Chapter 23 - Divine selection.

After a while, Jayhan met up with the girls and the new addition to the team, Adonis Moonless.

As Jayhan approached, he could already see the young man staring him down with his black hat almost covering half his face.

'So, this is Adonis? He looks exactly like he did in the game. And probably just as annoying.'

Jayhan halted.

"I knew you could do it," he said, his eyes focused on Kara.

With her arms folded, Kara replied, "Looks like you did the same, too."

Jayhan couldn't help but throw a nervous glance the other way.

It was best not to interact with her, especially when she got like this.

Now turning his attention toward Adonis—

"Are you the leader here?" Adonis asked.

Jayhan replied, "And if I am?"

There was silence for a while, as if time had stopped itself.

Kara and Seo both wore the same expression, yet their thoughts were entirely different.

Veronica, on the other hand, was finding it hard to understand what was happening.

Scoffing, Adonis pointed at Jayhan.

"You don't look strong, not in the very least. If I am to follow anyone, they have to be stronger than I am and not carry around two beautiful girls to do their dirty business."

Jayhan sighed.

In all honesty, he was already expecting something like this to happen. In the game, not only did Seo Yuna try to abandon him on multiple occasions despite knowing he had a crush on her, but there were also times when she would try to sell him off to others, just to be rid of him.

And the only reason for that was simple—the character himself was suffering from main character syndrome.

Not many people could have a decent conversation with people like that.

Despite that, Jayhan still chose to add him to the group.

"The name is Jayhan Grimblade." He stretched his hand forward for a shake.

Adonis found it weird.

He at least expected Jayhan to defend himself in some way.

Is this to say he wasn't worth the trouble?!

[The character Adonis is insulted by your action.]

Jayhan completely ignored the system.

Obviously, Adonis was looking for a reason to fight. If he could somehow beat Jayhan in front of the girls, he could prove to them he was better.

Jayhan knew that was just a waste of time.

At this current time, Jayhan would be one of the few people who had done any type of upgrade to their stats.

Due to the previous quests, no one had really had the time to go searching for the green zone. And even if they did, Adonis was definitely not one of them.

In a fight, Jayhan would 100% win.

But if Adonis was going to be of any use to him, making him feel like a loser, which the situation would put out was not the smart thing to do.

Eventually, Adonis shook his hand, though he only did so not to look bad in front of the girls.

Since Jayhan didn't take him up on his offer, any more escalation would make him look like the bad guy.

"You will not get away with this," he whispered to Jayhan.

'For the love of God…'

Just then—

(2800/2800 people are now present in the plaza.)

Everyone looked to the sky, all carrying different kinds of expressions and emotions.

(All 560 groups within Region 234 have been registered.)

(Rewards will now be distributed.)

Almost instantly, the glowing screen from the system began to appear in front of every single person in the plaza.

Jayhan glared.

Suddenly, Veronica uttered from the back—

"J bear, what does this mean? The system thingy is telling me to pick an option." She pointed at the screen while looking at Jayhan.

The rest got the same thing, the system asking them to pick one of the two options it displayed before them.

For some reason, they all had their eyes on Jayhan, waiting to hear what his answer to Veronica's question would be.

Of course, Jayhan was already aware of this, his entire plan since the beginning of the third scenario.

"Give me a sec, no one should pick anything yet."

He focused his gaze on his own screen.

[DIVINE SELECTION.]

[- Select a single Divine protector. Divine Selectors cannot be changed once chosen. Do well to choose wisely.

-The young Maiden of the West.

-The forgotten death god.]

'Just like in the game, the divine protectors we are to choose from are not fully revealed. Neither their rank nor the type of god are known.'

Jayhan placed his hand on his waist.

There were a few things he remembered from the game that would help him make the right choice when selecting a divine protector.

The selection itself played a huge part in the story as a whole.

Picking the right protector would determine how strong you could get throughout the upcoming quest.

With the exception of Kara Liam, in order to get a powerful unique ability and a divine protection, you need influential and capable protectors.

Not many people knew it until further in the story, but the only reason Divine protectors were participating in this hell game to begin with was so they could return to the land of the living.

The more powerful their contractee turned out, the closer they got to reincarnating back into the world.

It wouldn't be a stretch to say the whole reason the taskmaster was doing all this was to bring the gods back.

All in all, just like in the game, most people chose their divine protectors without thinking.

Jayhan had already studied everything beforehand, so he wasn't too worried.

'The forgotten death god.'

These names, although they seemed like the real names of these divine protectors, were actually false names, a way for the Divine protectors to hide their identity.

Since there was a chance of people rejecting them from the options, their egos didn't allow it.

This particular god in question, as the name suggested, was a Divine protector who was forgotten by many, even her own people.

Jayhan knew who this was; he had played way too many games not to know.

'It would seem I was lucky enough to get you, Fallen god of the underworld, Ereshkigal.'
