?"
Rin forced a stiff smile. "Why would you suspect Kushina-nee? It's not her. These are for... for my neighbor's dog."
Makoto frowned. "Medicine for dogs and for humans isn't the same, is it? And was it really worth stealing from the hospital for that?"
Rin gritted her teeth. "I stole it. So what? Are you going to lock me up?"
Makoto said calmly, "It doesn't matter if you admit it or not. I'll just take Kushina to the hospital for a checkup tomorrow."
"..."
Rin was at a loss, muttering under her breath, "Scumbag."
"Do you know whose child it is?"
"What if I know? What if I don't?" Rin replied defiantly.
Makoto's face darkened. "Are you planning to kill it?"
Rin, feeling guilty, said, "It's not fully formed yet, so how can that be considered killing?"
Makoto was done arguing.
He stood up and left the interrogation room.
Outside, a ninja was waiting for instructions on how to deal with Rin.
"Lock her up for a week," Makoto ordered.
Rin's heart sank upon hearing this, and then she saw Makoto speaking quietly to Kakashi.
Kakashi walked back in, his expression complicated.
Rin asked, "The Hokage wants to lock me up, right?"
Kakashi was silent for a moment before saying, "Lord Hokage wants me to lock you up... in the cell opposite Minato-sensei. He also told me to explain to Sensei why you're being imprisoned."
Rin froze in shock.
"Lord Hokage said this is your punishment."
