As I lied across the road all I could see was fading picture of legs which were surrounding me, my brains couldn't capture anything else but to count and judge the kind of shoes that my eyes were depicting on the scene and also my brains couldn't remember actually everything that happened, I couldn't feel any pains but I couldn't gather my body to get up, I couldn't feel anything within me, my body was so numb. I tried to talk and tell people that I am fine but I couldn't, the organs on my belly felt like they were coming out each time I opened my mouth to talk.
All I recall is flying above then hitting the ground with a mighty thud, within that moment I felt a shock running through the veins and arteries in my body. I had involved myself in an accident, someone had knocked me with their car, and I didn't know who it was, all I could hear was some quarrels and argument, "why did you run him over!?, didn't you see him,, can't you see this is an institution's gate, student cross roads all the time!?" Those were student who had caught the culprit who knocked me over, they didn't give him any space to explain himself, he tried to explain himself but he couldn't do it, all that he kept shouting was "I am sorry!!" If it were not for the police to arrive at the scene they would have bitten the guy with never mercy. That was when I knew at the verge of death everyone becomes a friend even those who were laughing at me in the hallway were there trying to help.
Two minutes before the accident the principal and Peter were still in the office discussing my issue, "so principal, you said that you gave Levi a Job right," Peter's voice cracked through the walls of the administration block even when I was outside loosing my mind I could still hear him talk, "yes Mr Peter," Madam Catherine answered trying to continue making the conversation so professional as if she had read what was on Peter's dirty mind, Peter continued ignoring the 'Mr' part of the conversation, "okay the truth is that Levi, is the one catering for all of his needs, he is the one paying his rent, he is the one clothing himself, he is the one buying himself food, at least he does everything he even sends money back to take care of his little brother, so I think the money is not enough to do about everything." "Oh I didn't know that." "Somebody hold hiiim!!" "He is going to get himself killed!!" Peter and the principal held their breath for a while after hearing the yelling from the outside, "what is happening out here?" Madam Catherine said getting up from her big chair headed for the big window which was facing the school gates towards the road, as she gazed through the window she saw a lot of people gathered around the school gates. " Oh my goodness!!" Peter exclaimed with fear exhibited in his wide opened eyes as his ears stretched like the antenna of a stinging nettle and the hairs in his body stood like the furs of a fearful cat, "what is it!?" Madam Catherine asked shocked with Peter's reaction,"where did Levi go!?"
The two' wanting each other' adults looked at each other in silence trying to assume places in their minds where I could have gone aside from the road but no other place clicked. The two rushed outside the door, with no hesitation, Peter run fast ahead of the principal who could not keep up with the pace because of her bulky body but had to walk as fast as she could. "It's all my fault!!" All through the way Peter kept blaming himself, his breath was two heavy but he kept on muttering to himself, " it's all my fault I shouldn't have allowed him go out of that office all alone. He ran as fast as he could before what he was thinking in his mind could happen, he thought that if he was not there in the scene that I was going to die.
"Move!! Move!!" Peter yelled trying to push the crowd away from his path, "move please, he is my friend." Peter arrived at the scene and stood beside me looking directly to my body which aimlessly was depriving itself life, tears threw themselves out of his calm red eyes as if they were called in an emergency, "Levi, I am so sorry please stay with me don't close your eyes I am right here with you," he said kneeling beside me trying to keep me awake his voice was breaking due to trying to control himself from wailing his pain and blames out.
I looked at him and tried to tell him that they shouldn't bother calling an ambulance that I was okay, but my tongue grew thicker by each passing minute and my eyes deemed each and every time as if they were low in power. The truth is that I felt okay where I was I felt like where I was, I was very far from my pains, I felt like there was a way out of my predicaments, and that was where I was, if they could let me go I was heading to my happiness.
As I cast my eyes up to the sky a very bright light shown upon my body, I felt that was the way out, as I looked through the light I felt so able, I felt my whole body growing so light and I was being lifted from the ground, "Levi please don't look up the sky look at me please the ambulance is coming right away," Levi said trying to turn my head to look at him, the principal had already arrived and was standing beside me, she had nothing to say, this was a lot for her to process, she felt she was the one to be blamed for she was the one who caused me to go emotional in the office and run outside wildly.
The ambulance arrived, and the medics were preparing me for transportation I couldn't feel anything they were doing to me, my whole body had grown so numb, "who is his family," "I am " Peter replied without a loosing second, raising his one hand and the other trying to erase the tears that kept running down his face, "okay you will go with us to the hospital please," one of the medics said.
It was a long journey to the hospital, Peter tried to keep me awake as possible as he would, but I felt like the other world was awaiting, it was calling me, the only thing that kept me waiting was Peter who reminded me of our years of friendship, he tried to relate the good memories we had and that kept my soul so intact but when I thought of how the world was so cruel I wanted to depart it and leave everything behind.
The hospital, wouldn't treat me if I had not deposited some cash to commence my treatment, they were demanded a total deposit of KSH 20k before they could administer any treatment to me, Peter tried to talk to them in a best way possible that he could think of, but none responded effectively, Peter kept coming to my room looking at me as I lost the little breath that had and he couldn't bare watch me die. He decided to make a scene.
As everyone in the hospital acted like they didn't care, the doctors kept on snobbing on him nurses kept passing by without looking on my side like they didn't care, Peter decided to drag my bed out of the room with me on it, "doctors!!" He shouted standing at the reception hall, everyone kept silent they all looked at him, all the nurses, all the doctors, all the patients turned their heads towards him in surprise, "it seems you want this person to die, come and take him to the mortuary and let him die there, no need to give a suffering soul hope by putting it in a patience ward when you know it will die eventually, I said you people should give me the direction to the mortuary sector let me keep my friend there to die!!!" His voice ran through the room wildly and with agony. The hall remained silent, no movement was heard, the doctors bent their heads down and some shook them with embarrassment.
"Quickly, let's take the patient to the ward and start checking on him ASAP," one of the doctors broke the silent as he called at his fellow colleagues who didn't know how to start telling Peter they were sorry and were ready to treat his friend, the doctors themselves pushed my body back to the ward and started checking on me without wasting a minute, Peter looked at them as they wore their gears and truly there was hope for me stay alive.
It was then that Peter decided to call my mother and break the news to her."Hello....." "Hello, ma my name is Peter and I am Levi's friend," Peter said hesitating,he didn't know how to break the news to my mother, "yes Peter I am Levi's mother," my mother said quietly, Peter remained silent for a while, that silence which was unbearable already sent an impulse to my mother's gut, she knew everything was not right, "what happened to Mathayo!?"
